Villa Taranto

Four straight days of rain here in Stresa. Enough to make me think back to an afternoon two weeks ago in Villa Taranto, where I took these photos. Flowers, sunshine, blue skies... that's more like it.

It took a Scottish captain, Neil McEacharn, thirty years to create this stunning property, which he then donated to Italy. It will take you one to two hours to meander its 20 hectares of gardens on the 7 km of paths. And then leave yourself a few minutes more to relax with a glass of wine in the cafe located at the entrance.

Giardini Botanici Villa Taranto, Verbania Pallanza
Open from April 1 to October 31, daily from 8.30 to 19.30
Minutes from Stresa by car, or with boat service to Villa Taranto

Cheap Flights to Orlando

It's no secret that airfare prices have been rising over the past year, but it is still possible to get relatively cheap flights to Orlando. Air fares increase during peak seasons—particularly summer vacation, the holiday season, and spring break—but during off-peak times the prices become more affordable. During these times airlines might advertise lower fares, and for passengers who have frequent flyer miles, the off-peak season is less likely to have blackout dates for reservations.

Southwest Airlines offers cheap flights to Orlando just about any time of the year. Southwest's prices are only listed on their official Web site, www.southwest.com, and are not included on other travel Web sites that list discounted airline ticket prices. Southwest is well known for its affordable air fares, friendly customer service, and open seating for passengers. Frequent flyers who eventually earn enough Rapid Rewards points can earn a free, transferable ticket on Southwest Airlines that can help defray the cost of any trip to Orlando.

Taking a Rental Car into Mexico

Can I cross the US border to Mexico? Want to drive a rental car from US to Nuevo Laredo (Mexico)?
I am an international student from Austin, going to Nuevo Laredo US consulate to extend the F1 visa. I want to rent a car and drive to the consulate. Can I really do that? When I looked into blogs, saw that people go to Laredo (TX) and take cabs. I want to know that whether I can go directly.

I'm not sure what will apply to your situation, so I'll tell you all I know.

If you’re a U.S resident, you may drive a rental car into Mexico with some rental companies. You may only drive a rental vehicle into Mexico if you purchase Mexican Automobile Liability Insurance at the U.S. rental location. This insurance is available only at specific locations in certain states. The three most common are Texas, Arizona and California. It is not available to purchase in Mexico.

Foreign nationals who can’t establish legal permanent U.S. resident status or current valid visa status can’t purchase this insurance because Mexico law prohibits such persons from driving a U.S. car in Mexico, making them subject to arrest and the car subject to seizure.

You must purchase this extra insurance regardless of any insurance coverages you may already have or already purchased from the rental agency.

Most companies that allow travel into Mexico. will only only travel within a certain area; check with the car rental company you want to rent from to check restrictions.

There are vehicle type and size restrictions as well. Most companies will not allow you to take a rental minivan, SUV or speciality vehicle into Mexico. These vehicles have a super high theft risk. Make sure to check with the location you rent from for details on these restrictions.

T-Rex A Prehistoric Family Adventure Opens at Downtown Disney

Newly opened at Downtown Disney: T-Rex: A Prehistoric Family Adventure. Disney’s signature nighttime hotspot is undergoing a lot of changes these days. Last month Pleasure Island shut down permanently to make way for more family-friendly attractions, and the T-Rex restaurant appears to be a sign of things to come.

The T-Rex restaurant has seating for more than 620, a couple of dozen life-size robotic dinosaurs and real fossils encased in the bathroom walls. It was created by the same creative team that brought the popular Rainforest Café to Downtown Disney, which is as much of an experience as it is a restaurant.

Since families are going to be the main target audience, kids will be able to do a little fossil digging of their own at T-Rex. Other features include a Shark Bar (for grown-ups, obviously) with its glowing glass bar, a 5,000-gallon shark tank and giant, robotic octopus; a life-size, robotic, tyrannosaurus rex; and themed dining areas such as the Geo-Tech Room and an Ice Cave.

Do you need to show proof for a car rental discount?

Do rental car companies check ID when using corporate discounts?
I see that there are a lot of postings online with Corporate discount codes for booking online with rental car companies. When using a corporate discount code, do they make you show proof that you qualify? I found a corporate ID code to use at Dollar, but I'm afraid at the time of rental they won't give me the discount without some sort of corporate ID. Has anyone else used these discount codes without any trouble?

A corporate discount code is a code that is provided to a company for use by its' employees. If asked, you have to show proof at the car rental company that you work for that company. Proof could be an employee badge or pay stub.

You may be better off using a discount that you actually qualify for. There are lots of membership programs and professional associations that offer discounts with one or more car rental companies. You can find a list of discount codes by clicking on the Car Rental Discount Codes Link on the right of this page under Car Rental Tips Index.

Remember, if asked, you will have to show proof of membership for your association discount as well, such as a membership card.

Toy Story Mania - the technical details

http://www.controleng.com/article/CA6593192.html

Automation and Ethernet Combine for 3D Disney Attraction
Toy Story Midway Mania debuts Disney's extensive use of automation and controls over Ethernet.

snippet:

“Every screen in the attraction has a Hewlett-Packard game computer that receives data from the wayside computer,” Gerstner says. “At that point, mathematics takes over. An algorithm takes all encoder values and calculates a position on the screen where the projectile should emanate from the gun that the guest is pointing and firing. It even calculates for the arc of the gun. A computer-generated image is then created and sent via fiber link to the projector and to the 3D active polarizer to produce the image and project it on the screen.”

An image for the left eye and the right eye is produced by the game computers. Screen polarization synchronizes images sent from the computers so that a 3D image is rendered and perceived by the guest in 3D thanks to the special glasses we’re all familiar with from viewing 3D movies.

Ti piace cappuccino?

Ti piace il cappuccino? Do you like cappuccino? If so, there’s a fun and informative thread right now in the forum on my favorite travel site, Slowtrav.com. It discusses just what it is that makes the cappuccino in Italy better than anywhere else, why it’s so difficult to recreate that cup of cappuccino at home, and tons of tips for getting as close to it as you can. If you’re into cappuccino it’s fun reading and obsessively detailed, right down to the temperature of the milk used for frothing and the frothing wand position. I’ll admit right now that I’ve never even attempted to make a cappuccino at home. For me its all about going to the cappuccino bars, hearing the banging and whirring, watching the people coming and going, listening to the regulars catching up with each other. Cappuccino in the morning and espresso later on; I love the flow and pace of it. Here are a few of my favorite cappuccino bars in Stresa:

Patty Bar: Nothing fancy, but this is a real neighborhood bar with great cappuccino. Carla, the owner, knows to always put lots of cocoa on mine without my asking for it, and she’s also willing to practice Italian with me in slow moments.

Jolly Bar: Officially Pasticceria Jolly Bar, this is bigger and fancier, with more seating and wonderful store-made sweets. This is a great spot to try the local pastries and sit a bit longer.

L’Idrovolante: L’Idrovolante is more than just a cappuccino bar, it’s a full restaurant as well, but I like having cappuccino there for its location. Right on the water, I stop here while walking along the Lungolago, the path along the lake, or before or after taking the boat from the Carciano imbarcadero next door.

Patty Bar: Via Principe Tomaso at Piazza Pozzi, Stresa
Pasticceria Jolly Bar: Via Principe Tomaso, 17, Stresa

L'idrovolante: Piazziale Lido, 6, Stresa

Walt Disney World: Disney Boardwalk

Among the many attributes of Walt Disney World is the resort’s uncanny ability to transform what used to be Central Florida marshland into a completely different place and moment in time. Walt Disney World’s Boardwalk recalls the traditional boardwalks on the Eastern seaboard, with all of the glitz and none of the grime.

The Disney Boardwalk links together four Walt Disney World resorts: The Dolphin, Swan, Beach Club and Yacht Club, which are all considered Epcot area resorts. Staying in any one of these resorts (or booking a reservation through 407-WDW-DINE in one of the resort’s restaurants, like the Cape May Café at the Beach Club or Shula’s Steakhouse at the Dolphin) will grant your access to Disney’s Boardwalk, which twinkles with lights in the evening as guests stroll past shops, pubs, and nightclubs and live entertainment along a peaceful waterfront.

Credit Card Deposits for Car Rental in France

could someone tell me the credit card policy with car rentals in france. My friend said you have to give them a credit card which they charge with £1000 then when you return the car they refund it to your card. Another friend said they just take the details off it? I dont have a card with £1000 credit so am unsure what to do?

It depends on the car rental company that you want to rent from. The only company that I could find information from was Avis on their "we try harder" blog.

Their blog response to a question re: credit card holds in France was that they freeze or hold, on the credit card at the time of pickup, the full amount of the rental (including all taxes and surcharges) + the cost of a full tank of gas for the vehicle + an extra €500 deposit . (All of that could easily add up to a €1000 or more!)

It stated that a prepaid reservation would be better. With a prepaid reservation they would charge the full amount of the rental on your credit card when you reserve it. When you go to pick up the vehicle they would charge the cost of the tank of fuel and the cost of any extras you wish to purchase (like insurance, car seat, etc) and you would not have the extra €500 deposit.

SeaWorld Orlando welcomed fourteen-year old British Olympic diver Tom Daley this week. Daley wowed guests in a special performance of his Olympic dives prior to SeaWorld's Blue Horizons show. Daley, who competed in Beijing this summer, was the youngest British Olympic competitor in 60 years.

Drivers License Check for Car Rental

Do car rentals places check your driving record or driver's license?

Car rental companies are legally allowed to do a drivers license check before they may allow you to rent. If they check, they MAY refuse to rent if your driving history shows any of the following:

invalid, suspended or revoked license

One or more convictions for reckless driving within a certain time frame (as determined by the individual rental company.

one DUI, DWI or DWAI conviction within a certain time frame (as determined by the individual rental company)

failure to report/leave scene of accident within a certain time frame (as determined by the individual rental company)

possession of stolen vehicle or use of a vehicle in a crime

expired license

three or more convictions for moving violations within a certain time frame (as determined by the individual rental company) Note: This restriction usually excludes seat belt violations, check with the rental company.

two or more accidents within a certain time frame (as determined by the individual rental company)

La Taverna del Mago

I ate an ostrich last night! This was at La Taverna del Mago, in Verbania, a truly local Italian restaurant. What I mean is, it's purpose isn't to feed multitudes of tourists. Owned by a man known to all only as il Mago, the restaurant is known for it's fresh ingredients, traditional regional cooking, and its superb wine list. First il Mago brought us a little plate of polpette and another of verdure in pastella. Meatballs, and vegetable tempura. Then there were bowls of fettuccine al nero di seppia con gamberi, black pasta with shrimp. Finally, the house specialty I've been wanting for so long to try, Filetto Special di Struzzo Sulla Pietra Ollare, servito crudo e cucinato da te al tavolo. Filet of ostrich on a Ollare stone, served raw and cooked by you at the table. We lay the pieces of ostrich filet on the oven-hot Ollare stone and listened to them sizzle. A couple of minutes for each side was all they needed. This was so worth waiting for. Everything was excellent, from the food to the wine to the service. For two first plates, and the ostrich for two, excluding wine, we spent about 50 euro. Some popular dishes remain on the menu throughout a season, but il Mago will also come to your table to tell you the three special dishes he's prepared each day. If you're lucky, maybe you'll catch one of the special event evenings, such as his all-ostrich meal, or the snail dinner, or when there is a local band playing. The events are listed on the Web site. Coming up soon is the evening of Stoccafisso alla Vicentina...

La Taverna del Mago, Viale Azari, 94, Verbania Pallanza. Closed Monday night.

Gaylord Palms Resort Orlando

Best of Florida Christmas at Gaylord Palms
Featuring ICE!, our frozen family attraction made from 2 million pounds of ice
November 17, 2008 – January 4, 2009

As the Orlando host to the Christmas holiday season, Gaylord Palms Resort offers a slate of activities sure to make you "merry and bright" as part of our Best of Florida Christmas celebration! Our 4.5-acre atrium is transformed into a magical Christmas wonderland, filled with elegant and sometimes whimsical décor, a majestic 54-foot Christmas tree, and a variety of fun-filled activities and entertainment for the entire family.
This year's program features 49 days of holiday revelry, including:
ICE!
Who says the holidays in Florida are all about sunshine and palm trees? Prepare for the coolest winter on record as Gaylord Palms presents ICE!, a walk-through attraction hand-carved from nearly TWO MILLION pounds of ice.
Explore a whimsical winter wonderland of larger-than-life, three-dimensional hand-carved ice monuments and sculptures, including fantastic frozen creations, slippery ice slides, and memorable holiday scenes. As for the chill, visitors are given oversized parkas to stay comfortable inside the attraction, which is kept at a blustery 9 degrees. In its sixth season, ICE! will reflect the theme "Santa's Arctic Blast," featuring several scenes that star "Jolly Cold Saint Nicholas" himself. One such scene is an oversized "Santa's knee" photo opportunity that's likely to be the most photographed element inside the attraction. Another guest favorite, the ICE! slides, have been re-designed to celebrate Santa's Christmas Eve flight... reindeer and all.
The attraction's signature scene, a life-size Nativity carved completely of crystal-clear ice, has been described as one of the most breathtaking depictions of the birth of Christ. Dramatic lighting and a stirring narrative track give guests an opportunity to pause and reflect on the story behind the season.
The attraction is carved by a team of 40 artisans from Harbin, China. The talented artisans spend more than a month in Kissimmee creating this one-of-a-kind attraction. Harbin is best known for its annual International Ice and Snow Festival, where more than 2,000 sculptors annually carve a 100-acre walk-through Ice Park from ice taken from the Songhua River.
NOTE: ICE! is kept at a frigid 9 degrees Fahrenheit. Be sure to dress appropriately: closed-toe shoes and long pants are required.

The Majestic Christmas Tree, perched atop the Castillo de San Marcos Fort, towering more than 70 feet above Emerald Plaza.

Hidden Holiday Gnome Hunt, a festive family hunt throughout the atriums of Gaylord Palms to spot cleverly hidden gnomes.

Christmas in Florida: The County Wreath Collection, an exhibition of wreaths decorated to celebrate Florida's diverse destinations, from coast to coast.

Live stage entertainment, on select dates.

Santa visits, where you can see Jolly Old St. Nick himself. Or, if you're shy, you can send him your wish list by email!

Holiday brunch with Mrs. Claus on select weekends at Villa de Flora. (Reservations recommended)

Lights, Lights, Lights, enjoy elegant, and sometimes whimsical décor and holiday lights throughout each of the resort's three atriums.

Fun Facts About ICE!
2,000,000 pounds of ice will be used to create ICE!
5,000 blocks of ice will be hand carved and transformed into a winter wonderland.
9 degrees Fahrenheit is the average temperature inside "The Florida Fridge," the home of the ICE! attraction.
1500+ fluorescent and fiber optic lights will be frozen within the ice, creating a magical holiday experience.
More than 18,000 total square feet of space is covered by the ICE! attraction. Kept at a brisk 9 degrees, the unique structure housing ICE! is also known as the "Florida Fridge." It is believed to be the first of its kind in North America.

Book your Thanksgiving Car Rental Now!

The Thanksgiving holiday is the peak travel time of the year in the United States. If you're looking to rent a car, you need to start looking now, especially if you're going to need a minivan or large SUV.

Many car rental companies have rate specials going on right now. The goal for them is to get as many cars as possible, booked in advance. These specials will not be available for long. As soon as cars become less available, the prices will start to soar. For any car rental, but especially on Thanksgiving, the longer you wait to book, the less cars available, the higher the price you'll pay! It's the old law of supply and demand.

Here are some tips to help you find a great rate on your Thanksgiving car rental.

1. Start by going to a booking site like Travelocity, Vroomvroomvroom or Expedia. Find the lowest price on the car you want to rent and write down the name of the company, the car size and price.

2. Go to that company's website, or call their toll-free number and check the rate (for the same dates, times and vehicle). Check to see if they have any "specials" or "deals".

3. Use a discount code, if you've got one. There are many membership associations that offer discount codes for different car rental companies. See if you can get the price lower than you found it on the booking site. If you can find a coupon to use... even better!

4. If you find a great deal, book it! Unless you are asked to provide your credit card number, you can always cancel the reservation later if you find something better.

5. Get a reservation number or confirmation email. You many never need it, but it's best to have it!

6. If you find a better deal or decide you don't want to rent a car at all, please call and cancel your reservation. That way the company will be able to immediately put that vehicle back into the system, so someone else can rent it.

Remember to drive carefully, and have a great holiday!

Weather in Orlando: October Sunshine

October is a great month for weather in Orlando—the temperatures are coming down into the 80s, the peak season for hurricanes is behind us, and the afternoon downpours that are so frequent during the summertime arrive less frequently. And since the average October temperature in Orlando feels like the average July temperature “up North,” it’s a great time to enjoy the milder temperatures and shorter lines at the attractions as if you were on summer vacation.

To find out the latest weather in Orlando, all of the websites for the local television stations (www.WFTV.com for ABC affiliate channel 9, www.WESH.com for NBC affiliate channel 2, www.local6.com for CBS station WKMG, and www.myfoxorlando.com for FOX 35 news) feature up to date weather and traffic information, and the WESH site has a new interactive weather map to help website visitors pinpoint the exact weather conditions in their area.
Will it be too expensive to get a rental car for such a long trip

I live in Kalispell Montana, and I plan on driving to Phoenix Arizona in the begining of April for my sister's wedding. I would like to get a rental car, but i'm not sure if it will be far too expensive? It is about 1,300 miles each way and i'll be gone for about 7-9 days. There are several rental agencies near me.. is there one that tends to run cheaper than the others? Also, is there a maximum amount of miles they let you use before they raise the price?

You should check the car rental rates for each agency near you. A great way to start is to go to a booking site, like travelocity or expedia.

Check the rates for Kalispell (both on and off-airport) to find the cheapest company. Then go to that company's website and check the same vehicle, dates and times. Look to see if they are offering any "specials" or "deals" for that time or area. Use a discount code if you qualify. Many membership programs (auto clubs, frequent flyer) and professional associations offer car rental discounts to their members. If you can get the rate cheaper than on the booking site, book it right away. Where you're not planning to travel until April, write down your reservation number and call every 3 weeks or so to see if the price has gone down for your reservation.

Make sure that the rates you get include unlimited mileage. Good Luck; hope this information helps!

Is it right for a car rental place to want a copy of your bank statement

I was sitting in my house. A drunk guy smashed into my car. His insurance is using Enterprise as the company for my car rental while they decide if it's totaled or not. I do not use credit cards so I have a debit card. I gave them that and my drivers license. The woman said she wants to see a utility bill (all in my husbands name), or a bank statement. I am not paying for this car. Progressive insurance is. Why would they think that a bank statement would be their business to make a copy of? I am 46 years old and have lived at my address for 19 years. If that makes any difference? I know that there's a thing about being under 25. They asked how long I've been at my address. It seems that a bank statement would be something that would be inappropriate for them to insist upon seeing. Anyone know anything about this?

Some rental car companies will direct bill the insurance company, while some will require you to pay up front and be reimbursed from the insurance company. I would check with Progressive to see who is paying for the rental upfront. If they do not have a direct bill setup with Enterprise I would request that they go with a different company, one that they are partners with.

Most car rental companies have specific rates set up with different insurance companies for different size vehicles. The insurance company will only allow so much per day and any costs over that is your responsibility. Basically Enterprise is requesting the same information that it would if you were renting the car personally using a debit card. Find out from the insurance company how much per day they are allowing for the rental and how much enterprise is charging for the rental. I would not give any information that you are not comfortable with, as you don't' want to get stuck with a bill for the car rental. It should be the insurance companies job to find a rental car for you that's total price will be covered by what they are willing to pay. You shouldn't have to pay extra.

Are there rental car agency's that allow you to go one-way across the States in the U.S.?

My co-workers and I are planning a trip to Florida to go on a cruise in the Western-Bahamas. We live in Illinois and when we were checking the airfare tickets online, together for just the three of us, would be approx $1000. We are trying to save a few $$ bucks so we can spend more $$ on our excursions.

So, are there any car agency's that happen to go one-way when you rent it? We just need the car for approx. two days to make it down there and then another two to make it back. The cruise is nine days long and it just be ridiculous to pay for days we aren't even using the car as I am sure that will add up more than what the airfare would be.

There are car rental companies that would allow you to do this, but I don't think it would save you any money. I wasn't sure of your pick up or drop off city or dates, but I compared the rates with Avis, Budget and Hertz for a 2 day one way rental from chicago to ft lauderdale and then a 2 day one way rental back. I used a subcompact car picking up late Oct and returning 9 days later.

The Avis rate incl tax was $500 to get to Florida and $200 to return back to Illinois.

Budget was $511 to Florida and $222 to return back to Illinois.

Hertz was $730 to Florida and $455 back

Keep in mind that you would also have the cost of a hotel (unless you were driving straight through), the cost of the gas for the vehicle and the cost of food for you and your coworkers for each trip. The airfare may be cheaper in the long run!

Waterford Lakes Orlando popular with local residents

On any given weekend, Waterford Lakes Orlando is one of the busiest shopping centers in town. Officially known as the Waterford Lakes Town Center, this outdoor shopping venue can be easily accessed from the Alafaya Trail exit off of the 408 East-West Expressway. Waterford Lakes is a popular destination with residents on the east side of Orlando because it provides one-stop shopping for a number of retail, grocery, dining and entertainment needs.

Waterford Lakes Orlando is anchored by a Super Target on the south end and a Best Buy next to an Ashley Furniture store on the north end. Restaurants include Smokey Bones, Longhorn Steakhouse, Romano’s Macaroni Grill, T.G.I. Friday's, California Pizza Kitchen. Johnny Rockets, Chuck E Cheese's and many smaller eateries. The Waterford Lakes AMC 20 features first run movies and offers free kids' flicks twice a week in the mornings during summer vacation. The Barnes and Noble bookstore attracts customers of all ages to leaf through books, grab a cup of coffee, or watch their kids play with the Thomas the Train Engine toys.

The Market Report

It's Friday, so let's talk about the market. Don't worry, not the stock market! Let's talk instead about the Stresa Outdoor Market, which happens every Friday morning in Piazza Capucci . One of my favorite routines. I usually have a mission in mind when I go to the market and today was no different. With the weather forecast still looking nice for tomorrow, and therefore hiking plans still on, I was shopping for some picnic lunch supplies. The market is not huge, but it's certainly big enough and maze-like enough for one to get a little lost in, both figuratively and literally. You can find all sorts of fresh foods here, as well as clothes, shoes, jewelry, housewares, and flowers. The quality of most of the merchandise is good; no used items here, and many of the vendors know at least a bit of English. Since I tend to focus on whatever particular item I'm shopping for each week, it's always like a new market to me. So what picnic goodies did I choose today? Some mortadella and prosciutto, some toma cheese, a piece of polpettone, a few apples, and some dried fruits. After finding my picnic supplies, my nose lead me, like it always does, to the roast chicken vendor. "Un pollo, ben cotto!" One chicken, well cooked!, I asked for. That wasn't for the picnic. That's a Friday lunch routine that is always quite delicious. And it was...

The Stresa outdoor market is open all year, in Piazza Capucci, from early in the morning until 1 pm. Other towns in the area have their market days on other days of the week; if you're a market fan there will always be one somewhere.

The Chestnut Route

The long-range forecast for the weekend looks good and so we are planning to take a walk on one of Stresa's beautiful trails. The choice is between the hike down from the Giardino Alpinia, and The Chestnut Route, also known as the Sentiero dei Castagni. I think I'd prefer the latter this time, partly because I am still in my seasonal chestnut mood, and partly because it is the less strenuous of the two. We can leave right from the center of Stresa and make our way past waterfalls, across meadows, through villages, all on clearly marked and well-defined paths that are, of course, covered in chestnuts this time of year. Taking the trail all the way to it's end would leave us in Belgirate, the next town, where we would have to take the ferry or train back to Stresa. So instead, we may walk about half way, to the small church with the amazing view of the lake, have a little picnic lunch, and then return back the way we came. This walk should take us about 2 hours round-trip; all the way to Belgirate would take longer, about 3 hours. Next question... what should we pack for lunch?

A leaflet titled "Trekking Mottarone", available at the Stresa Tourist Office, details several of the walks in the area.

Sea World Orlando takes on Olympic Hero

British Olympic hero and 14-year old diving prodigy, Tom Daley, will perform in a special pre-show performance at SeaWorld Orlando on Wednesday.

At SeaWorld’s invitation, Tom is opening the park’s popular Blue Horizons show, performing several of the spectacular dives that he executed at the Beijing Olympics this summer.

The performance will kick-start a week’s vacation for Tom and his family, during which time they’re scheduled to visit other Worlds of Discovery parks including Busch Gardens Tampa Bay, where he’ll explore wild life and wild rides; Discovery Cove, to swim with dolphins; and Aquatica, SeaWorld’s new waterpark which opened this spring.

Families wanting to visit SeaWorld Orlando or any of the Worlds of Discovery parks, can book their tickets at Orlando Attraction Tickets

Aperitivo at Al Buscion

Met a couple of friends yesterday for aperitivo at Al Buscion, my favorite wine bar in Stresa. Because it's only one block off the lake, and right next to a few of the biggest hotels in the old center of town, it's a popular spot for tourists. Listen to the conversations around you and you'll hear English, German, French, and maybe even some Italian! Last night the large table in the corner was filled with Germans who were happily celebrating something. One after another, they hushed their group and made toasts that then collapsed the group into laughter. I love the international and happy atmosphere here. But I also love the wine. Buscion is an old Piemontese dialect word meaning the cork in the wine bottle, and wine is really the star here. Massimo enjoys trying new bottles and you never know what's going to be open. I asked for a red wine and I was served a Sangiovese from Montepulciano, very sweet and with a strong cherry aroma and flavor. My next glass of red was also Tuscan, but quite different. I like that Massimo uses beautiful glasses of the right shape for each wine. But the best part of this wine-tasting experience is certainly the price. Most glasses cost only 2 to 3 euro each. That's worth toasting to!

Chestnuts!

Chestnuts! Every autumn Northern Italy has a problem with the overwhelming overabundance of chestnuts. The solution is to hold chestnut festivals in every town and to roast, cook, bake, and enjoy chestnuts in every imaginable way. I met these men, members of the local fire department, doing chestnut duty along the Stresa lakefront one Sunday morning roasting chestnuts in pans over simple fires. A bushel of chestnuts, some red wine, and a lot of smoke later, and I was walking along the water with a paper bag full of hot roasted chestnuts. Restaurants in the area will be serving chestnuts in a variety of ways throughout the season. I've spotted chestnut crepes called necci, chestnut soup, and chestnut gnocchi with toma cheese, just to name a few. The sweetest way of all to prepare these castagne is certainly the marrone glace, in which chestnuts are preserved with sugared liquor into a soft, candied consistency. A box of these can cost more than a box of fine chocolates. A much more economical way to try these is to go into the Jolly Bar and buy just a couple of them to enjoy with your cappuccino.

Polar Express is on the way

Jump aboard The Polar Express Experience when it rolls into SeaWorld this holiday season beginning Nov. 14, 2008 and continuing through Jan. 4, 2009. SeaWorld’s Wild Arctic transforms into the fabled Santa Town taking guests on a magical trip to the North Pole.
The Polar Express Experience is based on the Warner Bros. Pictures and Shangri-La Entertainment film, inspired by the beloved Caldecott Medal-winning children's book by Chris Van Allsburg. The Polar Express Experience is a heart-warming journey, where families share in the excitement and wonder of a truly unforgettable train ride. The adventure unfolds on a Christmas Eve night with a young boy lying awake, eagerly listening for the sound of Santa’s ringing sleigh bells. Filled with excitement and awe, the boy races out his front door, dashes across the freshly fallen snow and climbs aboard The Polar Express.
As the train’s whistle blows, guests embark on the same adventure as they board The Polar Express Experience to the North Pole. Classic scenes from the movie are recreated in a multi-sensory experience immersing passengers in special lighting, scent, sound and motion effects. Upon arrival guests find themselves within a winter wonderland surrounded by holiday cheer, graceful beluga whales, powerful polar bears and giant walruses. They will delight in the smell of Christmas cookies filling the air and bright lights glistening on a festive towering tree as families greet Santa and share in a magical moment.
Across the way, just as the winter air cools and the evening stars appear, families can join Shamu for a magnificent holiday show: “Shamu Christmas … Miracles.” Shamu Stadium will illuminate with bright lights and glowing candles as Christmas carols adored and Shamu splashes to celebrate the holiday season.
While strolling around SeaWorld’s lake or through The Waterfront’s holiday-themed array of gift shops and restaurants, families can wander along a winter scene as glistening snow flurries fill the air. Guests can also experience “Christmastide” – a spectacular holiday fountain show where jewels of water and light adorn the night and dance to the merry musical sounds of Christmas. “Christmastide” begins Nov. 12 and runs through Dec. 25, 2008.
Igniting the spirit of the season is the “Makahiki Christmas Luau,” a South Seas-style festive celebration including succulent island cuisine keeping with the ancient holiday traditions of the Pacific Islands. Joyful songs of the season are reinterpreted with Polynesian rhythms, music and dance during this festive holiday celebration. Prices are $46.00 plus tax for adults and $29.00 plus tax for children (ages 3-9)

Ride Review: The Simpsons Ride at Universal Studios Orlando

The local TV commercials from Universal Studios Orlando says it all, “Are we there yet? Are we there yet? Are we there yet?” So says Bart and Lisa Simpson from the back seat of the family car as Homer takes the family on a trip from Springfield to Universal Studios Orlando to experience the new Simpsons Ride. As Universal’s newest attraction, the Simpson’s Ride is worth the wait—and the wait is also a lot of fun.
Riders enter the attraction through the mouth of Krusty the Clown and are treated to highlights from previous Simpsons’ episodes as they wait in line—an episode featuring “Duff Gardens” is well represented here. The attraction itself is a simulator suitable for riders who are 40 inches or taller—similar to but definitely wilder than the Jimmy Neutron Ride at the other side of the park. There is a storyline leading up to the ride itself—Krusty’s nemesis Sideshow Bob is on the loose (again) and is going after the Simpson family, whom he blames for his recent imprisonment. But look out for baby Maggie Simpson, who has ingested just enough radiation from Springfield’s nuclear power plant to grow into to epic proportions. While you are on the ride, keep an eye out for a couple of Simpsons-style takeoffs on two other Orlando theme parks—because catching the insider jokes on The Simpsons is half the fun.

The Rosen Shingle Creek offers varied dining options including sophisticated Italian cuisine and casual fare at the pool bar and grille. The hotel has three bars. High-speed Internet access and 445,000 square feet of meeting space are featured. Rosen Shingle Creek boasts a 13,000-square-foot spa with nine treatment rooms. The on-site fitness center includes cardiovascular and weight training equipment. This Orlando hotel provides an outdoor pool as well as a children's pool. Tennis courts and golf courses are spread across the 230 acres.

Reader mail: recipes at Food and Wine (another decline)

Reader Noreen emailed about the Food and Wine recipes:

Speaking of declining by degrees, I think the recipe situation at Food and Wine is an interesting case. When I first started attending, each food booth had the recipes for what they were serving printed on lovely recipe cards right there at the booth. I still have many of those cards in my recipe file. A few years later, the recipes were not at the booths, but could be found for free at the Festival Center. Just ask a cast member and they would get them for you. Next, the printed out recipes disappeared, but if you asked, the cast member would email you the recipe. Finally, even that service went away and you had to purchase the book. So if there isn't even a book this year, I guess we're all just out of luck.

What to Do If You're Considering a Car Rental

If you know you'll want to drive when you're abroad, check whether the country you're travelling to needs an international drivers' licence for car rental. If you find that you need one, you can easily apply for one at a post office, or through the AA, however should you apply for your international driving licence through the AA it can take more than ten working days to be processed from the date of receipt.
When you leave for your holiday, make sure you have all the relevant licences and identity documents with you and you will definitely need a credit card, too. Also check the legal requirements for age, and the amount of time you've held a licence. As you may find that some car hire firms have a minimum age, they tend to favour the over 25. Some countries also set a maximum age (in Spain, the maximum age to rent a car is 79). If you don't fit the requirements you will find it hard to hire a car.
When hiring a car you can usually pick one up from your arrival at the airport, as larger airports have airport car rental outlets belonging to the major global car hire companies.
The first thing you need to do is to check the car over to make sure there's no damage it is best do this with an employee from the car rental company before you sign any documents. Also when you return the car, do the same thing and check for damages, also make sure it's noted in writing that you've returned the car with no damage this way you have concrete evidence should a dispute about damages should ever occur. In some countries, you're also liable for any defects in the car such as worn tyres or brakes, so be careful to check.
In some European countries it's a legal requirement to have a fire extinguisher, first aid kit and other safety items in the car, so if you're renting in Europe, check to see that the car has everything it should contain by the law of the country, as the police will hold you responsible as you are the driver.
Make sure you are aware of what the agreements are for fuel, such as do you have to return the car with a full tank of petrol? If so keep all your petrol receipts to prove you filled the car up on return, that way if you have solid evidence to back up your claims if the car hire says otherwise.
Make sure you have adequate insurance and if in doubt cover the car as comprehensively as you can afford. If possible, go for a comprehensive damage cover and check to see what the policy you're offered actually covers, because sometimes car rental insurance excludes damage to tyres, rims, and even stone chipping damage, which could be something to be concerned about in some areas! And of course make sure you're covered for theft.
Be careful that you don't get stung by unexpected charges when you rent a car abroad. As you may find that you have to pay extra for additional drivers, hidden VAT charges, costs of cleaning the car, for car accessories such a child car seat.

Ways to Beat Long Lines at Walt Disney World and Universal

Standing in a long line waiting to ride the hottest new attraction at the theme parks is not the most comfortable way to spend an Orlando vacation, which is why skipping the standby lines is the best way to enjoy a day at Universal Studios/Islands of Adventure or any of the Walt Disney World theme parks.

Both Universal and Disney offer ways to bypass the long lines. Disney’s FastPass enables visitors to insert their admission ticket to receive a FastPass for the most popular rides and return during a designated time. There is a one hour window of opportunity to use the FastPass and it is the best option for Orlando area residents who are not staying in local hotels.

For visitors who are staying in an Orlando area hotel, choosing a hotel on either Walt Disney World or Universal property will be the best way to get to the front of the line. On-site Loews Hotel guests staying at the Loews Royal Pacific Resort, Hard Rock Hotel or Loews Portofino Bay Hotel will receive free Universal Express ride access to skip the regular lines at most rides and attractions at Universal Studios or Islands of Adventure. The only other way to bypass the lines is to purchase Universal Express PLUS Passes, ranging in price from $19.99 to $55.99 + tax per person, per day.

Disney offers their resort guests something called Extra Magic Hours. Each day one of the Walt Disney World Theme Parks opens an hour early or stays open up to three hours after regular Park closing, so Disney Resort Guests can enjoy easy access to the most popular attractions. Purchasing a Magic Your Way Base Ticket with a Park Hopper option will ensure that visitors can take advantage of the Extra Magic Hours at any of the four theme parks.

Entertainment at Disney World: Live Shows at Hollywood Studios

There is no shortage of entertainment options at Disney World—the “House of Mouse” expertly combines thrilling attractions with live shows that keep even the youngest viewers interested in what’s going on. While all of the Disney World theme parks—Magic Kingdom, Epcot, Animal Kingdom and Hollywood Studios—offer live entertainment, Disney’s Hollywood Studios puts a special emphasis on live performances in keeping with its movie studio theme.

Toddlers and preschoolers especially appreciate the interactive Playhouse Disney, which has several performances a day. The featured characters are updated frequently to reflect the most popular programs on the Disney Playhouse schedule on the Disney Channel. Older kids and adults viewers will enjoy the action and adventure of the Indiana Jones Epic Stunt Spectacular and the Lights! Motors! Action Stunt Show that features plenty of explosive entertainment.

A trip to Disney World wouldn’t be complete—for a little girl, at least—without visiting a few of the beloved Disney princesses. Princess Belle comes to life with Beauty and the Beast—Live on Stage, and Voyage of the Little Mermaid combines highlights of the film with live action on stage (use a Fast Pass to get through the line quickly if your little girl really needs to see Ariel). Top off the day with the spectacular Fantasmic light and sound show in the evening, and you will have had a full day of live entertainment at Disney’s Hollywood Studios.

Lake Eola Park, Orlando, FL

What will you be doing on Sunday, October 19, 2008 at 11:00 am? If you live in the vicinity of Lake Eola Park, Orlando, FL., you could be changing a life. Even if you don’t, your donation could help to make the world a brighter place in a developing country. The Partnership Walk 2008 will be taking place on October 19th, and it’s a chance for you to step up and make things happen for people in Africa, Asia, Pakistan or India, or elsewhere.
The Partnership Walk funds multiple incredible projects in the areas of health, education, rural development, civil society and the environment.
If you’ve got a few spare hours, imagine all the good you could do by walking, or sponsoring a walker.

Your money is going to go a lng way toward supplying things like training materials for educational programs in developing countries such as Kenya, or paying the entire yearly salary of a health care worker for a smaller village in India.

Imagine the feeling of knowing that a small donation such as 100 dollars sponsored equipment to outfit a maternity area in India or an entire childhood educational center in a Pakistani class. For little more than 500 dollars, you could build a family a home or a village well in Afghanistan. If you can’t walk yourself then you might care to sponsor another walker such as this one,
Sponsor A Walker
You can register to walk, or to sponsor another walker here and your donation can be charged to either your credit card, or removed from your Paypal account.

There is a lot we can do to change the world with just one small donation at a time. Help to accomplish that.

Orlando International Airport

In addition to being as efficient as an airport can be in this day and age of heightened security, the Orlando International Airport gives visitors a sneak preview of what they can expect on their Orlando vacation. The major theme parks are well-represented at Orlando International Airport: there is a Disney gift shop and a SeaWorld gift shop in the main atrium of the airport—a perfect stop for last minute souvenirs. A food court is also available for passengers who might not be getting a meal included with their flight.

Travelers flying into Orlando International Airport can choose from a number of hotels just outside of the main terminal areas on Semoran Boulevard, or they can save the cost of cab fare or a rental car and stay at the Hyatt Regency Orlando International Airport. The Concierge Service can make travel arrangements for guests who want to visit Orlando attractions, and the hotel offers all of the deluxe amenities that travelers have come to expect from Hyatt hotels. As the only Orlando Florida airport hotel with a Four Diamond rating, the Hyatt Regency Orlando International Airport offers personalized attention that includes delivering guests’ luggage from baggage claim directly to their rooms.

Discovery Cove Welcomes Baby Anteater

The first baby lesser anteater born at Discovery Cove in Orlando, Fla. receives her daily check-up by animal trainer Higinio Covarrubias today at the park. Born Tuesday, Sept. 16, via c-section, the baby needed critical care from the training staff as the mom showed little interest in her newborn. Trainers provided supplemental bottle feedings (every four hours) while successfully introducing baby to mom. Anteaters are one of the many animals guests can interact with at the all-inclusive Discovery Cove.

What’s Your Reason For Celebrating?

The world is full of reasons to celebrate? What's yours?

Celebrations can include anything from birthdays, to retirement to your anniversary, but they should always include Disney.

For that very reason, Disney Parks are going to be, beginning in January of 2009, offering free entrance to those who choose to celebrate their birthday at Disney in 2009.
A special birthday fast pass, which is good for certain kinds of attractions, or a fun card that will be equal to the amount they would pay for a 1 day "Magic Your Way" ticket, is being offered at selected Disney resorts.

To get your free day with Disney, simply register your birthday at the http://www.disneybirthdaytreat.com web site and when your birthday rolls around, and your free Disney celebration offer is given to you you've got even more reason to feel like celebrating.

The Disney celebrations will begin this January, so make sure that you don’t forget to register your birthday and those of the rest of your family with the web site so you can take advantage of the free Disney celebrations offer.

Then, when it's time to go, simply present your valid identification or a birth certificate if the birthday pass is for a child, when you go the the gates at Disney, and you're all set for a day of adventure with your free Disney celebration.
