“The best part about the Karamell-Küche is that we get to share the story of Werther’s and how it all started in Germany, and came to the United States,” said Jannis Huntgeburth, Karamell-Küche caramel chef from Göttingen, Germany. “I love to connect with customers through our story, and even more, I enjoy creating delicious treats like my favorite, caramel-dipped strawberries, that are a customer favorite.”

The shop models itself after an old-world, German caramel kitchen, leaving visitors feeling as though they have gone back in time. Inside Karamell-Küche, customers will find a wide range of tasty treats —brownies, cookies, and fudge made fresh daily, as well as specialty and giftable merchandise that can only be found at the Karamell-Küche at Epcot®. Below is the Werther’s Funny Face Caramel Apple recipe to help you bring the delight of Karamell-Küche to your own family’s kitchen.

Werther’s® Original® Funny Face Caramel Apples

Ingredients:
75 pieces (approx 16.5oz) Werther’s Original Chewy Caramels, unwrapped
2 ounces Werther’s Original Caramel Chocolates Dark Cream, unwrapped
2 ounces Werther’s Original Caramel Chocolates Milk, unwrapped
6 medium-size Granny Smith apples
6 popsicle sticks
2 ounces assorted candies and caramel popcorn
2 tablespoons evaporated milk

Directions:

Wash and dry apples. Insert one popsicle stick in the core of each apple.

Place unwrapped caramels and evaporated milk in stainless steel melting bowl or a 1-quart microwave safe bowl. Microwave on high, stirring every 30-45 seconds until fully melted and smooth, about 2 minutes. If using a stainless steel bowl, heat over very low heat, stirring frequently.

Carefully dip each apple in the melted caramel, using a spoon to cover. The caramel thickens as it cools so it is best to work quickly. If necessary, return the caramel to the microwave for 30 seconds at a time to return it to dipping consistency.

Place apples on wax paper-lined cookie sheet. Meanwhile, place unwrapped Caramel Dark Cream Chocolates into a small microwave-safe bowl and microwave on 80% heat setting, stirring every 30 seconds until melted, about 60 seconds. Repeat with Caramel Milk Chocolate. Be careful not to burn chocolate.

Apply chocolate and candies as pictured to finish off Funny Face Caramel Apples! Serves six. For more information, or to find more caramel recipes, visit www.caramelfest.com.

Hertz signs agreement to acquire Australian Car sharing company flexicar

The Hertz Corporation and Australian car sharing company Flexicar announced today that they have signed an agreement for Hertz to acquire Flexicar, a leading Australian car sharing company. Headquartered in Melbourne, Flexicar provides car sharing services to members throughout Melbourne and Sydney. The Company will be integrated into Connect by Hertz car sharing following closing, which is scheduled for December 1, 2010.

Australian Car Hire

“Connect by Hertz is an integral part of Hertz’s overall strategy to provide total mobility solutions to our customers,” commented Hertz Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Mark P. Frissora. “The Flexicar acquisition, Connect’s first foray into the Australian market, will further strengthen our global car sharing footprint, enabling us to reach a greater audience and to provide our worldwide members access to car sharing vehicles in a sixth country.”

Founded in 2005, Flexicar began on the belief that Australia’s inner city residents needed an affordable and sustainable alternative to car ownership. The Company operates 90 vehicles and has approximately 2500 members throughout Melbourne and Sydney. The Company’s aim is to provide local residents and businesses with driving freedom and flexibility.

“There are three common factors that drive consumers to join a car sharing club: cost savings, convenience and its environmental benefits,” comment Robert Stuart, Senior Vice President, Global Sales for Hertz. “The Australian car sharing market closely mirrors the markets in which Connect serves, including residential, college campuses, and the business community. With a growing membership base and strong car utilization rate, Flexicar provides Connect with immediate access to these key markets.”

Flexicar will ultimately operate under the Connect by Hertz brand, with Flexicar founder Monique Conheady retaining her leadership position as Director of Australian Car Sharing Operations. The acquisition will benefit Flexicar members by offering sophisticated in-car technology, as well as greater access to cars and locations. Flexicar members will also be able to use Connect services in Berlin, London, Madrid, New York, and Paris.

“We’re excited that we will be joining the Connect by Hertz family,” commented Flexicar Chief Executive Officer, Monique Conheady. “Hertz’s infrastructure will enable Flexicar to tap into a wider array of resources, including its state-of-the-art technology, while providing members with greater products and services to enhance their overall experience.”

Operationally, the businesses will benefit from Hertz’s access to a wide variety of cars as well as its in-car Eileo technology, while Flexicar’s regional presence and brand awareness will enable expansion throughout the country. Following closing and for the remainder of the year, the companies will begin transitioning Flexicar into Connect by Hertz.

Connect by Hertz employs the latest in technology to provide a safe and superior customer service. Upon enrolling in Connect by Hertz, members receive a smart chip-enabled Connect card, which gives them keyless entry to any car in the fleet that the member reserves. In the car, a hands-free audio kit connects members to a Member Care Center representative should they have questions, need assistance or need to extend their rental. The in-car technology also enables Connect by Hertz to “communicate” with the vehicle, enabling representatives to unlock, engage and locate vehicles. The technologically savvy cars are also equipped with iPod connectivity, NeverLost(R) in-car navigation systems and EZ Pass transponders.

Dollar Thrifty throws support behind Hertz bid

Car rental giant Dollar Thrifty has offered its support to a $1.46 billion takeover bid from rival Hertz Global Holdings, rejecting a higher bid from Avis Budget Group.

Avis raised the cash portion of its bid to $45.79 a share earlier this month, while keeping the stock portion at 0.6543 of an Avis share.

However, Avis declined to match Hertz’s termination fee, which Dollar Thrifty had requested.

The offer valued Dollar Thrifty at $53.09 a share, or $1.52 billion, based on today’s closing prices, while Hertz’s most recent bid, which it said was final, is worth $50.78 a share, or $1.46 billion.

“Avis Budget has not demonstrated to our satisfaction its proposed transaction can be completed in a timely manner and that it would adequately protect our shareholders in the event that Avis Budget is unable to obtain the required regulatory approvals,” said Tulsa, Oklahoma-based Dollar Thrifty in a statement.

As a result of the decision the Dollar Thrifty board will recommend shareholders vote to approve the Hertz merger at a special shareholder meeting on September 30th.

Merger Deal

Hertz and Dollar Thrifty executed a definitive merger agreement on April 25th this year which was subsequently amended on September 10th.

Under the terms of the deal Hertz will acquire Dollar Thrifty for $43.60 per share in cash, inclusive of a special cash dividend to be paid immediately prior to the transaction closing, and 0.6366 shares of Hertz common stock.

The transaction is subject to customary closing conditions, regulatory approvals, approval by Dollar Thrifty shareholders and payment of the special dividend.

Dollar Thrifty is being advised by JP Morgan and Goldman Sachs and the law firm of Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton LLP.

SeaWorld and National Geographic Turn Shark Encounter Into A Virtual Classroom

Today, SeaWorld Orlando became a virtual classroom as more than 157,000 students from more than 3,500 schools from across the nation, including more than 100 in Florida, interacted with a National Geographic filmmaker and a SeaWorld shark expert. The live webcast and Q-and-A session took place in front of a backdrop of dozens of sharks at the park’s Shark Encounter attraction.

The “virtual assembly” was an opportunity for students to expand their knowledge of wildlife, science and filmmaking with famed National Geographic filmmaker Andy Casagrande. His passion for wildlife has taken him around the world to capture the lives and movements of some of the planet’s most fascinating creatures including sharks.

The SeaWorld assembly is part of National Geographic’s “The Great Migrations Education Initiative” which provides schools with an online educational hub that includes classroom materials and resources such as lesson plans, activities, projects and video clips. The series “Great Migrations” premieres Nov. 7, 2010 on the National Geographic Channel and chronicles epic migrations of animals including sharks.

SeaWorld's "Shark Encounter" plunges guests into the underwater realm of spine-chilling denizens of the deep, including eels, barracuda, venomous fish, and sharks. The highlight of the attraction is a 60-foot shark tunnel that runs through a 600,000 gallon aquarium surrounding visitors with more than 30 sharks, including sand tiger, nurse and brown sharks.

Food: Le "Margheritine"

It wouldn't be a visit to Stresa without trying these biscotti!

Stresa's namesake pastries, the Margheritine di Stresa, have just been cited one of the top ten best-tasting foods from the recent Salone del Gusto. Sigrid Verbert, whose cooking blog Il Cavoletto di Bruxelles is one of the widely followed Italian blogs, with over 25,000 viewers daily, recently visited the enormous food fair in Torino and wrote about her favorites. Of the Margheritine Sigrid wrote, "They come from Stresa, precisely from the Pasticcieria Pompa, and I, who have never tasted them before, I must admit that from last night there will never again be any other biscuits that would stand a chance, these cookies are frankly the best and deliciously crisp."

Here's the backstory on these cookies:

The so-called Margheritine di Stresa were created in 1857 in the pastry shop of Pietro Antonio Bolongaro. The shop still exists in Stresa today, the Pasticcieria Pompa aforementioned, which can be found on Via Gignous, where it meets with Via P. Tomaso. He created them for the young princess Margherita di Savoia, who would become the future Queen Margherita, on the occasion of her first communion which was celebrated that year. And ever since, the biscotti, typical of Stresa, have been known, sold, and celebrated by the name Margheritine.

London Heathrow Aiport

Car rental at London Heathrow

By: benjackson

London Heathrow is by far the busiest airport in the UK. It served close to 67 million passengers in 2008, almost double the number handled by the UK's 2nd busiest airport, London Gatwick. The airport is located 14 miles to the west of central London in the Borough of Hillingdon. Along with London City Airport, London Heathrow is one of only two airports serving the capital to be located within the Greater London area. Overall, London Heathrow is the worlds 3rd busiest airport; only Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport and O'Hare International Airport, Chicago, handle more passengers. In terms of international passenger numbers, London Heathrow is the busiest international airport in the world, followed by Charles de Gaule International Airport in Paris and Amsterdam Airport Schiphol. The airport currently has 5 terminals; the 5th was opened by Queen Elizabeth II in 2008. Around 100 scheduled and charter airlines offer flights from London Heathrow to short-haul and long-haul destinations all over the world. London Heathrow's top destination in 2007 was John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York. Other destinations in the top ten for that year were Dublin, Amsterdam, Paris, O'Hare Chicago, Dubai, Hong Kong, Frankfurt, Los Angeles and Madrid (in descending order respectively).

London Heathrow is an important hub for BMI, British Airways and Virgin Atlantic. British Airways has by far the largest presence here; the airline is currently the sole user of Terminal 5. It offers flights from London Heathrow Airport to domestic and international destinations throughout the UK, Americas, Asia/Pacific, Europe, Middle East and Africa. BMI offers flights from London Heathrow to popular domestic and European locations as well as less common international destinations such as Addis Ababa, Almaty, Bishket, Damascus, Khartoum, Tbilisi and Tehran. Virgin Atlantic serves long-haul destinations in the US, Asia/Pacific, Middle East and Africa. Other major airlines offering flights to and from London Heathrow Airport are Air New Zealand, United Airlines, Lufthansa, Air Canada, Air India, American Airlines, Pakistan International Airlines, Emirates, Scandinavian Airlines System, Delta Airlines and Qantas.

As is to be expected of such an important travel hub, London Heathrow is well connected to the local and national transport networks, so your journey to and from the airport won't be difficult. There are four stops on the London Underground serving the airport, an express train service linking the airport to London Paddington railway station, plus rail link coach services to Reading and Woking railway stations. Full transport details and information can be found on the airport website.

If you can't find flights to London Heathrow, then the closest alternative airports are London City, London Luton, London Stansted and London Gatwick.

Hertz Is Expanding

The Hertz Corporation continues the expansion of Hertz Local Edition, its U.S. off-airport car rental business, with 60 new locations opening during the remainder of year. By the end of December, Hertz will have opened more than 250 new locations in 2010. The openings are part of a Company-wide strategy to accelerate expansion in the off airport car rental market servicing the replacement, leisure and business customers in this segment.

“Our revenues continue to expand at a double-digit rate in the off airport market, and we are increasing our investment to meet anticipated demand,” commented Mark P. Frissora, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer for The Hertz Corporation. “Since the beginning of the year, we’ve opened 192 new locations and we’re committed to an additional 60 location openings before year end. We are opening in the most cost efficient manner possible, partnering with key local businesses which generate car rental demand. As a result, we will easily surpass $1 billion of revenues in 2010, up more than $100 million over 2009, and early next year we will open our 2,000th off-airport location. The off airport segment is strategically critical for Hertz as we continue to develop new and expanded partnerships in the replacement market, offering customers pick up and delivery service, as well as growing our leisure and business rentals,” Frissora concluded.

Expanding market share rapidly in the $10 billion off-airport market, Hertz is primarily co-locating with body shops, hotels and repair facilities to serve the needs of local market customers. Off-airport rentals, which include leisure and local business rentals, replacement rentals and monthly or multi-month rentals, have a longer average length of keep, which drives revenue per transaction.

The car rental expansion confirms Hertz’ commitment to serving customers seeking to rent cars for insurance replacement, business trips, vacations and everyday purposes. Serving the insurance replacement industry for more than 10 years, Hertz currently has approximately 1,900 off-airport locations nationwide, the majority of which offer pick up and delivery service, and is a recognized supplier to more than 193 of the 209 largest insurance companies. Hertz Local Edition provides customers with a full range of rental vehicles, including compact through full-size cars and SUVs, and Hertz #1 Club Gold(R) counter service. The majority of Hertz Local Edition locations offer insurance replacement rentals.

The Hertz Corporation, a subsidiary of Hertz Global Holdings, Inc. Hertz is the number one airport car rental brand in the U.S. and at 81 major airports in Europe, operating both corporate and licensee locations in cities and airports in North America, Europe, Latin America, Australia and New Zealand. Avis pre-orders 500 Renault electric vehicles for hire

Avis will offer its customers the chance to hire and experience driving an electric vehicle in the following countries: France, Spain, United Kingdom, Germany, Italy, Belgium, and Portugal.

Pascal Bazin, Chief Executive Officer for Avis Europe, explains: “At Avis, we’re committed to providing customers with choice when it comes to mobility and our partnership with Renault is another way in which we are fulfilling this commitment by expanding our fleet to include electric vehicles. The vehicles complement our existing mobility offer, providing an alternative to traditional car hire that will benefit both business and leisure customers who are concerned about their impact on the environment.”

Senior Vice President, Renault Corporate Sales Division, Uwe Hochgeschurtz, adds: “We are the only European carmaker who is developing a complete range of affordable electric vehicles with our own batteries, our own technologies and our own production system to guarantee a high level of quality and performance. By hiring an electric vehicle through Avis, the public will be able to experience new driving technology and learn about the environmental benefits of electric vehicles.”

Renault has just revealed the first two production models of its electric vehicle range: Kangoo Express ZE, a light commercial vehicle, and Fluence ZE, a family sedan.

Renault’s range of electric vehicles will later be extended by two new cars, exclusively designed for electrical power:

- Renault Twizy, a nimble and practical electric vehicle for city motoring (2 seats – 4 wheels)
- Renault ZOE, a compact and flexible hatchback for everyday use.

The Renault electric vehicles join Avis’ already extensive eco mobility offering. Each car on the Avis fleet is typically only six months old, to ensure maximum fuel efficiency, whilst the average CO2 emissions for cars purchased in 2009 was just 144.6g CO2/Km. The company also offers hundreds of vehicles which run on fuels other than petrol or diesel, while both leisure and business customers have the option to offset their carbon emissions prior to their journey.

With a long history of environmental awareness, Avis has offset more than 156,000 tonnes of CO2 since 1997 by investing in a host of environmental initiatives such as renewable energy, methane capture projects and tree planting, which means the company has been CarbonNeutral® accredited for more than a decade.

Hertz Europe said Tuesday it plans to accelerate its adoption of self service technology by rolling out "Self Service Express" touch screen kiosks at selected locations across nine countries in Europe for all customers (not just members-only) who have prepaid for their rental.

Similar to an airline check-in kiosk, the "Self Service Express" touch screen kiosk is a reservation-based system that collects the customer's personal information, identifies the customer's reservation and completes the rental car pick-up process. In addition, the solution allows Hertz customers to select and purchase upgrades, optional insurance and waiver products, fuel options and add-ons such as child seats and the Hertz NeverLost in-car satellite navigation system.

The Self Service Express Kiosks complement the Hertz Worldwide Online Check-in program, which allows customers to begin the check-in process in the comfort of their home or office before they travel.

The kiosks from NCR Corporation use a highly reliable common use self service software platform that has already been adopted by many airlines to enable customers to check-in quickly and easily for their flights. NCR is also providing Hertz with comprehensive hardware support services, including remote management and helpdesk assistance on a global basis.

The Hertz Self Service Express Kiosks are already available at the following airports in Europe: Bergamo Orio al Serio, Milan Linate, Milan Malpensa, Rome Ciampino, Rome Fiumicino, Pisa (Italy); Edinburgh, London Heathrow, London Stansted, Prestwick (UK); Malaga (Spain); and Frankfurt Hahn (Germany). Further roll-out plans are underway in Belgium, France, Germany, the Netherlands and Switzerland. The company also plans to enable the kiosks to accept non-prepaid tariffs in early 2011.

In addition, Hertz has launched a free iPhone application available in 18 languages for customers in Europe. The Hertz iPhone application allows customers to make reservations, save their Hertz #1 Club member number, search and find nearby Hertz locations, save favorite locations and receive special promotions via their mobile devices.

Transportation: Train Service From Malpensa Airport To Stresa And Milano

When the seasonal summer direct bus from Malpensa to Lago Maggiore is not running, the next-best way to reach Stresa is by train. The way to do this seems a bit confusing at first, and there is now a new train service from Malpensa, so let's review these two things. How to get to Stresa from Malpensa by train, and what this new train service offers.

To recap train service: To reach Stresa by train from Malpensa the fastest way remains to switch in Busto Arsizio using the Trenitalia trains. As you can see in the map below this is a much shorter route than going into Milano. Take a Trenitalia train from Malpensa's Terminal 1 to Busto Arsizio. From the Trenitalia station in Busto Arsizio take a train for Stresa.

As the map illustrates, it is a much shorter route to Stresa via Busto Arsizio than to travel into Milano.

If you are going to Milano however, there is now a new choice for you. In the past, the only way to reach Milano from Malpensa by train had been by taking a train from the airport to Stazione Cadorna, and vice versa, from Milano one could only reach Malpensa from Cadorna. Passengers who wanted to take a train from or to Stazione Centrale needed to take a bus or a metro from Cadorna to reach Centrale. (The metro may be the more handy method, as it won't have the risk of becoming stuck in Milano's unpredictable traffic.) And passengers traveling from Milano Centrale could not reach Malpensa directly by train.

But now that has finally changed. The new Freccia Rossa high-speed line connects Malpensa with Centrale. At present only two trains a day are running this route: 12:21 and at 19:21, and the trip takes 40 minutes.

To sum up: The best way to reach Stresa by train from Malpensa is still by taking the Trenitalia train from Malpensa to Busto Arsizio, then switching in Busto Arsizio, taking a train for Stresa. NOTE: YOU MUST TAKE THE TRENITALIA TRAIN FROM MALPENSA, NOT ANY OTHER LINE. YOU WILL BUY A TRENITALIA TICKET FOR MALPENSA TO STRESA. And from Stresa to Malpensa do the same. Buy a Trenitalia ticket from Stresa to Malpensa, but you MUST remember to disembark in Busto Arsizio, and catch the train from Busto Arsizio to Malpensa. (This will bring you to Terminal 1 at Malpensa by the way... to reach Terminal 2 you will then need to take the Malpensa shuttle bus between the two terminals.)

And the new good train news is that there are now new train options from Malpensa to Milano that can bring you quickly into that city, either to enjoy a stay there or to continue on to other destinations, such as Bologna or Firenze, easily, via the Trenitalia train system.

Use the Trenitalia English website to plan your train travel.

Thank you!

The person who shows up to rent the car must have the credit card in their own name.... it's not permissable to use someone elses credit card, I'm afraid.

You may want to look into cash qualification for rental. I have some information on this on my Car Rental Tips website:

Cash Qualifications for Car Rental Guidelines

Hope this helps

Hotels near University of Central Florida

Many of the travelers who come to Orlando for a vacation might not realize that Orlando is also a college town. Even though the University of Central Florida is among the youngest of Florida’s state universities (it was founded in 1963 to provide technically trained graduates for the nearby Space Coast) UCF is currently Florida’s largest university and the third largest university in the nation by enrollment with almost 54,000 students. With a university this big, there needs to be a variety of places for guests to stay, and fortunately there a number of hotels near the University of Central Florida to choose from.

Hotels within a two mile radius of the University of Central Florida include the LaQuinta Inn and Suites, Crestwood Suites Orlando UCF Hotel, Homewood Suites by Hilton and Days Inn & Suites UCF/Research Park. Many more hotels are located in east Orlando as well as nearby Winter Park, Florida. These hotels are ideally situated for business travelers and are close enough to the local expressways to access downtown Orlando as well the world-famous attractions just south of downtown. Although the main campus of the University of Central Florida is on the east side of town, the newly opened UCF medical school is on the south side of Orlando off of the 417 Greeneway expressway, making it very accessible to the Walt Disney World resort area.
