Morellino di Scansano at Buscion

Massimo called and said, "I have a new Morellino in... come and try it." And when Massimo tells you to come and try a wine, you do, because it is going to be good. So we went to Buscion. The day was rainy; it's been raining a lot in this spring. I had a giant umbrella with me, it had the classic Burberry plaid print on it; there was another woman in Buscion wearing a hat and scarf in the same print. I worried a bit for my umbrella, which I had left outside.

I'd never heard of Morellino before. Morellino di Scansano, from the southern coastal region of Tuscany. Tell me about it, I said to my friend, who's a bit of a wine guy. "Morellino is Chianti's little brother," he told me. "He's from the same region. Morellino is just a very local name for the Sangiovese grape from which the Chiantis and the Brunellos of the region are made. In the village of Scansano, in the area of Tuscany called Maremmo, they call this grape Morellino." The wine was fresh and crisp, as Morellinos can be served young, as early as March after the harvest. Massimo brought over my vitello tonnato, a local favorite. Veal filets, sliced thin and served with a white sauce made of tuna, mayonnaise, and capers spread over the top.

"It's hard to grow up as Chianti's little brother," my wine guy friend continues, " in his shade... It's worthless to try to look like him, or to fight against his popularity. The only thing he can do, Morellino, is to have his own personality, and to stress his own qualities that make him unique. That way, even when his big brother Chianti is hanging around with his friends Brunello and Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, little Morellino di Scansano will still stand out." And he does... Morellino was awarded the coveted DOCG designation in 2007.

And this is why I love coming to Buscion. It's a small place, local and friendly. Sometimes it's crowded with tourists, like this day when they were inside escaping from the rain. But I never have to choose what to try. Massimo always has a suggestion. and I always learn a new thing or two about wine. And when I left, my big Burberry umbrella was still outside waiting for me, leaned outside the door.

A glass of Morellino at Buscion was 3.50 euro. Go to Buscion and ask Massimo to recommend something to you. You'll be glad you did.

disney dining reservations - another visitor dismayed by 90 days

From Reader Ben:

We're currently planning our summer trip to WDW for this year. We booked
a room at the Yacht Club (mostly for its proximity to Epcot), but were
later offered a much less expensive room at the Swan. We have kept the
Yacht Club reservation for now in case the rate goes down (in this
climate, one never knows what deal might appear), since we don't have to
cancel it until July 4th. This will become important in a moment.

Anyway, last week I started mulling over what restaurants we might want
to eat at, seeing as the 90 day reservation limit was approaching. On
our last big trip in 2007 I made the reservations a full 180 days in
advance, back when the limit was as such. I don't do so because I seek
to control and pre-plan every aspect of our visit (quite the opposite)-
but because I know it will be a hassle to get a table without a
reservation and that furthermore the best reservations (or, in some
cases, all reservations) get booked up quickly, especially now that the
booking window is halved.

So today I called up with my list of restaurants and times- 89 days in
advance of our arrival. After going through the extensive automated menu
system, I was finally granted a live cast member. First I was asked for
my hotel confirmation number, which I assumed was merely so that the
reservations could be synced in the system to our hotel reservation, or
if we had the Disney Dining Plan, that, and so forth.

In fact, however, there was more to it than that. It seems that under
the new system (which, the cast member informed me, has only been in
place for two weeks), Disney Resort guests can make reservations 90 days
plus 10 days in advance. This means that one can call up 90 days in
advance of your stay and then make reservations for your entire visit.

I, however, was staying at the Walt Disney World Swan, and this, I was
told, did not count as a "Disney" resort as such. While Swan and Dolphin
guests are usually bestowed most of the perks of Disney owned resorts,
such as the ability to enjoy Extra Magic Hours, this was not one of
them. As a result, I could only make reservations for the first and
second days of my 10 day trip, which fell in the 90 day window.

The idea that I would have to call back every day and make the
reservations one at a time was a tad annoying, but not so much an issue.
The bigger problem was that resort guests (who, I would assume. make up
the vast majority of those who make such reservations far in advance)
would have a 10 day jump on me, and there was as such a much greater
chance those choice reservations would be unavailable by the time my
booking window rolled around.

It occurred to me at this point, however, that I still had my Yacht Club
reservation. Using the confirmation number of that, I was able to make
the rest of my reservations.

I suppose the most obvious interpretation of this is that it is yet
another reason to stay at a Disney resort- a fair perk they can offer
and another layer of the "Destination Disney" program. Between the
shorter reservation window and the 10 day head-start for resort guests
in the know (this fact, after all, was not listed on the WDW website as
far as I could find, only the 90 day window), this means it will be even
more difficult to get dining reservations, especially for those cases
where restaurants overlook fireworks such as the California Grill, and
for the Fantasmic! dinner package. It is easy to foresee, as well, that
those enterprising souls who make their reservations as early as
possible will start calling 100 days in advance and making their
reservations one day at a time, so that many reservations will be
snapped up even once the publicized 90 day window rolls around. Thus it
will go from a convenience of being able to make all of one's
reservations at once to a further inconvenience.

While I can't blame Disney for the rule, or call it unfair, other than
the fact that it doesn't seem well publicized, it is definitely another
step in a bad direction for the average WDW guest trying to get a table
at a restaurant.

Remy - how it's done

Joe writes in with this:

I enjoy your posts on MiceAge and Ultimate Orlando and wanted to
say that when I read about Remy a month or so ago. I rushed out to a
nice lunch at Les Chefs de France to see for myself. Remy's control is a
small directional pad (like an old NES controller) on top of the handle
of the lid with buttons on the bottom of the handle. I believe there is
also a trigger on the cart somewhere when the handler triggers the "song
and dance" routine. During the "show" the handler never puts the lid
down you will notice...
Our handler, when asked about Remy speaking, said that in the noisy
environment his small voice wasn't loud enough but he (the handler)
would lean in close to get any answers directly from Remy.
I attempted a few times to get a good shot of the lid handle, but I
noticed that the handler was very careful to keep the lid obstructed
when the camera's were out. You can read my little review at my blog
here
.
If you scroll down in my pictures I got a pretty shot of the handler
taking the lid off and you can sort of see his bent thumb on the top
were the D-pad is. I was quite impressed with the animatronics. It can't
be that easy to make something that small work well. I also thought it
was great that they can spin the plate around so he can face different
directions.

Booking a Rental Car on Hotwire

I'm getting ready to book a rental car on Hotwire. The price seems good, but I am a little reluctant since the reservation is not refundable.

Also, they state that the rental car company will place a hold on my credit card for a deposit in addition to the up front payment I will be making. Usually, the rental company holds the amount you will be required to pay when you return the car...so how much is the extra deposit usually? My total quote from Hotwire is $300.

Thanks!

With Hotwire, keep in mind that the reservation, in addition to being non-refundable, is not modifiable either. (ie, if your flights were changed to a different time or day, etc)

Most car rental companies require a minimum hold of $250 or the amount of the rental, whichever is higher. In your case that would mean they would have to hold the additional $300 at the time of pick up.. (over and above what you've already paid) those funds would be frozen on your credit card until the minivan is returned.

If you're nervous about prepaying your rental car upfront, try comparing rates through a booking site like Travelocity. Once you find the cheapest company, try going to their website directly and see if they have any online deals that are cheaper. You can also try checking rates using a car rental discount code if you have one. There are hundreds of membership programs and professional associations that offer car rental discount codes to their members.

Hope this helps and good luck!

Stresa in Literature -- Follow Me to Stresa

I haven't read it yet... but I just heard that Susan D. Ree, of Salt Lake City, UT, has recently self-published her first novel, which is entitled Follow Me to Stresa. The reviews say that it's a part romance/part mystery/part travelogue story revolving around an American woman, Ruth Adamson, on a three-week tour of Italy, during which she becomes involved with a mysterious man, Jack Anthony, who she has met on the plane. Her tour begins and ends in Stresa, and apparently the details are accurate apart from a dinner scene in the grotto of the Borromeo Palace.

Hmmm, I wonder if she ever took aperitivo at Buscion ... ?

Here's the link to Follow Me to Stresa on Amazon.com.

Church Street Orlando

Church Street in downtown Orlando is the nightclub district favored by young locals as well as out-of-town visitors who prefer their nightlife to be stroller free. Some of the most popular nightclubs in downtown Orlando are situated here, including Chillers (shown at left), Big Belly, Latitudes, and Antigua. Other dance bars, like Tabu Nightclub and Club Firestone, are located just off of Church Street on Orange Avenue.

The Church Street Station is clearly visible from the eastbound side of I-4 and spans both sides of Church Street and both sides of CSX’s A Line tracks. In the early 1970s the station was developed as an entertainment complex with bars and restaurants, and by the mid-1980s it was one of the top tourist attractions in the state of Florida. After Walt Disney World added Downtown Disney and Universal Orlando created CityWalk, tourists tended to gravitate to the nightlife offerings that were closest to the attractions, and many stores and restaurants at Church Street Station began to close down.

Today, Church Street Orlando maintains a smaller, but lively local crowd, with the added benefit of inexpensive, easy to find parking, plus a pub crawling atmosphere that is distinctly different from the larger, touristy crowds.

Why are Car Rental Taxes So High

I thought I found a great deal on a rental car for $20 a day, but when I looked at the total on the rate quote, I was being charged an extra $18 a day in taxes and surcharges! What are all these fees for and is there any way to avoid them?

A 2005 study from Travelocity states that major American airports tacked on an average of 25.8 percent to your total bill (up from 24.4 percent in 2003) in airport fees as well as local and state taxes. There are so many added fees beyond just the rate itself. The fees basically fall into three categories... Concessionary, government imposed and service related.

Concession Fees are things like an airport or location concession fee.

An airport fee or airport concession fee is a recovery fee. The airport charges the car rental company a certain percentage of each rental, for the right to operate on or near the airport. This fee is collected by the car rental company and paid to the airport.

If you are picking up a rental car at a hotel-based location, you may see a hotel concession recovery fee, include in your car rental taxes and surcharges. It is the same concept as an airport fee.

These fees can be avoided by renting at an off-airport or neighborhood location, but make sure to compare rate totals... sometimes the base rates are higher at the off airport locations and the cost of having to get transportation to the location (if you are arriving at an airport) will offset any saving you might get!

Government Imposed Fees

Many local governments charge fees to fund local development projects, such as convention centers or sports stadiums.

The added taxes (such as a convention center surcharge) are imposed by local and state governments, as a means of drawing income from travelers in order to fund local projects. Travelocity's 2005 research findings also showed such taxes to be dramatically lower at neighborhood car rental locations than airport locations, averaging only 14.1 percent of the final cost.

Many renters feel that it is the car rental companies that make up all these extra convention surcharges or stadium taxes and fees, but they are, in fact, government imposed. (Either by the state or city)

Besides airport fees, state taxes and licensing fees, Rental car fees have long been a means for local governments to generate funds for stadiums, convention centers and concert halls in various cities.

In enacting these fees city officials believe that local constituents are shielded from payment because out-of-town visitors — and therefore non-voters — carry most of the burden. The car rental industry argues against such fees and taxes that have nothing to do with rental car operations. "It's inequitable and unfair because they're unrelated," says Laura Bryant, a spokeswoman for Enterprise in an article in USA Today in October of 2006.

Sales tax and airport charges vary considerably from state to state and from country to country. Unfortunately, you probably can't avoid state and local sales taxes -- or the European equivalent, the value-added tax (VAT), which can be as high as 25 percent. (Note that in some countries you may be entitled to a partial refund of the VAT.)

Service Related Fees

Most car rental companies now have a number of fees like an "energy surchage", fuel fees, cancellation fees, etc. These fees have been added to try and offset the costs of operating the rental location, refuelling and cancellations of reservations. (The car rental companies report an average no show rate of around 30%.) While you can't avoid the energy fee, you can make sure to fill your tank before you return and make sure you show your reciept, to get the fuel fee waived, and if at all possible, make sure to give the required cancellation notice, in order to avoid no show or cancellation fees.

It's definitely a frustrating thing when the cost of all the taxes and surchages add up to sometimes more, per day, than the actual cost of the rental car itself!!

Settimana del Tulipano at Villa Taranto

There are 40,000 tulips blooming this week at Villa Taranto. 65 varieties. Today is the first day of the annual Settimana del Tulipano,” “Week of the Tulips”, festival. Since 1957, the gardens have started off each new season with this explosion of tulips. It’s a beautiful way to draw visitors back to one of the most spectacular gardens in the Stresa area.

While you’re admiring the thousands of tulips that cover the 16 hectares of gardens here, ponder these tulip facts. Keep in mind that tulip bulbs are not easy to cultivate on a year-after-year basis, especially in climates such as this. The bulbs need to be planted deep here, at least 12 inches, to protect them from summer heat. This forces them to regenerate one large bulb each year, rather than several small, nonblooming ones. But eventually, soon actually, the bulb size degrades and no new flower develops. In other words, while you are admiring these tulips, be aware that these 40,000 bulbs are planted new each summer, to be enjoyed only for this week the next spring. They are ephemeral, and therefore should be appreciated all the more…

This year some of the more special varieties on display are the very rare 'Queen of Night' black tulip, the 'Big Chief', whose blossom is an enormous 10 centimeters in diameter, and the 'Fancy Frills' tulip, whose petals edges are not smooth, but ruffled like those of an orchid.

I was at Villa Taranto last October, during the last week of last season. As each season begins with a tulip festival, each season ends with a dahlia festival. I had posted a few photos from my day (see them here). That's what's so wonderful about a garden like this; no matter how often you go, it's never the same place twice...

Here's the Villa Taranto English homepage. The gardens are open from April 1 through October 31, from 8.30 to 19.30 each day. The best way to get there from Stresa is by boat; the imbarcadero in Pallanza is directly across from the entrance to the gardens. Taking the bus is also possible, but this does require a few minute walk from the bus stop. By car, Pallanza is about 15 minutes from Stresa, but parking may be difficult to find.

One other interesting note... The property of Villa Taranto adjoins both Villa San Remigio and the Chiesa di San Remigio. However, due to the topography of the land, the entrances are not an easy walking distance from each other. And anyway, two such gorgeous gardens in one day might be just too much to bear...

Top 3 List of Must Do's at Walt Disney World

Disney guests who want to be literally in the middle of the theme park action are in for a treat – or three – at Walt Disney World Resort this spring. Imagine performing a vocal onstage in front of a thousand people. Or being part of an audience that evaluates and votes on vocal performances. Or playing the role of a world adventurer crusading to thwart the bad guys. Or a party-goer who “gets down” and dances in the street.

Three new experiences will allow spring vacationers to participate in all those activities following debuts in late January and February of ‘The American Idol Experience’ at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, Disney’s Kim Possible World Showcase Adventure at Epcot and “Move It, Shake It, Celebrate It!” Street Party at Magic Kingdom.
Here’s a snapshot of each experience:

The American Idol Experience” – Starry-eyed Disney guests get a taste of the pop culture phenomenon “American Idol” – up close and personal by experiencing the challenge of auditioning and the rush of performing onstage in competition or judging the performances in a live interactive setting modeled after the “American Idol” set. There are several show times daily. Guests advancing through the screening process to the nightly final competition can earn a guaranteed reservation for a regional audition for the “American Idol” TV show by topping the audience voting.

Disney’s Kim Possible World Showcase Adventure – In an experience inspired by Disney Channel’s Emmy Award-winning “Kim Possible” animated series, guests become secret agents to save the world from comical villains and their mad inventions in this interactive adventure packed with mystery and excitement. Guests team up with members of Team Possible in this high-tech adventure in Epcot’s Mexico, Norway, China, Germany, Japan, France and United Kingdom pavilions. Each pavilion features a different mission and villain from the TV series.

Move It, Shake It, Celebrate It!” Street Party – It’s party time when a cast of Disney characters, stilt walkers and other performers processes down Main Street, U.S.A. toward Cinderella Castle to high-energy tunes such as “Breakout” and “I Like To Move It.” Floats decked out as gift-wrapped packages are part of the procession, and near the castle, Mad Hatter, Genie, Lumiere and Sebastian – the life and light of the party – pop out of four huge boxes. They join about a dozen other Disney characters headed by Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse to mix and mingle and dance in the street with Magic Kingdom guests during a 12- to 15-minute party that takes place three times daily.

While in Magic Kingdom, guests may want to check out the “refreshed” 3 o’clock parade. New music, new costumes and some new float dĂ©cor are now part of the parade. The procession also makes more stops – during which party dancers perform to get guests into a celebratory spirit. And to go with the changes, the parade has a new name: “Celebrate A Dream Come True.” It and the street party are part of Disney Parks’ program “What Will You Celebrate?” which began in January.

FYI -- Using The Bus System In Stresa

This is where the bus stops in Stresa. Wait by the pole with the sign. There is a schedule posted on the pole. The lake and the imbarcadero are to your right; the Chiesa di Sant'Ambrogio, the light blue, large church, is to your left.

Taking the buses in Stresa to get around shouldn’t scare you. It’s easy, inexpensive, and can get you to a lot of places that you can’t reach by train, or without a car. The concerns are usually which bus to take, how many buses will I need to get where I want to go, and what is the schedule?

Hopefully this post will help to alleviate some of those concerns.

The following link brings you to a very good, interactive map of the VCO local bus system. Perhaps open it in another window to follow these directions at the same time.

Open the link here.

You are now on the home page for the bus site, with a choice of summer schedule, from June 14 through September 8 (orario estivo), or the winter schedule for the rest of the year (orario invernale). Let’s use the summer schedule here as an example. The map looks like this, but is interactive on the site.

Let’s say you want to go to Orta, on Lago Orta, which is a popular and worthwhile day trip from Stresa. Click on the dot representing Stresa. This will bring up a list on the left of various routes available from Stresa. Clicking through on those routes will bring up a red line on the map, indicating the path of that route. Is there a direct route to Orta? There is (Stresa – Gignese – Armano – Orta.) Next, with that route showing, click on the small magnifying glass icon. This will open an Adobe document with the time schedule for that route.

.

The main Stresa stop, (Stresa Imb. Nord,) is on the road near the imbarcadero, across from the Chiesa di Sant'Ambrogio. Let’s say you take the 10 am bus from Stresa; you will arrive at the Orta Promenade at 11. And the bottom schedule shows that there are buses at 3 pm and 6 pm to bring you back to Stresa.

By the way:

Fer = Weekdays and Saturdays

Ven = Fridays

Gior = Buses that run everyday

This Orta example fortunately has a direct bus from Stresa. What if your destination doesn’t? Check various routes with the thought of changing in one of the towns to get where you want to go. Carefully check the times of the buses, to be sure that you can make connections.

Costs are not listed here; but I find the bus system to be a very economical mode of transportation, plus, you get to see a bit of the hearts of towns along the way. Maybe even someplace you’d like to visit next.

It seems complicated, but let’s face it, there is a lot of information here. After playing around a bit with the map you should get the hang of it. If not, feel free to ask me. Sono qui per questo, I’m here for this

UCF Orlando

Most people think of Orlando, FL as the tourism capital of the southeastern United States, but did you know that it is also a college town? The University of Central Florida has more than 50,000 students attending classes on UCF’s main campus on the east side of Orlando (just take University Avenue all the way east) and its 11 regional campuses throughout Central Florida. Many UCF graduates remain in the Orlando area, making UCF Knights bumper stickers almost as commonplace as Walt Disney World antenna toppers.

Compared to Florida State, the University of Florida and the University of Miami, UCF is a relative newcomer, founded in 1968. Forty years later, UCF has become the fifth-largest university in the nation, and it is still expanding with the newly established College of Graduate Studies and the College of Medicine.

The College of Medicine is particularly exciting for local residents because it will create thousands of jobs as part of “Medical City” of research institutions and hospitals being built in the southeastern part of Orlando. The UCF College of Medicine is the first medical school in US history to offer full four-year scholarships to an entire class—over 4300 applicants competed for 40 slots in the new Med School. Driving in Dubai - All the Information You Need

Driving in Dubai - All the Information You Need
When considering travelling to a certain country for a holiday it is important to do your homework about finding as much information out as possible before your departure date. Even before your flight booking, after you have worked out your budget, you will definitely be considering how to get around while on holiday. A major part of your holiday is to take in all the sights and this requires transportation.

A holiday to Dubai would entail the following considerations. Public transport is somewhat limited in Dubai. There is a comprehensive bus network operated by the Dubai Municipality. Travelling by taxi is a better suggestion. Dubai has a taxi fleet of around 5,000, so it is pretty easy to flag one down or order one to come and pick you up wherever you are. Hiring a car is definitely the best option but a pricier one. To get the most out of your holiday to Dubai, hiring a car would allow visits to further away areas which are accessible by cars and 4x4 vehicles are even better. A list of car rental companies will be provided to you by your hotel or you can arrange for this even before by having your travel agent organize for a pick up at the airport. I would however suggest that you arrange for your vehicle to be waiting for you at your hotel as the traffic in Dubai can be a bit intimidating and after a long flight, traffic stress should be avoided at all costs.

If you have decided to hire a vehicle there is some more information which you need to know about such as conversion of your foreign license, traffic rules and more. The web is a great place to access all the information you need on driving in Dubai including break down services and emergency numbers.

Can You Drive a Rental Car All the Way Around Australia?

Can You Drive a Rental Car All the Way Around Australia?
Are you interested in taking a driving tour around Australia? If you are, then you are in luck because it is very possible. But if you're taking a rental car, you need to take your distance into consideration. Keep in mind that Australia is a large country with plenty to see, so you need to set aside a lot of time and check with the rental car company about the mileage you will be placing on the car.
When you tell the rental car company where you are going, they may object to one of their cars being taken the distance. To drive around Australia, the distance is 20,000km. This means it would take 200 hours of continuous driving to make it all the way around. In other words, it would take 8 days for you to finish your quest, but you would not be able to stop and enjoy the sites if you did this. However, the concern of the rental car company is the distance being placed upon the car. That is a lot of wear and tear. For other car rental companies, they may not care if you're willing to put up the cash for it. If they give you a quote based on factors that include age, whether or not you need insurance, and mileage; the further you go, the more expensive it is going to be.
Sightseeing
Rental car companies also base the amount of the rental off of the amount of time you will have the car. If you are going to sightsee while driving around Australia, it can take up to 40 days to see everything. Then again, it depends on where you're stopping and how long you intend on staying there. It is probably ideal to give yourself about two months to do and see everything that there is to do and see, but you have to make sure that it is okay with the car rental company.
Since many car rental companies do have monthly plans and will allow you to rent for as long as you want without any restrictions, you may not have an issue. Just make sure you cover all of your bases before you drive away with the car. You don't want to come back two months later with an extremely high amount of mileage on the car that the car rental company did not expect. Some of these companies will only rent a car beyond a certain travel distance, and then sell it through their own car lot or through another. So make sure they are not surprised.
The perfect car
When you find the perfect company, you have to find the perfect car. Since you're going to be driving all the way around Australia, you need one that is spacious and comfortable. Many individuals will opt for a van because of the amount of room they consist of. You can store weeks of clothing and other supplies, everyone has enough legroom, and you can even lie down if you need to at some point on the trip. Make sure you talk to the rental car company about a van or another spacious vehicle that you can withstand spending hundreds of hours in for the next couple of months.
So now you know that you can drive a rental car all the way around Australia. It can be quite a fun and rewarding trip. You just need to make sure you do ample planning, make the rental car company aware of your intentions, find the perfect vehicle, and have a lot of fun. You might be quite amazed at how incredible a trip around Australia really is.

The Borromeo Tapestries

Restoration work has been completed on the Borromeo Tapestries, and lucky visitors can see them again in the Palazzo Borromeo on Isola Bella. The tapestries have been reinstalled in the room which has been their home for the past 220 years, the magnificent, Baroque-Lombardy style Salone degli Arazzi.

The tapestries were woven around 1565, in Brussels, probably in the workshop of Pieter Coecke van Aalst. It was 1787 when Cardinal Vitaliano Borromeo acquired them. Their origins previous to this are not known with certitude; one theory is that they were part of a collection owned by Cardinal Mazarino, due to the great similarities they share in form, in border design, and in subject matter. And what subjects... The seven Borromeo panels all share a common background of greenery, forests. Then each, in turn, features a lioness and ducklings; a unicorn, monkey and eagle; a large unicorn tied up; ostiches; another lioness; a tiger; and serpents. The recurrence of the unicorn is not surprising; it is after all the symbol of the Borromeo family. The borders are identical on each piece, and all contain threads of gold and silver woven through with the wool and silk.

Cleaning tapestries of this age and delicacy is no easy task. First dust and the lining are removed. Then, all traces of any previously done, perhaps poor quality, restorations. An aerosol cleaner is next used, and then the tapestry is reformed on a special table where it can dry and breathe. Next, fragile parts are resewn, to strengthen them. And finally, a new lining, of pure linen, is connected to the back of the fabric. And now, clean again, colors flaming, golden threads shining, they are proud and ready to be seen again.

The Salone degli Arazzi is included in the standard tour of the Palazzo Borromeo. Check the Isola Bella tourist homepage here for hours and prices. Private guides are also available. Another way to see the Salone would be to attend one of the Stresa Festival musical events which are held in the room. You can check that schedule here. What an incredible setting this would be for an evening of classical music.

Grazie mille to my colleague at Stresa 2.0 for providing this story.

Finding the Cheapest Car Rental

The company that I work for has a corporate account with Avis. I'm looking to rent a car for two weeks (May 10 - May 24)from the Halifax Airport in Nova Scotia. I'll be paying for the weekend days myself, so I'm looking to get the cheapest rate I can. Is it safe to assume that Avis will be the cheapest car rental company for me, because of the discount code I get for our company's account? I've rented with Enterprise before, but the company I work for does not have a discount for them.

The company discount number that you have will certainly give you a cheaper rate with Avis. I checked the Halifax Airport location for the dates you want to rent... and the discount code will give save you about $200 off the regular Avis rate on a compact car for that two week period. However... I checked the rate for the two week rental, with Enterprise, and even without a discount, the Enterprise rate is over $200 cheaper than the Avis rate with your discount! Enterprise will be your cheapest company, in this case.

Remember, Comparing Car Rental Rates will make sure you get the best rate possible!

Good Luck and hope this helps!

Rent a Truck or Use a Minivan?

I have to move several boxes and a few small pieces of furniture (end tables and a coffee table). I don't want the hassle of having to rent a great big truck. Would it be possible for me to just rent a minivan for a day, take out the back seats and use it? I'm wondering if the car rental companies allow this.

While it would probably seem easier to do this, most car rental companies have policies that do not allow for the removal of the seats in a minivan. For some companies, the seats in a minivan are actually welded or bolted in so that they cannot be removed. Generally, they don't want their passenger vans used as a cargo vehicle. There are some companies that do offer small cargo vans that would suit your needs and you may be able to find a good deal if you do some searching!

Good luck and hope this answers your question!

Villa San Remigio -- The Other Place I Didn't Go

Villa San Remigio

Here's the story of Villa San Remigio, which adjoins the property of the Chiesa di San Remigio in Verbania. While the church is one thousand years old, the villa can only boast a few more than one hundred. But instead, it does have a great love story...

It was the mid 1800s, and the Browne family from Ireland was traveling through Pallanza when their carriage broke down.

Or maybe it was destiny that stopped them in that spot.

Because while waiting for repairs the family discovered the old church on the hill with it's view over the lake, and the Browne daughters convinced their father to purchase the adjoining land.

Jump ahead now to the end of the 1800s. Mr. Browne's granddaughter Sofia has grown up on this property. And she has been in love with her cousin, Silvio Della Valle di Casanova, since they were childhood playmates. They married in 1896. He, a poet and musician, and she, a painter, had a grand vision and a dream for the land, and immediately began putting that dream into action.

From the years of 1910 to 1916 they employed thirty gardeners full time to mold and shape the land to their exacting whims. They terraced the steep hillside, creating levels with different themes. The result is a succession of fantastic spaces, so close to each other, and yet so different. The spaces are intended to evoke certain feelings, certain emotions.

Flights of staircases, paths, and narrow passages lead you through the different environments. The Garden of Hours is a remembrance of their happy childhood. The Garden of Joy, a colorful homage to happiness. There is the Garden of Sadness, shadowy and melancholy, and the Garden of Memories, designed with a sense of nostalgia for the past. And the Garden of Sighs, an area intended to soothe and heal the soul.

This park is the culmination of their combined artistic talents, their masterpiece. Together they chose every statue, every fountain. The motive was to create a space where artistic shapes and natural beauty are one and the same.

And like all artists, they wanted their work to be seen, to be loved by others. As soon as the garden was completed in 1916 they opened the doors to the public. They charged a small admission. And they donated all of the admission fees to charity.

What an incredible amount of creativity and good their passion fueled.

The garden was closed to the public upon Silvio's death in 1929. Silvio and Sofia's daughter donated the property to the province in 1977. The villa, spectacular in its own rite, is used as offices for the Province of Verbania and is available for weddings and private events. The gate was locked when I was there; the garden is open for guided two hour tours in the spring and summer, and I was two weeks too early. The Chiesa di San Remigio still sits next door, much unchanged for almost 1000 years. I almost went inside it also, but that's another story...

Orlando 192

For budget-minded Orlando visitors, US 192 in Kissimmee offers the proximity to Walt Disney World that vacationers are looking for without the higher prices found at the WDW property hotels or the crowds that fill the busy tourist district on International Drive.

Many of the hotels on US 192 include “Gateway” or “Maingate” in the name if they are within five miles of the main entrance to Walt Disney World. At its busiest point close to the Interstate 4 interchange, US 192 runs east-west, so many of these hotels have the distinction of being “Maingate East” or “Maingate West” depending on what side of Walt Disney World the accommodations are located. When booking a hotel in the Orlando 192 area, look for the “Walt Disney World Good Neighbor” label, which means that Disney shuttle services and ticket sales are usually available.

Right off of US 192 just east of I-4 is the town of Celebration, FL, which is a Disney-inspired example of urban planning. With a lively town center and plenty of outdoor cafes and boutique shops, Celebration frequently hosts festivals and other events that draw visitors from across Central Florida as well as tourists who enjoy making a side trip from their Disney vacation.

Chiesa di San Remigio -- The Place I Didn't Go

I was a little bit late, and a little bit lost. I was walking through a section of Verbania that I didn't know, looking for a place I had never been before. In addition, it was all uphill, and the day was hot.

The road I was on came to a dead end at the top of the hill. There was a gate, a clearing, and this old church. I took one quick photo. I didn't try to enter. As I said, I was a little late, and actually a lot lost.

Now, I have stumbled onto information about that old church. And how I regret that I didn't stay longer, look around, go inside. I was at Chiesa di San Remigio, a Romanic style oratory built in the 11th and 12th centuries. Yes. One thousand years ago. The front porch with its arched ceiling is new by comparison; it was added in the 16th century.

Had I ventured inside this is what I would have found. A church built entirely of square stones, all neatly arranged, with two naves of different lengths. It is assumed this is due to the position of the church on the rocky promitory where it sits. Inside I would have found cross vaulting, decorated semi-capitals, and frescoes dating from various ages, beginning with the early medieval era. In the lower apse there are images of Christ blessing a figure kneeling before him. This dates from the mid-eleventh century. And in the higher apse, a series of paintings from the thirteenth century depicts activities carried out in different seasons of the year.

Sigh...

If I had walked in there, not even knowing the age of the building or the paintings, but if I had walked in and discovered this, I would have considered it the luckiest of accidents. And I can't show you what's inside. You, like me, will have to wait until I have the opportunity to find San Remigio again. And I've got to remember, take the extra minute, take the chance, open the door...

The Chiesa di San Remigio sits just next to the grounds of the Villa San Remigio. This beautiful villa today houses the offices of the Province of Verbania, and the gardens are open by appointment only. The villa was built at the beginning of the twentieth century, by two lovers who created their dream garden here. But that is another story...

Chiesa di San Remigio and Villa San Remigio are on via San Remigio which is off of via M.Buonarroti in Verbania.

FYI - Driving Directions From Malpensa to Stresa -- With Photos

Following are driving directions from the exit of Milano Malpensa airport to the center of Stresa. A written version follows the photos, to copy/paste if you like.

Welcome to Malpensa Airport, Milano, and Italy! Got all the luggage packed into the car? Allora, andiamo, let's go! This is what you'll see on the way out of the airport.

After leaving the airport look for this sign and stay right, towards Milano, Varese, and Gravellona.

When the road splits stay right and take this exit, the one with signs for Milano and Varese.

Now follow for Varese/Gravellona. You are looking to stay on the A26.

Now take Genova/Gravellona.

Once you're on the road for Gravellona you'll see this sign for the Autogrill. Now it's time for a little pause. It's not mandatory for you, of course, but it's quite a routine for me to stop there for my first cappuccino.

If you're driving in the morning, how about a classic Italian breakfast of a cappuccino and a brioche? Later in the day, maybe you'll have an espresso.

Refreshed from the cappuccino? Let's get back on the road for Gravellona, exiting in the direction of Gravellona/Arona.

Finally the Alps come into view. That's Monte Rosa slightly to your left, the largest one that you see. It's the second-tallest mountain in western Europe, and the tallest in Switzerland. Can you see the slightly pink hue? The name, however, is from the dialect for Glacier Mountain.

Here's the exit we want, Carpugnino.

When you go around the first big bend on this road, this famous view comes into sight. You're almost there. That's Stresa down below. Now just follow the signs on this road for Stresa as you wind your way down into the city. In a few minutes, you'll be down in the center of town. Now, get out there and enjoy!

Written version without photos:

When leaving the airport follow signs for the A26. The first sign to look for is Milano, Varese, Gravellona. Stay right.

When the road splits, stay right and take the exit for Milano and Varese.

Next, follow the exit for Varese/Gravellona. This one is on your left. You are still looking to stay on the A26.

Next take Genova/Gravellona.

And next, Gravellona/Arona.

You'll see the Alps now. You're getting close.

Take the exit for Carpugnino.

Follow the winding road, always following the signs for Stresa, into the center of town.

The drive from Malpensa to Stresa takes about 40 minutes, under normal conditions. You will encounter three tollbooths on the way; you'll need about 5 euro in total for these tolls, but you can use a credit card as well. There are alternative routes that avoid the tolls, but these are quite local and best not attempted if you are not familiar with the area.

Also, know that unless otherwise posted the speed limit on the motorway is 130 km/hr., and speed is checked electronically, so please do be careful and drive safely.
