They’re here…in what has become one of Orlando’s biggest annual events, Universal Orlando’s Halloween Horror Nights returns on September 26. Amusement Today magazine calls Universal Orlando’s Halloween Horror Nights, “The country’s best Halloween event,” while guests might just call it pretty darn scary. Admission for Universal Orlando’s Halloween Horror Nights is separate from the Universal theme park admission, although the event is included in the 2-Park Premier Annual Pass for Florida residents.
After Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure closes down for the day, a host of creepy urban legends come alive as the sun goes down. This year’s ghoul of honor is Bloody Mary, who can be seen on just about every other billboard on Interstate 4 and the 528 Beachline Expressways in Orlando. In addition to haunted houses and roaming monsters, the live shows for the 2008 Universal Orlando’s Halloween Horror Nights include a Rocky Horror Picture Show tribute, Bill & Ted’s Excellent Halloween Adventure, and a magic show by Brian Brushwood.
The dates for the 2008 Universal Orlando’s Halloween Horror Nights are as follows:
· September 26-27
· October 2-5, 9-12, 16-19, 22-26, 29-31
· November 1, 2008

Sarah Palin at Epcot (not really)
Palin Brushing Up On Foreign Policy At Epcot
ORLANDO, FL—Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin sought to silence those who have criticized her lack of foreign affairs experience Tuesday by announcing plans for a weeklong, 10-nation tour of Walt Disney World's Epcot. More here:

I post this not to comment politically, but to express amazement that the Onion knows so much about Epcot. They even got the name right for Morocco's Tangierine Cafe!

Car Hire Advice; How To Get The Best From Your Driving Holiday
Firstly if you are part of a frequent fliers plan with a specific air travel company there may be the option of preferential rates. Many companies offer their customers unique discounts on car hire for those who use the service regularly. Before you travel it is definitely worth enquiring if you can apply for these discounted prices.
The internet is a wonderful resource and in the world of car hire this is no different. Most companies, especially the larger companies have websites that offer online booking solutions. These online booking options are often cheaper than phone booking, sometimes as much as ten percent of the price.
Before you hire you should always get a clear idea of what the hire contract contains. Firstly you should get a full understanding of what the insurance covers, checking liability clauses to see if you will be held responsible for any damage to the car is also essential. An added concern you be whether you are the only driver able to drive the hire car, if you want somebody else in your party to be able to drive there is often an applicable surcharge.
At the time of booking you should always ask for a conformation number as this ensures you have fulfilled your booking obligations. Keep this number with you when you travel to ensure your reservation is upheld. If travelling by air it is also worth giving the rental company your flight number and arrival time; by doing this, if your flight does happen to be delayed your reservation should be kept open for you until you land.
Car upgrades may always seem the best option when at the car hire desk, especially when offered at no extra cost. Be careful though, larger cars are often less fuel efficient and subsequently your fuel prices will be higher. If you are worried by the high prices of fuel or even the environmental concerns of driving a larger car, insist that your hire car is smaller and more economical.
If the car had a full tank of fuel when you started your hire period, ensure that it is returned to the rental company in the same way. The fuel excesses charged by companies for filling cars can add a nasty surprise to your bill on returning the car. It is usually cheaper to refill the car yourself rather than rely upon the company's refuelling service.
Before you leave the lot of cars make a detailed check of the condition of the vehicle. Looking for signs of damage and the mileage information is essential. Let the agent know of your findings to ensure they are fully aware of the state of the car before you left, by doing this any queries over the condition of the car when you return can be negated.
Most of us would not even think of drinking at driving, but this is especially important when using a hire car. Most contracts will be declared null and void if you are found to be over the limit. The insurance policy you have with the rental company will be most likely voided if you happen to have an accident under the influence of drink or drugs.
Enquire about the specific time when the car must be returned, many car hire companies will charge heavy penalties for late returns. Charges are usually worked out on a twenty four hour basis so even if you return the car just an hour late, it can be considered the start of another twenty four hour period and hence another full day's charges.
Following this advice should lead to a pleasant car hire experience; ensuring your liability is clearly defined and the rental company are fully aware of any defects with the car is fundamental. Other than that, just remember to take a map of the area to ensure you do not get lost.
Travel expert Thomas Pretty looks into ways to make your car hire experience more enjoyable and to ensure your contractual responsibilities are fulfilled.

Winter Garden Trail
The West Orange trail- when completed, will be a 36 mile, multi-purpose recreational gateway containing a 14 foot wide paved surface to be enjoyed by walkers, joggers, hikers, bikers, skaters and the physically challenged. The first segment of the Trail is complete from Killarney Station to Welch Road in Apopka. The Trail will eventually continue north of Apopka (Phase 4) to Kelley Park. Phase 5 will link the Trail to Lake County (from Orange County Parks & Recreation brochure or http://www.orangecountyparks.net/)
This blogger took his family for a nice bike ride from Winter Garden to Oakland Park. It was a delight to see how Winter Garden has been able to preserve the small town feeling and exploit the trail to attract development. There are some very nice neighborhoods already there and others under development in the area. There is a strong police presence as the headquarters of the Winter Garden Police is along the path of the Trail. Generally people who frequent this Trail, devoted cyclists or beginners, are considerate of each other. there are two bike shops on this section of the trail for small repairs, refreshments, etc. The also have good quality bikes for rent including attachments for little ones to young to ride alone. There are also two bike shops in downtown Winter garden (one of which is opening soon).
This blogger and his beautiful wife returned the next morning at 8:30 am and found parking tight, but the ride was enjoyable as temperatures were just right. All in all we covered just ten miles this morning and plan to make visiting the Trail a regular family event.
I regret having skimped on Karla's bike bought at the notorious retail discounter we all love as I foresee spending a few dollars upgrading it. The trail is easy so high end, multi-gear jobs are unnecessary; but the lighter the bikes, the more dollars you'll spend.

Environmental And Security Strategies Being Pursued In The Car Hire Industry
In terms of technology and technological development the car hire industry has always had a somewhat poor reputation. In the wider sense it has often been regarded as an industry that is less than receptive of change, an industry that would prefer to carry on car hire operations as they have been carried out for generations. One thing has certainly changed in the car hire industry in the last twenty years however, as increased competition has become readily apparent, a unique customer focus has had to have been developed by all the major players to ensure their survival.
Like many industries the car hire industry has had to cope with increasing calls by eco-lobbyists to go green. The effects of global warming are increasingly affecting our way of life and in the realm of car hire this is no different. As technologies are developed to reduce the impact that car hire companies are having upon the environment, these technologies are being offered to tweak our environmental conscience. This is in no way an industry-wide phenomenon but there are now enough companies employing eco strategies to regard it as a trend. As more and more customers demand services that are eco-friendly, it is understandable that certain companies are using eco strategies to entice custom and trade.
The most widespread form of eco-strategy has been the introduction of hybrid cars into car hire fleets. While this may look great to customers when purveying the company literature, many environmental commentators have criticised this type of policy as a gesture that only goes half way to tackling the problems of climate change. It is true that hybrid cars produce lower emissions than their regular counterparts but the feasibility of using fuel sources such as bio-fuel and hydrogen has still not been fully researched. A fact that environmental campaigners are acutely aware of; especially when considering bio-fuel, that uses swathes of land that could instead be used for the raising of crops.
There is also the argument that for car hire companies to truly become more eco-friendly it is essential that they work towards changing the way customers use their hire cars. While this may not be in their interests in terms of generated profits, it is still being introduced by some forward thinking companies. One way in which this is being done is by changing the way in which rates and tariffs are calculated. The major shift has been from hire on a daily basis to an hourly structure of charges. It is hoped that by doing this, the number of hire cars on the road at any one time can be reduced and subsequently the negative impact on both the environment and congestion will be lessened.
It is not however purely environmental changes that have been felt in the car hire industry in recent years. After many high profile cases where organised criminals had managed to steal large proportions of fleets, security has become a major concern in the industry. One of the methods that has been employed is the fitting of GPS trackers into many fleet vehicles. Acting like a black box on an aeroplane it is possible for companies to track the whereabouts of all their vehicles at any one time; especially useful after a theft. As well as these GPS devices, an increasingly common sight at car hire desks is a thumb print reader that records all of the customers thumb prints digitally. As with many spheres of life, biometric data is becoming an ever more fundamental part of the car rental process.
While new technologies may be initially resisted by those in the industry, it does not take a great deal of time for their benefits to be realised. The security measures will undoubtedly spread rapidly as they actively work towards protecting fleets. What might take longer is the introduction of eco-strategies; these policies will not bring immediate profits and hence will be resisted. The only way for a greener car hire industry to become apparent is to keep up the demand for eco-friendly options when we are at the rental desk.
Expert Thomas Pretty looks into ways in which the car hire industry is tackling the environmental and security problems it faces.
Getting The Best From Your Car Hire Experience
It is usually advisable to book your hire car at least a week in advance. The general rule is that the earlier you book the more preferable your rate will be. This is not always the case but by making the provisions early you may well receive a better deal. In addition to this, by booking online, many car hire companies will offer cheaper prices. At this stage it is usually worth enquiring about the hire car services' cancellation policy. There is usually a minimum period of notice as well as charges that will be incurred if cancellation does occur.
When choosing a car hire company, make the selection after great deliberation. Comparing a variety of car companies along the lines of price, service and vehicle availability is advisable. Most rates will vary in accordance with the car you eventually decide to hire in terms of its size and class. If you require a specialist vehicle, you may well have to search a number of companies to fulfil your requirements. Service should be a major concern as finding a company that delivers good customer service is often worth using again.
When it comes to the car hire company's insurance extras, it is worth considering the options carefully. There is a huge amount of choice in the policies you can take out to deal with all manner of eventualities. It may not always however be worth taking these policies when hiring your car. Look at your own car insurance policy and whether this will cover you for your trip. If it does not, the car hire company's policies may be the right option.
If you have another traveller who is likely to drive the hire car it is advisable to put these additional drivers on the rental contract. If you do not put these drivers on the contract you risk voiding it and losing any protection you may have had in terms of insurance. A lot of companies will not charge extra for placing a spouse on the contract but you should always check with the company before the contract is signed.
Before you drive away you should always make a thorough check of the car inside and out ensuring that any damage is highlighted to the company. Taking the agent with you and performing the check in their presence is advisable so they can make a note of any dents or scratches that may be apparent.
Making sure you stick to the terms of the car hire agreement is fundamental. If there is any mileage restrictions these should be strictly adhered to. Other infringements such as applying snow chains and towing trailers or caravans should also be put in the contract; undertaking these activities without permission may well lead to a voiding of your contract and hence extra surcharges.
If the unlikely event of an accident, their will be paperwork that will undoubtedly follow. Filling out an accident report with both the police and the car hire company will be required and the majority of the time this has to be done within a specific period after the accident, failure to do so may invalidate the contract. The same applies if your car happens to be stolen or vandalised in any way; a police report is normally a prerequisite.
And finally to ensure you rental car experience is a stress free as possible, make sure to return the car on time. Rates are usually calculated on a 24 hour basis so even returning a car just one hour late can mean large penalties. Charges for extra hours can soon add up to the cost of a full days hire so returning your car on time really is essential. If you follow this advice there is no reason that you rental experience will not be enjoyable. With a little planning, a perfect journey is literally only a drive away.
Travel expert Thomas Pretty gives advice on ways in which consumers can get the best from their car hire experiences.

Taverna Opa on a Friday Night
Kalimera! Hello! Last night the top brass from orlandoescape.com/hotelsescape.comtreated this blogger and his family to fine Greek dining at Pointe Orlando, a shopping, dining, and entertainment complex on International Drive. It was awesome with an exclamation point which means it was ALL RIGHT! The food was excellent, service was cordial and prompt, the belly dancer dancing on the tables with a plate of candles on her head was just over the top fantastic ( and, yes, she was pretty). The beer, Mythos, was a Greek version of Shing-tao which is a Chinese version of Bud-weis-er; i.e. regular beer that tastes great when very cold and when very thirsty. The prices I assume were fine but I wouldn't know since i was a guest of Sunil and irmarie Govind, founders of the phenomenally successful websites listed above and the fast, rising website floridaescape.com.
Hints:
1) Arrive before 7 pm as the restaurant becomes very busy and its first come, first serve
2) Park on the third floor of the parking garage if you are going directly to Taverna Opa; on the first floor if you are goig to visit the shops or hitting the move cinama-plex first
3) The music at the Greek restaturant is very loud; conversation can be strained.
4) The tables are clean in spite of the dancing
5) Don't slip on the napkins on the floor
6) KEEP the PARKING TICKET; Unlike Universal Studios city Walk, you can validate it at participating restaurants in Pointe Orlando (universal Studios: ARE YOU LISTENING?)
For those in the darks, parking at Universal Studios is $11 and they don't validate anything! More Orlando Restaurants

Car Hire Terms And Terminology
The world of car hire can be befuddling for the traveller. With so many terms bandied about by car hire representatives you are often left feeling confused and bemused and in the main, unclear on what you are actually paying for. While the rep may have a clear idea of what they are talking about, it is often the customer who has lost the conversation long ago and ultimately is trying to hang on to any semblance of relevancy in the hiring process. For some help to travellers wishing to hire a car, here are a number of terms used in the industry.
Additional drivers are those added to the hire package when in the process of hiring your car. Understandably, if you are hiring the car for a long period of time and driving large distances it is advisable to share the driving with another member of the party. The car hire company should be notified of this person, adding them to the contract. While there will normally be an additional charge for adding other drivers, it will be ultimately worthwhile as sharing the workload can make the trip that much more enjoyable for everyone.
Airport surcharges are usually added when using car hire from a major airport. While the consumer may be at a loss to explain why a hire car should be any more expensive whether hiring from an airport or not is relatively simple. The hire company will normally have to pay the airport authorities a payment that secures their desk in the terminal. These fees are usually passed directly onto the customer, like it or not, you will probably have to pay more if hiring from an airport.
A collision damage waiver or CDW is a common insurance extra that applies to you if an accident should occur during your hire period. An excess will normally apply, and an added charge will almost certainly be applicable; however, the taking of this waiver can save a lot of expense should you encounter an accident. It should be remembered however that this is not strictly insurance and is only an added extra to your premium.
Personal accident insurance will provide both driver and passengers with protection and coverage from personal injury. This is especially useful when in a foreign country as medical bills for holidaymakers can be exorbitant. Companies will vary on prices for this kind of package so be sure to check over the small print carefully.
A theft protection package can help you should your hire car be broken into or stolen. While this is usually included as part of the hire package, it is worth checking the contract carefully, if it is not their as standard, it may well be worth taking it as an extra.
You may need to cancel your hire car if you have booked early and unforeseen circumstances have arisen. A waiver that ensures you are refunded if this is the case can be advisable rather than losing your entire hire fee.
If you are planning to use a hire car whilst abroad it is often needed to apply for an international driving permit. This does not mean it is valid as a licence however and should only be used as an additional element to your domestic license.
It is hoped this brief glossary has helped the consumer to gain a better understanding of the terminology used within the car hire industry. By decoding some of the phrases bandied around by reps it is possible to get a better deal and a further understanding of what you are paying for. For the traveller, this should be a vital and useful resource.

Finding the Best Deal on a Car Hire
Getting the best deal on a car hire can be difficult, but it is important to get a great deal. A great deal on a vacation car hire can mean the difference between an affordable vacation and one that is way over budget, and in fact the price of the car hire can equal or even exceed that of the hotel and plane tickets.
There are many places to start shopping for the perfect car hire, including the Internet, travel magazines and the yellow pages. There are many car hire agencies out there, and it is important to use that competition to your advantage in order to get the best price.
Many factors will influence the price of the car hire, so it is important to shop around carefully and compare like offers. The age of the driver, for instance, will have a significant impact on the price of the daily car hire, with younger drivers typically required to pay more than older ones.
The type of car will also have quite a big impact on the price of the car hire. In general, larger cars, pickup trucks, minivans and SUVs will cost the most, while compact and subcompact cars will be the least expensive car hires. In some cases, however, the car hire agency may offer perks like a free upgrade, which means you may be able to get a larger car for the price of a smaller one.
When considering a car hire, it is always important to read the fine print. The terms and conditions of the car hire will vary from rental agency to rental agency, so it is important to determine what is covered and what is not. For instance, some car hire companies will allow their drivers to put an unlimited number of miles on the car, while others will tack on a daily surcharge to the car hire for miles over a certain daily limit.
In addition, it is important to determine what kind of car hire insurance you will need. If you pay for your car hire with a major credit card, you may already have car hire insurance. If you are unsure of your coverage, be sure to check with your credit card company. In addition, your car insurance company may already provide car hire insurance, so before taking out additional insurance at the car hire company, be sure to make sure you are not already covered. Doing so can help to reduce the overall cost of your car hire.
