Online car hire – Easy and hassle free

Online car hire is the most widely used option both within India and abroad as well. With a hectic work schedule and a busy lifestyle, working people find the online car hire facility convenient as they can make a booking from anywhere, whether it is from office or from home. There are varied options given by car companies with all the possible cars and that too at a reasonable price.

While making a reservation for an online car hire, a person should make sure he provides his personal details, place of pick up, number of passengers, time period for the hire and the exact destination of travel. The payment for an online car hire can be through a debit or a credit card and one can take a printout of the confirmation immediately. There is also an option if one wants to pay locally to the hiring company. This depends on the requirement and convenience of the passengers.

In case anybody is traveling for a long holiday with family, it is always better to choose the option of an online car hire while booking the hotel reservations itself as they can have a fair idea as to how many days they will require the car.

An important factor in case one is choosing the online car hire service is that they have to have clear idea of the terms and conditions of the hiring process. They have to be informed about the process of hiring in case any damage or accident occurs during the hiring period. Only after understanding the terms and conditions, one can make the online payment. So this makes the task of hiring easy and hassle free and travelers can have a peaceful trip whether it is a holiday or a short business trip.

Stresa Festival 2010 Schedule Is Announced

Carnivale degli Animale -- Villa Pallavicino

Last summer I had the great pleasure of learning about the Stresa Festival, and becoming acquainted with a couple of its organizers. I had heard of this yearly musical event, seen the posters around town, but until I met Filippo and Michela, who help to organize it, I was sadly ignorant of its scope and brilliance. Filippo first contacted me through Stresa Sights, I wrote a couple of guest posts for the then new Stresa Festival blog, and posted the schedule here for readers. I then met them in person at Santa Caterina, during the 2009 performance of the Bach solo concertos for Violincello. When I learned the history of the festival, saw the list and the caliber of the performers, and finally heard a performance for myself I knew that this was nothing ordinary... this is a world-class event of truly spectacular proportions, and I urge any of you who will be in Stresa during its 2010 season to make it a part of your vacation. I promise, I promise, you will not be disappointed.

Fisarmoniche in Liberta' -- Villa S. Remigio

The 2010 schedule has just been set. Certain performances, such as the Bach solo, are traditions that will continue this year. Others are new. Goran Bregovic and his Wedding and Funeral Band, soloists from the Berlin Philharmonic, and the Sydney Symphony Orchestra with Vladimir Askenazy are among the highlights of the 49th Edition of the Settimane Musicale di Stresa. Director of the event is Gianandrea Noseda. To start off the season, on 8 May, will be another standard, the Concerti di Primavera, performed at Villa Pallavicino in Stresa, featuring French accordionist Richard Galliano. In the spring weeks that follow, look for the performances by Astor Paizzolla, Chet Baker, and pianist and composer Phillip Glass.

Rags, Riches, and Blues -- Villa Rusconi-Clerici

Throughout the summer, and into September, the performances continue. What makes these so special, in addition to the caliber of the performers, is the variety and beauty of the venues for the performances.

Certainly we'll talk more of the Stresa Festival in these months. For now, I want you to have the information so that you can consider it in your planning. I am posting a link, in the right column of this blog, to the official site where tickets can be purchased. Please try to include this in your stay here... it is bound to become one of your most cherished memories, as it is for me.

Here is the direct link to the 2010 schedule of events and venues:
www.stresafestival.eu/en/festival/festival_2010/programma_2010.html

From that link, please peruse the entire Stresa Festival site. There are wonderful photos, videos, and links to whet your appetite... I hope these photos here are a good appetizer...

Orlando International Airport

Passenger traffic continued to rebound at Orlando International Airport in November, with totals up 2.5 percent over November 2008.

Figures released this week by the Greater Orlando Aviation Authority show 2.64 million people got on or off of planes at Orlando International in November, compared with 2.58 million people in the previous November. It was the third-consecutive month passenger traffic showed gains over the previous year, following 15 straight months of decline.
In November the domestic traffic was up 1 percent, while international traffic was up 17 percent.

For the year, traffic remains about 6 percent behind the overall 2008 pace.
Orlando International spokeswoman Carolyn Fennell expressed cautious optimism about what she said "appears to be a stablization of traffic activity." But she said a number of factors ranging from oil prices to passenger confidence will determine whether the trend continues.

Maitland-based aviation consultant Michael Miller, president of Miller Air Group, was more optimistic, noting that nationally many airlines and airports are seeing improved business. Some airports, notably Las Vegas, remain down, and he noted that the improvements seen at other airports, including Orlando, are improvements over what was a weak 2008. But he said indications show that business travel is picking up.

"It's a foregone conclusion that the (airline) industry is in recovery," Miller said.

Oneway Convertible or Sports Car Rental

I am interested in a one way rental from Tulsa, Ok to Las Vegas. I would like a convertible possibly mustang or sports car. Are such rentals available? I am planning a trip pickup 5/22/10 and drop off 5/30/10. Thanks for your help.

I would guess that finding a oneway convertible or sportscar rental would be difficult.

I checked Alamo, Avis, Budget, Dollar, Enterprise, Hertz, National and Thrifty for the cities and dates and times you mentioned.

Enterprise had no oneway rentals available at all, and although Alamo, Avis, Budget, Dollar, Hertz, National and Thrifty all allowed a one way rental (with compact, midsize, fullsize cars and SUVs), none allowed any oneway rentals with convertibles nor sportscars.

Hope this answers your question. Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

Cypress Gardens to become Legoland Florida

After closing yet again in 2009, Cypress Gardens in Winter Haven is now under new ownership and is slated to become Legoland Florida by the end of 2011. Earlier this year the Merlin Entertainments Group purchased the land lease and development rights to Cypress Gardens as well as the botanical gardens and adjoining Splash Island waterpark.

The British-based Merlin is the second busiest amusement company in the world, and it is part of the Blackstone Group that purchased the SeaWorld parks and entertainment last year and also co-owns Universal Studios in Orlando. Merlin’s holdings include Madame Tussaud's wax museums and the London Eye. The new owners have a history of successful theme park operations, including Legoland theme parks in Europe and California. The proposed Legoland Florida theme park will be the only Legoland in North America east of the Mississippi River--a similar set up to how Disney and Universal have established their American theme parks.

Merlin has indicated that the company will preserve a 30-acre section of Cypress Gardens' botanical gardens, so at least a small legacy of one of Old Florida's original theme parks will remain.

Cypress Gardens opened in Winter Haven, Florida in 1936 and was one of Central Florida’s premier attractions before Walt Disney World opened and forever changed the destiny of the region in 1971. The Southern Belles in hoop skirts, botanical gardens and water-ski shows have long been associated with Cypress Gardens, although in recent years the park has tried to compete with the Orlando attractions with additional thrill rides.

Solar-Powered Conventions

The Orange County Convention Center has adopted sustainable practices across many functional areas of the facility, and became nationally recognized for its initiatives. In 2007, it was the first U.S. convention center to be ISO 14001:2004-certified for its recycling program.

However, the center’s greatest innovation recycles one of Orlando’s most prized assets – the sun. The center was awarded a $1.8 million grant from the State of Florida to develop a one-megawatt rooftop photovoltaic (PV) system. The project will generate electricity by collecting solar energy and is expected to produce enough juice to power 100 average-size-homes. The system was plugged in during May 2009.

Eco-Friendly Orlando

Orlando continues its green evolution with more than 125 area convention hotels and resorts having been admitted into the Florida Green Lodging Program by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP). In fact, nearly all of Orlando’s meeting and convention hotels have received this certification.

To achieve this recognition, the facilities must follow eco-friendly practices, participate in linen reuse programs, use energy efficient thermostats and implement waste reduction programs, among the requirements. A comprehensive list of Orlando green-certified hotels and resorts can be found at dep.state.fl.us/greenlodging/lodges.htm.

Many of the destination’s theme parks, attractions, golf courses and restaurants, as well as the Orange County Convention Center, have also adopted sustainable practices into their daily operations.

In the wake of the devastating 7.0 magnitude earthquake that struck Haiti on January 12, Orlando hotelier Harris Rosen, President and COO of Rosen Hotels & Resorts, announced a comprehensive and long-term relief effort to raise at least $1 million in donations as well as to collect first aid, medical and hygiene supplies to assist the earthquake victims in Haiti. Rosen jump-started the fundraising campaign with a personal donation of $250,000 and is seeking assistance from local companies, vendors, churches, Rosen Hotels & Resorts’ associates and individuals in the Orlando community to raise the balance.

Relief donations will be channeled through the Harris Rosen Foundation, which has managed the hotelier’s multi-million philanthropic endeavors for more than 15 years. One hundred percent of donations received through the Harris Rosen Foundation will be used for relief efforts in Haiti.

Supplies may be dropped off at Rosen Centre hotel, 9840 International Dr., Orlando, FL 32819 or at First Haitian Baptist Church of Orlando, 4701 Lenox Boulevard, Orlando, FL 32811 or at the Child development Center of Orlando, 11553 Winter Garden Vineland Rd., Orlando, FL 32836. Special Paperwork for Border Crossing with Rental Car

I am a US citizen and am planning a trip to Calgary CA and want to rent a car (unlimited mileage) which I will drive in Canada and also in the USA in Montana and Idaho. The car will be returned to Calgary. Is there any special paperwork required, particularily for the 2 border crossings?

All you will need to rent the car (assuming you meet the minimum age requirement) is a valid drivers license, and a major credit card in your own name.

You will need to show the rental contract at the border crossings, as well as your drivers license and passport.

To my knowledge, there is no other paperwork from the car rental company itself, that you would need to show at the border (as long as you have their permission to take the car out of the country), but this could depend on which company you rent from.

You will need to let the car rental company know that you wish to take the car out of the province and out of the country (this can affect mileage restrictions) to find out if there are any geographic restrictions or additional forms for that particular car rental company.

I hope this helps.

Hotel Belvedere, Isola Pescatori -- Travelers' Choice Winner!

Walk up the stairs on the left to reach the terrace of Hotel Belvedere from the beach.

I spent some time wandering, on a very warm spring day last year , around tiny Isola Pescatore. When I stopped for lunch I chose to have it at the restaurant at the Hotel Belvedere. Sitting on the terrace, with the sun warming my skin, watching boats large and small cruise past, I thought to myself that this was a special little corner of the world. And although just a tiny corner, it seems that it has come to the attention of many others as well. Tiny Albergo Ristorante Belvedere, with only eight rooms, was recently chosen by Tripadvisor readers as one of the ten most romantic hotels in Europe. Wow.

The terrace is large, but well hidden from the rest of the island, and oh so quiet.

From March through November Isola Pescatori can be somewhat crowded with tourists. But the Belvedere, located on the northeastern side, is on the opposite side of the island from the landing dock, and therefore quieter. That's why I chose it for my lunch spot. The gravel terrace has enough tables and umbrellas for 200, and the restaurant inside seats the same amount. The menu is a nice selection of fresh local fish, cheese made in the Ossala valley, Piemontese wines, even the rice is from a local producer. The carefully tended garden surrounding the terrace had bowers of climbing plants that were only starting to open when I was there. Imagine how they are blooming by the middle of the summer.

From the beach and terrace, always a view of Isola Madre.

I walked through the indoor restaurant. It often hosts banquests and wedding receptions. Old photographs show that at one time the walls were covered completely in small stones, but a renovation in 2004 covered them. The eight guest rooms were also renovated at that time. Six of the rooms have large balconies that look out towards Isola Madre. All the rooms have en suite baths, some with hydromassage tubs, and all have their own heating and air conditioning systems.

And the view from the room is pretty special also...

The tourist boats do not run all night to the island; in fact they stop around dinner time even in the high season. Therefore, the crowds of the day leave. The island takes on a different persona then, with only its 50 full-time residents and a handful of guests. It becomes still, peaceful, and quiet. Guests who want to come for dinner at one of the restaurants need to make private arrangements with a water taxi. Guests staying at the hotel can stroll, listen to the water, watch the lights twinkling in Stresa and Baveno. It does sound romantic, doesn't it?

Before the game, the players will visit patients at the Shriners Hospital in Tampa.

Stresa On Video

Here are two videos of Stresa to enjoy...

I recently came across the first, which is a video advert for Stresa -- from a Japanese TV station! I can't even be sure who made the video, but it's well-made, and it's nice to see that Stresa is known and promoted as a destination. They emphasize food a lot in the video, which I like to see. If anyone reading this knows what it says, please feel free to share it with us!

The second video was produced by one of the local tourism bureaus. From a helicopter you get a nice overview of the lungolago, some of the villas in Stresa, and then a fly-by of Isola Bella and Isola Pescatore. Enjoy them both!

Capitalizing On History

Orlando has a rich history of tourism and travel that goes all the way back to the late-nineteenth century when northerners traveled to the area for the exceptional weather and beautiful natural resources. Hoteliers began to see the benefit of the region’s climate and opened hotels aimed at attracting visitors, and by 1950 tourism replaced agriculture as Florida’s principal industry.

Entrepreneurs recognized the new opportunity and created interesting and sometimes odd new attractions for visitors. Dick Pope opened Cypress Gardens to visitors in 1936 and it is known as “Florida’s First Theme Park.” In 1949, Owen Godwin, Sr. opened his Snake Village and Alligator Farm. Later Godwin would rename the park Gatorland and it continues to fascinate and educate visitors to this day.

The landscape of tourism in Orlando and Florida would change forever when in 1964. Walt Disney began purchasing more than 25,000 acres of land next to the newly completed interstate 4 just east of Orlando. Seven years later in 1971 the Walt Disney World Resort’s Magic Kingdom Park opened its gates.

Throughout the next two decades, Orlando’s tourism industry began to expand at a tremendous pace with SeaWorld Orlando opening in 1972; the first-ever water park, Wet n Wild in 1977; Epcot in 1982; Disney MGM Studios (now Disney’s Hollywood Studios) in 1989; and Universal Studios Florida in 1990.

Today Orlando is home to seven of the top 10 theme parks in the country, four of the most-visited water parks and the second largest convention center in the United States.

Best Car Rental Rate in Hawaii

I will be going to Kauai in Junr for two to three weeks and will need a car for a week and then a minivan for the next couple. Any advice on what to do to get the best rate?

Car rental prices vary from company to company, city to city and date to date. They're always changing!

You need to compare rental cars, rental car companies and rental car rates to make sure that you get the best deal available.

Here are the steps I recommend:

1. Compare multiple companies

If you have the time, check rates from 4 or 5 companies to compare their prices. Make sure to check totals for you proposed rental.. not just the per day rate. (companies have different fees for additional drivers, special equipment, insurance (if you wanted it), etc). Check for mileage restrictions -- unlimited mileage rates are usually a better deal)

2. Check for discount codes, coupons and specials

Check prices with and without discount codes that you may have.
Check your local newspaper and yellow pages for coupons. If you have an Entertainment book, you will probably have coupons for several companies.
Check sites like Hotwire for last minute deals for certain cities.

3. Compare rates from booking sites (travelocity, kayak, rental car momma, etc.) as well as rates from the rental car company websites directly.

4.Book as far in advance as you can, and continue to check back, if possible to see if the rates go down closer to the rental day... if so.. rebook!

If you do these things you can be confident that you have probably gotten the best deal available!

Fil da Fer

Fil da Fer served hot at Ristorante Casa della Neve atop Mt. Mottarone.

The winters are long and cold in the mountains of the Italian Alps of Piemonte. The highest mountain in the Alps, Mont Blanc, is near the Italian-French border, and the second highest, Monte Rosa, straddles the Swiss-Italian, not far at all from Stresa. Its peak is clearly visible as we drive into Stresa from Milan, it dominates the view to the north from Mt. Mottarone, and even from Lago Maggiore and the Borromean Islands I can see Monte Rosa. The point is, it's cold up in all those mountains. The people living on Monte Rosa long ago concocted a liquore to help warm the long winter days and nights. The legend has it that it was during a prolonged and brutal blizzard which they passed safely in a shelter stored with foods. They combined their simple mountain distilled whiskey with some of the supplies, and a drink was invented. They called it fildafer. It is a Piemontese dialect word which means threads of iron. Imagine red-hot iron down your throat. That would warm you up...

Today Fil da Fer is produced by the Distilleria Monterosa, using the same ingredients of old. The drink is a mixture of whisky rye, milk, sugar, egg yolks, marsala, and just a hint of vanilla. It can be drank at room temperature, but most often it is heated; now it warms you in two ways. The slightly thick, bright orange liquore is packaged by Distilleria Monterosa in attractive bottles and flasks, making it a nice gift from the region. But the better way to try it is atop Mt. Mottarone, at one of the ski-lodge-type restaurants found there, sitting in front of a fireplace and looking out the windows at the skiers and the snow.

Ristorante Casa della Neve.

I had my first taste in this way, at Ristorante Casa della Neve. This is one of a few rustic looking restaurants that can be found at the summit of Mt. Mottarone. The back of the restaurant has expansive views of Lago Maggiore far below. The front entrance has an 'undressing' area, with large hooks along the walls, useful for the skiers in winter and the mountain bikers in summer. In the center is a stone fireplace, surrounded by a few couches; they are close enough to the fire to really feel the heat. My fildafer was served hot, in a small glass cup with a metal handle. The drink was warm and slightly sweet. The fire was crackling and hot. Outside the snow was white and the sky crisp and clear all the way to Milano. Those early mountain men really knew how to brighten a cold winter day.

Here's the spot to drink your fil da fer.

Even if you are not a fan of skiing or snowboarding Mt. Mottarone is interesting to visit in the winter. Dress warm, sit by the fire, read a book, drink fildafer, while you wait for your skiing friends to join you. Read more about Mt. Mottarone in the winter in these posts:

Rental Car Coverage through my Family's Auto Insurance?

I do not own a car so I do not have car insurance.

I will be renting a car for 2 weeks. If I add my name on my family's car insurance policy as an additional driver, will I be covered when driving the rental car?

The answer really depends on the automobile insurance and the type of policy that your family currently has.

The policy holder that would have to add you to the policy, should contact their insurance agent to determine, first, if their policy covers rental car insurance coverage -- and - most importantly - if (or by how much) this coverage extends to any additional drivers listed on the policy.

Make sure to have them check for public liability coverage amounts, property damage amounts as well as if the coverage extends to collison or loss of the rental vehcile itself (and, if so, how much coverage? ie. is it limited to the amount of coverage that is carried on their personal vehicle, or would it cover more if the rental car damage was in excess of that amount?) They may also want to check if the coverage covers loss of use of the rental car, if in an accident, and any administrative fees. They should also find out if they would have to pay their normal deductible, should something happen to the rental car, and how it would affect their premiums, should you have an accident.

I hope this helps!

Who Loves Stresa?

[isoleborromee.jpg]

Well, I do! And if you're here maybe you do too, and it seems, as we know now from a recently published book, that throughout history many have found this region to be worthy of special praise. "Dove comincia la bella Italia"; that is the name of the 247-page book recently published by the Lions Club of Verbano Borromeo. Here within are gathered together the words and stories of painters, writers, artists, politicians, and other well-known personalities who visited, and left their words, paintings, and statues about the area. It focuses on Lago Maggiore, Lago Orta, and the Valle Ossolane, and more precisely, the area which includes Stresa and the Borromean islands. For example, Gustave Flaubert called Isola Madre "an earthly Paradise... It is the most luscious place that I have ever seen". Agreeing with him on this were the composers Felix Mendelssohn and Franz Liszt. Maybe that is one reason that today the Stresa Festivale Musicale each year inspires musicians and music lovers alike...

Writers from around the world and throughout history have found the islands to be truly exceptional places. From Denmark's Hans Christian Andersen to England's Charles Dickens, to Germany's Wilhelm Richard Wagner, and France's Alexandre Dumas, author of The Three Musketeers. Then there were the Russian author Nikolai Gogol and Frankenstein authoress Mary Shelley, and don't forget Ernest Hemingway, of whom we have already spoken.

Among the first painters who painted the islands was the Flemish painter Bruegel, who visited in the 16th century, then Corot, who painted several views, and one of my favorite stories, the Dutch master Muller, who was sentenced to die for having murdered his wife, but was saved from this fate by the Borromees, who hid him on Isola Bella. In exchange, he painted 70 paintings for them. Certainly he loved Stresa...

Who else? There were Napolean and Josephone, also guests at the palace, Giuseppe Garibaldi, who came often. Dumas loved Mottarone. And Nietzsche and his love Lou Salome' shared their first kiss in front of Lago Orta.

Aren't we in good company with our affections for this beautiful lake and her islands?

Friends Of Stresa Sights

S.V. Date first wrote to me with some questions about his hotel reservation for New Year's Eve in Stresa. We assisted him with his concerns, and he and his family have reported back that they had a lovely time here in Stresa, and at Hotel Mon Toc. The photo he has sent is of his family atop Mt. Mottarone, where his sons experienced their first-ever encounter with snow. The Date family is in the middle of quite an adventure... take a look at their blog, Juno's Journey, at www.junoatsea.blogspot.com, and read all about their two-year boat journey around the world.

It's been a pleasure being able to assist the Date family in Stresa!

Disney Marathon FREEZE

The half marathon on Friday night/Saturday morning promises to be cold. Here's the Kissimmee forecast, which should approximate the weather at WDW:
Low: 33°F RealFeel®: 26°F
Mostly cloudy and colder with showers

... leading to a Saturday of:
High: 44°F RealFeel®: 32°F
A bit of rain and sleet in the morning; otherwise, cloudy, breezy and colder. It appears likely to rain at 8am, when the temp should be 36 degrees (no snow).

Then, Saturday night, when the full marathon folks wake up and stand around the epcot parking lot:
Low: 26°F RealFeel®: 11°F
Clear and colder; breezy late; watch for a hard freeze

Um, ouch. The rest of Sunday says:
High: 50°F RealFeel®: 41°F
Windy and very cold with times of clouds and sun

Good running weather, on the one hand. I will be volunteering and thus standing around. Pity me, instead!! :)

Ch-Ch-Changes

Let's see, 2010 is all of seven days old, and WDW has already done numerous things.

Additions: fast food pizza under construction in Epcot's Italy pavilion, Muppet pre-parade float at MK.

Deletions: Tiana's Showboat Jubilee, Prince Caspian at DHS (on Jan 11), Mexico fast food (the building will be torn down and replaced), Picnic in the Park dining concept at DAK.

L'Epifania -- The Procession Of The Three Kings

[Re+Magi++Stresa.jpeg]
Three Kings make their annual procession through Stresa.

With la Festa dell'Epifania, on January 6, Italy marks the end of its long holiday season. Children all over Italy wait on Epifania Eve on January 5 to see what la Befana, the witch woman, will leave for them in their hanging stockings. Will it be little toys and candies, or, have they been naughty and therefore receiving only a lump of coal? Her name, Befana, is most likely a corruption of Epifania, and the legend is that la Befana was busy sweeping her house when the three Wise Men stopped on their journey to visit the baby Jesus in Bethlehem. She was invited to go also, but, too busy with her sweeping, she did not. Later, when her work was finished, she took her broom and went looking for them, but became lost. And so, to this day, she still searches for them on each Epifania Eve.

Stresa's children also will wake on L'Epifania and check their stockings to see what the Befana has left. But then, they may head outside to witness Stresa's own Epifania tradition, the annual March of the Three Wise Kings. Years ago, this festival was held in the village of Vedasco, in the hills above Stresa, at a small church. But for logistical reasons, such as the always growing number of people who wanted to attend the event, and for the always unknown factor of how the weather will be, it now takes place in Stresa's center.

The return to the year zero of the Christian era begins at 12:30, in Piazza Cadorna. Before the procession of the Kings begins, Stresiani and visitors are treated to warm traditional foods served from tables set up in the piazza. Polenta "concia" is served, as well as polenta with wild boar, and tripe. At 2 pm, small shops, more like market stands, open, with craftspeople representing the old trades of the time. And then, at 3:30, the procession begins. They leave from the Palazzo dei congressi, Joseph and Mary, the angels, the shepards, and the chimney sweeps. The Three Kings are stationed along the route: Gaspare at the Palazzo dei congressi, Baldassarre at the little piazza San Michele, and Melchiore on via Anna Maria Bolongaro. At 4 pm they reunite, meeting at the 'Court of Herod', now represented by the staircase at Villa Ducale on the lungolago. From here, the entire procession moves to the 'grotto', arranged as always in the park of Villa Ducale. Here, they find the manger, and bestoy their gifts upon, Bambino Gesu, the baby Jesus.

Stresa is rightly proud of its annual procession of the Three Wise Kings, and of the live presepe. If you happen to be here at this time, be sure to enjoy the festa dell'Epifania and follow along with them.

Many Happy Returns ‘Give a Day, Get a Disney Day’ Anchors a Year of New Beginnings

With a turn of the calendar comes a twist to the celebrating: In 2010, Disney Parks will join in the celebration, saluting those guests who devote their hearts and hands to make their communities better places.

One million people who perform volunteer service for a participating organization in 2010 will receive a free one-day admission ticket to a Walt Disney World Resort or Disneyland Resort theme park.

The program, called “Give a Day, Get a Disney Day,” anchors a year when ground will be broken on the largest expansion in Magic Kingdom history, Disney sports becomes more invigorating than ever, Disney Cruise Line introduces new entertainment and activities, and Walt Disney World theme parks and Downtown Disney present 2010 editions of popular festivals and events.

Here’s a brief look …
“Give a Day, Get a Disney Day” (beginning Jan. 1) – Disney hopes to inspire families to volunteer in their communities during 2010 through this first-of-its-kind program that “rewards” volunteer service with admission for a day to a Disney theme park. To enable people to sign up for an eligible volunteer project, Disney is working with HandsOn Network, the nation’s largest volunteer network. Starting Jan. 1, 2010, guests can go to www.DisneyParks.com for the United States and Puerto Rico or www.DisneyParks.ca for Canada to search for volunteer opportunities available in those areas through HandsOn Network and sign up for a day of volunteer service. Many of the opportunities will be for projects that entire families with children age 6 or older can participate in together.

Disney’s Honorary VoluntEARS Cavalcade (beginning Jan. 8) – Each afternoon just before the daily parade at Walt Disney World Magic Kingdom (and at Disneyland Park in California), Muppets characters and parade dancers will join special floats and vehicles celebrating volunteerism and presenting Honorary VoluntEARS serving as Grand Marshals of the parades. Kermit, Miss Piggy and Sweetums will be part of the merriment, while the dancers will be donning outfits that celebrate the work of volunteers.

Fantasyland expansion – An early-2010 groundbreaking will mark the beginning of a three-year construction project that will result in a vastly expanded Magic Kingdom Fantasyland. When the project is completed (tentative timetable is 2013), guests will be able to:
visit a Disney princess in her castle, cottage or chateau to share a dance with Cinderella; celebrate Sleeping Beauty’s birthday with the Good Fairies; or join Belle in an enchanting story performance in the Beast’s castle library.

“Be Our Guest” and dine in one of three enchanted rooms inside the Beast’s castle.
Fly with Dumbo high above brand-new circus grounds, twice the size of the existing attraction with a new interactive, three-ring circus tent.

Journey under the sea with Ariel, the Little Mermaid, in her very own attraction.
ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex relaunch (February 2010) – A re-imagining project involving ESPN and the Disney sports complex, the leading multi-sport venue in the nation, aims to create immersive and entertaining sports experiences for athletes, coaches and fans by incorporating signature elements of ESPN in ways that will connect athletes and coaches with their favorite ESPN programs, personalities and elements. Guests will discover a new welcome center, a digital center where video captured by 44 cameras across the 220-acre sports campus is edited for display on 40 video screens and two “jumbotrons” throughout the complex as part of a veritable “Wide World of SportsCenter,” and the new ESPN Wide World of Sports Grill. Meanwhile, behind the scenes, technical staff will continue work in the Innovation Lab to develop ground-breaking ESPN on-air products – using the action throughout the complex as a real-world testing environment.

Disney Cruise Line Castaway Cay enhancements (by summer 2010) – Castaway Cay, Disney Cruise Line’s private island paradise in the tropical waters of the Bahamas, is getting an extra dose of pixie dust – providing guests with more water-based family-fun, additional conveniences and a slice of beachside luxury all designed to complement the idyllic island setting. Here’s a snapshot of what’s in store:

Guests can slide and splash at a new water feature called Pelican Plunge, a 2,400-square-foot floating platform located within swimming distance from shore and featuring an enclosed corkscrew waterslide, a 140-foot-long open waterslide, a giant water-filled “bucket dump” and four water cannons.

A brand-new, 2,400-square-foot water play area called Spring-a-Leak helps guests cool off while immersing them in what appears to be the remnants of a washed-away beach dwelling. The watery fun begins as guests enter the storm-ravaged structure, greeted by dripping pipes, broken plumbing and hissing misters, exposed and twisted by the tropical tempest that wiped out the original structure.

Disney Cruise Line European Season Port Adventures (summer 2010) – To help families better explore the culture and wonder of Europe, Disney Cruise Line is working closely with local tour operators to create family-friendly Port Adventures for 10- and 11-night Mediterranean voyages and 12-night Northern Europe cruises in summer 2010. Developed specifically for Disney Cruise Line guests, these adventures feature Disney touches designed to entertain and inspire both children and adults while providing an impeccable level of guest service that pays close attention to the special travel needs of families. While every port of call will offer Port Adventures for families to enjoy together, many tours integrate separate activities for children and adults. While kids are engaged in age-appropriate activities supervised by youth counselors from the ship, parents are given the opportunity to explore cultural sites and points of interest in greater depth. Examples, depending on voyage:
