Universal Studios: New Simpson's Attraction

The Most Miserly Mom was disappointed when Universal Studios removed the "Back to the Future" attraction - it was an oldie but a goodie.

But I am pleased to report that "The Simpson's Attraction" will be arriving at Universal Studios by next Spring. Your family can not only enjoy a super simulator ride which is sure to entertain, you can also roam Universal's avenues with the Simpson's characters themselves!

This attraction is sure to please - The Most Miserly Mom is excited!

Miceage as Watchdog

If Disney World reads MiceAge, they give no official indication. Every so often, though, there are hints of it.

After months of watching the paint on TTC crack, peel, and look ugly, I spoke up about it online and had pictures. A few weeks later, it was repainted.

After months of watching bird poop accumulate on benches in Frontierland, at the waterfront walkway, I said nothing, and watched as the benches were sometimes cleaned nightly, sometimes not. Finally I commented online about the wax and wane of the problem. That was done twice, six weeks and four weeks ago, without seeing the benches much in person in between. Recently I made my way back to this part of the park, and saw that the walkway now sports no benches at all.

Perhaps they were simply missing that day and will be back. Or, perhaps someone with the power to decide came to the same conclusion I did, that the benches were problematic, and simply needed to go. In either of the above, MiceAge was not a factor. But I do wonder.

Haunted Mansion "ring" returns

For years, an old queue pole broken off in the cement at the exit walkway to the HM has prompted people to think there's a diamond ring embedded in the ground (folks have invented a backstory about throwing this ring out the window above). It's not true, of course.

In 2006, this ring was cemented over and the area made smooth. A return trip last week showed me a surprise: the cement covering has itself been scraped away, and the "ring" is again visible. I wonder if there's a backstory to this, such as workers at the mansion uncovering what they perceived as a maintenance mistake?

Contemporary North Wing now fully flat

The old north wing of the Contemporary annex building, only a couple stories tall, has been under demolition for some time to make room for the still-unannounced DVC tower (really more a horseshoe than anything else) going in here. The area is now completely flat, and all traces of the former building are gone. The zone has a surprisingly small footprint.

I'm withholding judgment on this one. I've seen the concept art, yes, and my first reaction is to recoil, but I'm still waiting to see what it really looks like.

Stitch attraction - the ending is different?

Is it my memory, or did the cartoon Stitch once crawl around Tomorrowland (specifically, the Astro-Orbiter) at the end of the filmed part of the ride? He now crawls around the castle, but not TL. Was this changed at some point? Maybe when they went to make the ride even more kid-friendly?

FWIW, my four year old has been tall enough for this ride for 13 months, but we've held him off it until now. He was brave and didn't clench up during the dark scenes, but came out not really liking the ride. They should raise the height limit, and shorten the dark scenes. Advice that also works for DAK's Dinosaur, but that's another story.

Wire free on Nemo

Saw a show last week of the Nemo Musical which had no wire work at all. Apparently, this wasn't due to the system breaking down, but a lack of appropriately trained safety personnel. So they did a show without any flying. It was bizarre to see, and surprisingly boring. The performers were good, as always, but apparently a lot of the show's dynamism depends on the action of this one scene.

Intriguinig to think that at one point early on, the designers wanted to make the WHOLE show on wires. That would have been a sight to see.

The futurism of Epcot, now in Downtown Orlando

While at the Orlando Science Center this weekend, I saw a display on inventors of 2006, with little biographies and explanations of the science. Apparently, this was funded by the History Channel, for they'd done this very content as a show. It got me thinking: this kind of hopeful optimism and futurism used to be EXACTLY what Future World was all about. Now, the closest you come is Innoventions, which is just plain sad by comparison. That's what comes of corporate sponsorships. Why not some more inventive alliances, like this very display done by the History Channel? It would fit the theme of Epcot so very much better.

Kennedy Space Center

Kennedy Space Center is introducing a new ride which you are able to experience the exhilaration of a space shuttle launch. The new ride is expected to have a soft opening in early May. It can accommodate as many as 1,400 people an hour. The ride simulates a launch, replete with vibrations and jolts.Once in space, riders get a view of Earth. For more details

New TV monitors in Backlot Tram Tour

Not sure how many weeks (months?) they've been there, but the prop warehouse of the tram tour now sports monitors looping a series of quick trailers and videos. I've got to wonder about that. Don't people basically blaze through this building anyway?

Of course, I'd rather they let people opt to skip the Harbor Attack scene and go straight to the warehouse. Then I'd be more inclined to ride this thing more often than I do now. And in such a case, you might actually have a line in the prop warehouse, prompting a need for monitors. I can only hope!

Disney World & Orlando Hotel Special Rates!

The Most Miserly Mom knows how confusing it can be choosing a hotel for your Disney World vacation. You may ask yourself if you should stay right on property at Disney World? Or should you stay on International Drive in the midst of all the touristy stuff Orlando has to offer?

The key to the answer is money. If you stay on property at a Disney Resort you do pay much more than staying off property on International Drive or in Kissimmee. Sometimes Disney has rates as low as $59 - and I do tell you how to get those rates in my book, but normally the rates are higher than that - over $100 per night.

It is true that if you stay at a Disney Resort you may think you don't need a car. Well, you don't if all you want to see is Disney and all you want to eat is Disney food at Disney prices.

Think about it long and hard before you decide. Staying at a Disney Resort can be wonderful, but if you want to visit Orlando, Universal Studios, Sea World, and all the other fun stuff Orlando has to offer do not stay at a Disney Resort. Save yourself the cash and stay on I-Drive or in Kissimmee where you can get hotels as low as $30 a night!

Like Magical Express, but for I-Drive

Beth Kassab is reporting that Lynx, the public bus company, will soon operate a shuttle from the airport directly to I-drive. This is like the Disney's Magical Express, a way to bypass limos, taxis, and expensive shuttle services. If you ask me, it's high time. Orlando taxi operators were making a lot of money in the years before DME and now this, and there needed to be alternatives.

Ready to purchase a vacation home contact Greg Volan at Encantada Resort

My name is Greg Volan, and I work with Park Square Homes at Encantada Resort in Orlando! I have been in the Real Estate Business in Orlando since 1993, and have worked in all areas of the business, but enjoy working for the builders and developer’s best, and Park Square homes are the Best in town! I have seen the industry go through allot of changes especially in the last 3 years, but the business has always been rewarding to me whether it is helping a young couple starting out, and getting into there first home, or helping families realize there dreams of owning a piece of the sunshine. Lots of families purchase in Florida to give them a break from the weather or the stresses of life back home, or to come see the Mouse House (Disney), & all the other reasons folks love to come to Central Florida! I can relate because the first 19 years of my life I grew up in Freezing Cold Cleveland Ohio, and we always looked forward to coming to Orlando each, and every year! The funny part is we would always come in the summer when my sister and I were out of school, and the one time we came in the winter was about two years before the whole family moved down. I still remember that trip because we were sitting in the sun, and my Dad looked at my Mom and said “we will live here someday”! So here we all are, now with Aunts, Uncles, and the rest of our family! It did take a little while to adjust because it is a different place, but once you get to experience all of what it has to offer, I would not want to be anywhere else!
So If I can help anyone experience what I am blessed enough to have on a daily bases, it would be my pleasure to serve! Once again I work at the Beautiful Encantada Resort, which offers 3, and 4 bedroom townhouse with private splash pools off the back of each one! Also a 9000sf. Clubhouse with tons of amenities, and a location second to none--- definitely worth checking out! You can live here at Encantada year round or, have our onsite management company rent out your unit while your back home to help recapture some of your expenses! Feel free to contact me with any questions.

Thanks, Greg

New SeaWorld Web Site to Feature Photographs and Reflections

SeaWorld is launching a new Web site and it needs your help. The Orlando, Fla., San Diego, Calif., and San Antonio, Texas marine life adventure parks have issued a call for photographs and reflections from park visitors that will form the backbone of the parks’ new Web site.

According to Joseph A. Couceiro, Corporate Marketing Vice-President for SeaWorld’s parent company, Busch Entertainment Corp., the strategy is intended to create a true interactive online experience for fans of SeaWorld and to engage them before and after their visit.

“By our reckoning something approaching a billion photographs have been taken by SeaWorld guests,” he said, noting that the estimate excludes the thousands of cameras and SeaWorld photographs ruined in the infamous ‘Splash Zone’ at Shamu Stadium. “The history of these parks is in shoeboxes across America and around the world. There are remarkable photos of families enjoying SeaWorld in those boxes and we want them.”*

The program is part of a strategy to draw SeaWorld fans into the Web site and give them an ownership stake in it. The first phase calls for the use of guest photographs of SeaWorld only, but Web designers are considering including written reflections of SeaWorld visits as well as digital video and audio files.

Designers encourage SeaWorld visitors to dig deeper than just the traditional photos of Shamu.

“We’re looking for photographs of every aspect of the SeaWorld experience, from shopping and dining to shows and rides. If you have a shot of your family enjoying a SeaWorld garden or taking a break in the shade of a tree, we want to see it,” said Dean Sullivan, Director of Lifestyle Marketing and Emerging Media for Busch Entertainment. “We’re trying to convey the kinds of real experiences our guests have every day in the SeaWorld parks. We also hope this provides the opportunity for families to reconnect and reminisce about a visit that may have happened years ago.”

Sullivan is quick to remind prospective photo donors that SeaWorld prohibits cameras on its rides. “I’m sure our guests will be eager to try to capture their experiences in novel ways, but we can’t allow cameras on most of our rides.”

The first SeaWorld park opened its gates 43 years ago today on the shores of San Diego’s Mission Bay. SeaWorld Orlando was completed in 1973 and SeaWorld San Antonio opened in 1988. Since then an estimated 320 million guests have visited a SeaWorld park.

For a limited time, every family who submits a photograph that is chosen for use on the new site will receive complimentary admission for four to the SeaWorld park of their choice. More information on the program, including technical requirements, file size limits and creative restrictions, can be found at http://www.seaworld.com/.

In addition to SeaWorld, BEC operates Busch Gardens parks in Tampa, Fla. and Williamsburg, Va.; Discovery Cove in Orlando; Sesame Place in Langhorne, Pa. near Philadelphia; Adventure Island in Tampa; Water Country USA in Williamsburg. Aquatica, SeaWorld’s water park, is under construction in Orlando and is scheduled to open next spring.
* Non-digital photographs should be scanned. We will not accept traditional chemistry paper photographs. Sea World Vacations

Universal Studios Travel Tip

The Most Miserly Mom loves Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure - not only for the awesome ticket prices (see previous blogs or purchase my book for info) - but for the fabulous rides and experiences.

Most recently I challenged myself to the "Dueling Dragons" roller coaster with drops and twists and turns and speed that brought me back to my youth (no kidding!)

But The Most Miserly Mom wants you to know that at Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure, you cannot have any bags or purses of any kind when you experience their coasters and thrill rides. Universal provides lockers, and you must put your things in a locker before you are allowed to enter the line for the attraction.

So, Miserly Tip of the Day: Either be prepared in advance for lockers - or just have a fanny pack so you needn't use a locker and waste time!

Disney's Animal Kingdom & Expedition Everest

The Most Miserly Mom read today that attendance at Disney's Animal Kingdom rose over 8% this past year.

The reason attendance was up - was due in part to the fabulous attraction "Expedition Everest."

This attraction one the best attraction of the year award this past year as well, and The Most Miserly Mom definitely recommends it to you when you visit Animal Kingdom.

Disney's roller coasters, for those of you who don't know, aren't incredibly wild and risky - no big loops and huge drops. Instead, Disney provides a coaster that thrills you and entertains you at the same time. And Expedition Everest does just that.

You will actually encounter the abominable snowman on this coaster!

Reedy Creek and the paramedics

I found out this weekend how strong the presence of Reedy Creek Improvement District's (RCID) emergency personnel at the Disney parks is. Seems they keep one team at DAK and one team at MGM all the time. And they keep two teams at Epcot and MK at all times. While they are themselves EMTs and paramedics, they don't keep ambulances around. They'd call for a real ambulance if they need one. But they do have a cart they can push out into the park. Not a "crash cart" (to revive a dying person) but something to maintain minimal life support, akin to some of the tools around on the ambulance itself.

More fruit at ODF

Outdoor Foods (ODF) carts at Epcot are sporting some pieces of fruit now - I'm thinking of the one outside Electric Umbrella. It's a good trend. More healthy options!

Cheap Orlando/Disney Hotels: Fairfield Inn!

The Most Miserly Mom writes about a lot of different hotels in my book, however in Orlando and Disney World I know families are always looking for different options.
I have motels listed in my book for as low as $39 a night (sometimes less!)

Well, the Fairfield Inn by Marriott at Lake Buena Vista isn't the cheapest motel/hotel by far, but it is a gorgeous property, right in Lake Buena Vista, and has tons of amenities and an awesome package deal:

New street signs at Downtown Disney

Noticed a small thing this weekend: the street signs at Downtown Disney, where Buena Vista Dr intersects, aren't there anymore. Now there are boxes that display digital text in their place, I think via small LEDs. At the moment, there merely displayed "TEST TEST" on them, but I assume this gives Disney some flexibility on what to put there, rather than street names. Like if a band is playing that night, maybe they could put it right there on the street sign. Or say House of Blues and place an arrow there. Neat.

Cheap Disney World Tickets

The Most Miserly Mom knows that everyone wants cheap tickets to Disney World!

My book actually gives you specific places that you can go to to get free and severely discounted Disney World theme park tickets.

If you choose not to go that route, then Magic Your Way tickets offer the best value for the entire family visiting Disney Parks. You can pick and choose which parks you would like to visit on which days. If you use AAA discounts, Military discounts, Senior citizen discounts, or the time share discounts we discuss, or the Magic your way options, you are bound to find a way to fit Disney into your budget. Disney’s web site offers you a way to calculate your actual ticket prices using the Magic Your Way options. Go to this page: http://disneyworld.disney.go.com/wdw/tickets/ticketsLandingPage?id=TicketsLandingPage and you can figure our the exact cost.
