NHTSA to Investigate Rental Car Recall Repairs

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has launched an investigation to determine how quickly car rental companies fix recalled vehicles.

NHTSA said it will review nearly 3 million vehicles manufactured by General Motors, Chrysler and Ford that were sold to car rental companies. The agency said the investigation will give "an indication of how completely and how quickly rental car fleets, in general or individually, perform necessary recall-related repairs or other remedies on the vehicles owned and then leased for use on the roadways."

NHTSA said the investigation was prompted by "allegations of personal injury and death claimed to have been caused by safety defects and failures to conform to minimum Federal Motor Vehicles Safety Standards on rental car vehicles..." NHTSA also noted a petition was filed with the Federal Trade Commission to stop one car rental company from renting unrepaired recalled vehicles.

The Center for Car Safety and Consumers for Auto Reliability and Safety filed that petition with the FTC in August to stop Enterprise and its parent company from renting out unrepaired recalled vehicles to customers.

The FTC petition followed a lawsuit filed by Chuck and Carol Houck against Enterprise Rent-A-Car after the 2004 deaths of their daughters, Raechel and Jacqueline.

The two women rented a Chrysler PT Cruiser from Enterprise in California. The vehicle was recalled by the manufacturer for a power steering hose defect that was known to cause an underhood fire, but was never repaired.

The two women were unaware of the safety recall. They died in a head-on traffic collision with an 18-wheeler on the 101 north highway near King City, Calif., on Oct. 2, 2004.

A jury awarded their parents $15 million on June 9, 2010 in a lawsuit against Enterprise Rent A Car.

Enterprise spokeswoman Laura Bryant told the Detroit News the company would cooperate with NHTSA in any inquiry involving current practices.

"If and when manufacturers recommend that vehicle owners park or ground their vehicles, Enterprise promptly does so," she said. "In most cases, we place a 'hold' on recalled vehicles so they are not rented until the recall work is completed."

No federal law requires rental car companies to fix vehicles before they return to service, Sharon Faulkner, executive director of the American Car Rental Association, told the Detroit News. Most companies quickly repair vehicles once they get a notice, she said.

"You pull those cars and you park them," Faulkner said. "It's just foolish for anyone to risk a lawsuit, death or injury.

"It can be months before a recall notice gets to a rental company," she said, adding that automakers could work to better notify companies.

Imagination!

Hmmm. This stinks!

Winter: The Grand Presepe Of Giuseppe Loda

So, now that I've got my winter coat and hat, I'm in the mood to stay on the subject of winter in Stresa for a while and talk about some other aspects of it here. First of all, let's speak about the presepe exhibit, because this year there is a big change of venue.

Following the overwhelming success of last year, when it was displayed in Spazio Luparia, the mechanical and wondrous presepe made by Giuseppe Loda will be moved to a larger space this year. Hotel Milano, in Corso Umberto I on the Lungolago is the location that has been chosen. Here, the presepe, the largest on display anywhere in the VCO region, will be more visible and accessible.

This presepe is incredible. It is 12 meters in length, 4 wide; it has over 100 figurines, as well as huts, houses, castles, and animals, and all have been made by hand by Signor Loda. Most have small motors that he has installed, to give constant movement and action to the scene.

Last year I wrote a bit about the history of this extraordinary presepe and its creator. I'm copying that here again for you to know:

Giuseppe Loda made his first terracotta house when he was 8 years old. He baked it in his grandfather Paolo's kiln. Now, Loda creates nativity scenes of truly spectacular size. His latest work is over 12 meters in length, 4 meters in depth, and features over 100 statues. It is on display in Stresa in Spazio Luparia, an always fascinating little gallery located on Via Bolongaro, just off of the new Piazza Pozzi.

Loda spends an entire year working on each of the enormous presepi. He creates each piece, no matter how minute, by hand and by himself. Loda explains, "I construct all myself, the houses, the vegetation. See those houses in the Arabic style on the hill? I constructed them and also the palms. It is meant to be a homage to the immigrants of the Muslim faith. The lights that shine through the windows of those houses are the types used in their religion." There is also a homage to Stresa in this presepe; don't miss the reproduction of the little train which ran at one time to the summit of Mt. Mottarone.

As Loda learned the art of ceramics and nativity building from his 'nonno Paolo', he is hoping that the passion will again skip a generation and be picked up by his grandson, Eduardo. "To my own two sons I didn't succeed to pass it on," he says. Let's hope that six-year-old Eduardo shows an interest, as talent such as this would be a shame to lose.

Here are the dates that the presepe will be open for viewing:

In December: 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 18, 19, 25, 26
In January: 1, 2, 6, 7, 8, 9

Can't be there? Want to enjoy a preview? Here's a video made last year at Spazio Luparia.

And read about more winter happenings in Stresa here.

Winter: Alpyland In The Snow

Here's some beautiful proof that winter has indeed arrived, at least in the mountains above Stresa. I share with you here some photos taken at Alpyland on a crisp and clear day, from the starting platform of the toboggan run. Alpyland will be a four-season attraction, and you may recall from our earlier posts about it, it is safe for children of almost any age. Its speed range is from very slow to moderately fast, and small children can be strapped in with an adult behind them. Basically it works by releasing a brake. That is, you release the brake to the speed you want. Removing your hands will automatically brake the tobaggan.

Not bad these views, no? Here's a refresher on some of the important information to remember about Mt. Mottarone and Alpyland in the winter. Alpyland sits at the very summit of Mt. Mottarone. Remember that to reach it from Stresa you'll take the cableway up from the Carciano ferry stop, and then at the top of the cableway you will walk a few meters and take the chairlift to the summit and Alpyland. You can also arrive by auto, on a toll road that winds up the mountain. Parking is on the other side of the summit. From that point one must walk up the hill to the summit antenna and over the top to Alpyland. On the parking side you will find the few restaurants, such a Casa delle Neve, and the starting points for the ski runs of Mottarone. It is up here that skis and equipment can be rented.

Although Mottarone is a large enough mountain, and has some very nice skiing, this is not a large resort. Keep that in mind. You will not find here the amenities or the variety that exists at larger, more touristic places. What you will find here is a good-size local resort used by many traveling from Milan for a day on the mountain, and for some looking for a more laid back winter experience. There are lessons available however, by instructors who speak English, and there are lessons as well for children. And often, you'll see Motty, the mascot of Mottarone, skiing along with you.

So are you ready for winter 2010/2011 in Stresa? Stresa's ready and waiting for you...
Here are some other posts about winter.

Read the previous blog for more about Mt. Mottarone's 2010/2011 winter season and links to the websites for Mt. Mottarone and Alpyland.

At long last Florida residents and vacationers have an excuse to put on a sweater, long pants and leave those flip flops at home, as the Gaylord Palms Resort and Convention Center brings back ICE! now through January 2. ICE! Has become a cherished tradition in the Orlando area, where visitors can marvel at life-size ice sculptures in a 14,000 temperature controlled area set to a very frosty 9 degree. Bright blue oversized parkas are provided, but seriously, leave those shorts and flip flops at home.

Tickets can be purchased online, at Gaylord Palms, or in conjunction with one of the many special holiday packages that are available through the resort, including the Best of Florida Christmas Package, Christmas Memories at Gaylord Palms Package and Grandparents Getaway. This year's presentation involves an icy twist on the classic story, Twas the Night Before Christmas.

In addition to the dazzling display, there will be plenty of photo opportunities, Christmas gifts, and even a chance to enjoy a cup of hot cocoa in the Gaylord Palms' spacious atrium. There are even a couple of solid ice slides that children can enjoy--it's probably the only place in Florida where kids can go sledding. Buy tickets in advance to avoid long lines; for many visitors and locals ICE! is the highlight of Orlando's holiday season.

Bills Target Alleged Auto Rental Geographic Discrimination

Two New York lawmakers want to stop car rental companies from charging higher rates to residents living in certain boroughs of the state, according to the New York Post.

Two car rental companies out of 11 that do business in the five boroughs - Thrifty and Dollar - charge Brooklyn, Queens and Bronx residents an additional fee based on their residence. Brooklyn residents pay an additional $55 daily to rent from either of those companies, Bronx residents pay $53 per day, and residents of Queens pay $11 each day. Those figures come from a survey from Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer, state Sen. Daniel Squadron and Assemblyman Brian Kavanagh.

Staten Island and Manhattan residents are not subject to any extra fee.

Claiming geographic discrimination, the two lawmakers and Stringer say the car rental companies are taking advantage of consumers and penalizing those who live beyond Manhattan.

State bills that Squadron and Kavanagh are sponsoring would make it unlawful for car rental companies to charge customers more based on where they live. A similar bill stalled in committee last year. Squadron and Kavanagh's bills are set to be introduced soon.

Thrifty and Dollar charge the additional fee for consumers renting in New York state, Newark, N.J. or Philadelphia. The fee applies regardless of where the customer intends to drive the rental car.

Etihad on course for 2012 profit

Etihad Airways is on course to make its first profit in 2012, according to a statement from chief executive James Hogan.

The airline – which celebrated only it seventh birthday earlier this month – is on course to report profitable earnings before interest, taxation, depreciation, amortisation and rentals (EBITDAR) for 2010, with break even expected in 2011, Mr Hogan added.

The Etihad chief executive was speaking at a financial road-show event in London, attended by more than 170 representatives of banks and other financial institutions.

At the road-show – which forms part of the airline’s regular interactions with the international financial community - Etihad laid out its business strategy for the future as well as expanding on its commercial performance since it was established.

Mr Hogan explained: “With only a month to go, we are well on track for profitable EBITDAR for 2010, marking an important milestone in the commercial development of the airline.

“Our next goal is full break-even in 2011, leading to sustainable profitability from 2012 onwards.

“All our indicators show that these targets are in our sights.”

Etihad was recently recognised as the World’s Leading Airline for the second consecutive year by the prestigious World Travel Awards.

“The growth of Abu Dhabi as a global destination is playing a critical role in our development,” continued Mr Hogan.

“The government’s investment in tourism infrastructure, in hotels and attractions, and in the business environment is really paying dividends.

“Etihad is an airline with ambitious plans for the future. But all of those plans are grounded in solid commercial foundations.

“Our shareholder expects a return and we will deliver that return.”

Etihad’s financial road-shows are part of the airline’s commercial fund-raising program, largely in support of its aircraft financing.

The majority of the financing for the airline’s fleet is raised on the commercial markets and Etihad regularly updates the financial community on the performance of the business.

Credit Guarantees

The formerly arcane topic of aircraft financing has been in the headlines recently, with the Aviation Alliance yesterday calling on all governments to offer assistance to carriers, regardless of where they are based.

Etihad has come in for criticism from some quarters, with European airlines in particular criticising the carrier for its perceived links to government.

Mr Hogan, however, stated the opposition argued.

He continued: “There has been recent interest in the issue of export credit guarantees but for Etihad, this has always been only a small element of our aircraft financing strategy.

“The large majority of our financing comes from commercial agreements and it is important for international institutions to understand the performance of the business.”

Europcar announces successful placement of €400 million senior subordinated unsecured notes

Europcar Groupe S.A.(“Europcar” or the “Issuer”), a société anonyme organized under the laws of France, announced the successful placement (the “Placement”) of €400m 9.375% senior subordinated unsecured notes (the “Notes”).

The Placement priced on Thursday, November 18, 2010 and was significantly oversubscribed. The Notes will be callable from November 15, 2013 and will mature on April 15, 2018. The coupon has been set at 9.375%, payable on a semi-annual basis. The Notes are rated B- by Standard & Poor’s and Caa1 by Moody’s.

The settlement of the Notes will occur on November 26, 2010, and the Notes will be listed on the Euro MTF market of the Luxembourg Stock exchange thereafter.

As highlighted in the press release dated November 15, 2010, Europcar will use the Notes proceeds to redeem the outstanding €375 million 8.125% senior subordinated unsecured notes due 2014 (the “Fixed Rate Notes”). On November 18, 2010, Europcar issued a conditional notice of redemption to redeem in full the Fixed Rate Notes on December 20, 2010 at a price of 104.063% of the principal amount of the Fixed Rate Notes.

Philippe Guillemot, Europcar Groupe Chief Executive Officer and Charles Desmartis, Chief Financial Officer, stated: “After the successful refinancing of our main fleet financing facility completed in August, we have now extended the maturity of approximately half of our corporate debt. The completion of these two refinancing projects and the strong development of fleet operating leases in the last two years provide us with a strong and highly diversified financing structure to support our business activities in the coming years.”

Gilbert Saada, Chairman of the Board of Europcar Groupe and a Member of Eurazeo’s Executive Board, said: “We are very pleased that Europcar successfully completed the refinancing of the Fixed Rate Notes, extending half of its corporate maturities until 2018. This transaction has received strong support notably thanks to the performance of the company through the downturn and in the first nine months of 2010. We believe the new maturity profile gives the company a clear horizon to develop its leadership position and build on the recently unveiled initiatives such as car2go.”

Disney's Main Street Electrical Parade

No visit to Walt Disney World would be complete without watching a Disney parade, which is why the Main Street Electrical Parade created quite a bit of buzz in the Orlando attractions community when it was reintroduced earlier this year after a nearly decade-long absence.

The original Main Street Electrical Parade ran from 1977 to 2001 at Magic Kingdom, and when it returned in its original form in June 2010 it was only supposed to return for the summer season, but the parade's popularity has extended this event into am open ended engagement.

While Magic Kingdom has always had parades and fireworks as part of its nighttime entertainment, the 1970s era Main Street Electrical Parade has a more of an emphasis on the classic Disney movies that were released when company founder Walt Disney was still alive (Disney died in 1966, shortly after selecting Orlando as the site for Walt Disney World). That means less Disney princesses compared to previous nighttime parades--although Cinderella and Snow White figure prominently into the Main Street Electrical Parade, as they have in the past.

Other highlights of the Disney Main Street Electrical Parade include Tinkerbell, Alice in Wonderland, Peter Pan, Pinocchio, and of course, Mickey and Minnie Mouse.

Sixt Group records pre-tax earnings of EUR 72.8 million for first nine months of 2010

* “Earnings before revenue” strategy, discipline on costs, gradual revival of demand in rentals business improve earnings position

* 9-month rental revenue up 5.1%, leasing revenue up 0.6%

* Outlook for 2010 unchanged

For the period January through September 2010 the Sixt Group generated a consolidated profit before taxes (EBT) of EUR 72.8 million after EUR 2.6 million for the same period the year before. As Sixt had expected, consolidated revenue for the international mobility service provider was down slightly from a year ago. Management reconfirmed its revenue and earnings outlook for full-year 2010, as well as its statement of earings projections.

Erich Sixt, Chairman of the Managing Board of Sixt AG: “The results for the first nine months are in line with our expectations. We owe that performance to our strategy of not waiting for demand to revive, but rather maintaining a focus on high-margin revenue and cutting costs. All the same, the expected slackening of the economy and other risks still give good cause for caution about the coming year.”

Group performance in the first nine months of 2010:

- The Group’s total revenue for January through September of the year came to EUR 1.17 billion. The 3.6% decrease from last year’s equivalent figure of EUR 1.21 billion was within expectations. Revenue generated outside Germany grew 3.1%, to EUR 268.7 million.

* Rental revenue grew 5.1%, to EUR 603.1 million. A particular contributor here was gains in Europe outside Germany (+11.5%), especially in Spain and Switzerland.
* Leasing revenue grew slightly, by 0.6%, to EUR 310.6 million.
* Revenue from the sale of used leasing vehicles, which is generally subject to fluctuations over the course of the year, decreased 6.2%, to EUR 160.5 million.

- The consolidated profit before taxes (EBT) for the first nine months improved EUR 70.2 million, from EUR 2.6 million to EUR 72.8 million. A particular reason for this performance was growing rental revenue, the avoidance of revenue that is not sufficiently profitable (under the principle of “earnings before revenue”), and the Group’s reduced costs.

- After nine months, Sixt reported a consolidated profit after taxes of EUR 54.9 million, after EUR 0.6 million for the same period last year.

Group performance in Q3 2010

- The 2010 consolidated revenue of EUR 406.5 million for the period from July through September, usually a strong quarter seasonally, was 4.8% below the comparable figure from 2009 (EUR 426.8 million).

* Rental revenue, at EUR 228.6 million, grew 9.4% compared to last year’s equivalent quarter.
* Leasing revenue, at EUR 99.0 million, was slightly below the equivalent period’s figure (–4.3%).
* Revenue from the sale of used leasing vehicles decreased to EUR 45.3 million (–25.8%).

- The Sixt Group showed an EBT of EUR 38.0 million for the third quarter of 2010, a gain of 35.2% from the same quarter last year (EUR 28.1 million).

Fleet policy remains conservative

The average number of vehicles in the Sixt rental fleet in Germany and other countries (not including vehicles in franchise countries) for January through September was 65,700, compared to an average of 67,700 for all of 2009 – a 3% decrease. After the first half, the decrease was still about 7%.

Financing base strengthened and broadened still further

The Sixt Group’s total assets as at 30 September 2010, at EUR 2.13 billion, were only slightly above the figure from 31 December 2009 (EUR 2.10 billion). The largest items on the assets side of the balance sheet were still rental assets (EUR 975 million) and leasing assets (EUR 736 million).

Equity at the end of September 2010 came to EUR 534 million, an increase of about 10% from the end of 2009 (EUR 485 million). The equity ratio rose to 25% (31 December 2009: 23%), and is thus still clearly higher than the average for the rental and leasing industry in general.

In October of this year, Sixt successfully placed a bond issue for a volume of EUR 250 million with institutional investors both inside and outside Germany. The bond issue was significantly oversubscribed, and is a further building block in strengthening the Sixt Group’s financing base. The six-year maturity improves the Group’s maturity profile for its financial liabilities. In July of this year, Sixt had already placed a borrower’s note loan on the market for EUR 80 million, with a maturity of five years.

Outlook

For full-year 2010, the Managing Board still expects a substantial increase in Group EBT as against last year. Consolidated revenue for full-year 2010 is still expected to be slightly below the prior year’s figure.

Looking to future business performance, the Managing Board remains fundamentally optimistic, even though the risks of setbacks for the economic recovery in Europe still persist, and in some cases have even increased. The goal remains to return again to the levels of profitability from before the financial crisis and the recession.

Developments in the operating business units

Vehicle Rental:
With their presence in Germany, France, the UK, Spain, the Benelux, Austria and Switzerland, Sixt subsidiaries cover far more than 70% of the European rental market. The Sixt brand is represented by franchisees in the remaining countries of Europe and other parts of the world. Sixt has Vehicle Rental operations in a total of about 100 countries. At 30 September 2010, there were 1,882 Sixt rental offices worldwide, 509 of them in Germany.

In the third quarter, Vehicle Rental focused on expanding its range of products and services. Important events included the launch of rentals of electric vehicles in Munich as part of a pilot project with RWE, an expansion of the range of vehicles offered internationally by Sixt Luxury Cars to include highly attractive models like the Porsche Panamera, and the addition of a Munich site to the SIXTI Car Club, which has been offering innovative car sharing in Berlin for two years now.

The Vehicle Rental Business Unit generated total revenue of EUR 691.2 million in January through September 2010, a 4.8% decrease. The EBT totalled EUR 59.7 million, compared to EUR –12.2 million for the same period the previous year. The third-quarter EBT was EUR 32.7 million, 35.5% more than for the same quarter of 2009 (EUR 24.1 million).

Leasing:
Sixt is one of the largest German vendor-neutral, non-bank full-service leasing companies, offering corporate and private customers a broad range of supplemental services for managing fleets and individual vehicles, in addition to pure finance leasing.

Although the European leasing markets have lately begun a slow revival, many corporations still remain reluctant to invest. In keeping with the principle of “earnings before revenue”, Sixt has focused in the current financial year primarily on improving its contract margins, as well as turning aside new business that is not sufficiently profitable. The number of leases inside and outside Germany (not including franchisees) came to 54,400 at the end of this September
(31 December 2009: 60,800 leases).

The Business Unit’s leasing revenue for the first nine months of the year increased 0.6% from the same period last year, to EUR 310.6 million. Total revenue in the Leasing Unit (including revenue from the sale of used vehicles) came to EUR 471.1 million (–1.8%). The focus on profitable revenue, together with general discipline on costs, generated EBT after three quarters of EUR 12.0 million (Q1-Q3 2009: EUR 4.0 million). Of this figure, EUR 4.4 million was attributable to the third quarter (Q3 2009: EUR 1.9 million).

Car hire comparators launches safety campaign

Car hire comparator Carrentals.co.uk is launching its new ‘Hell is Other Drivers’ Road Sense campaign as part of the national 2010 Road Safety Week, designed to encourage all drivers to slow down and take care on Britain’s roads.

According to the road safety charity Brake, every 14 hours in the UK someone is killed by a driver who is speeding or travelling too fast for the conditions.

The new Carrentals.co.uk ‘Hell is Other Drivers’ campaign focuses on the dangerous driving of other road users, providing advice on how to stay safe on the roads and a range of offers, including discounts on reflective gear for children and adults from BrightKidz and Cyberglow, savings on winter clothing from OutdoorLook, and exclusive offers on car accessories from Me-Mo and emergency car kits from SurvivalBox.

Carrentals.co.uk has also developed its own ‘Highway Code for Other Drivers’, offering a light-hearted, but serious look at the dangerous actions many drivers take every day, and how everyone can improve their driving and safety.

The company has also teamed up with the Highways Agency and the national road safety charity Brake, to offer a range of information on safe driving.

Gareth Robinson, Managing Director of Carrentals.co.uk, says: “Every year car drivers, passengers and pedestrians are tragically killed in road accidents, so it is vital that we all act on the advice given by organisations such as Brake and the Highways Agency to help prevent these deaths. Despite us all being aware of the dangers of speeding and driving without care and attention, we still see drivers putting their own, and others’, lives at risk on a daily basis.

“This is the fifth year we have run our Road Sense campaign, and each year we try to encourage drivers to drive more responsibly and safely. Over the last year we’ve had a range of feedback from our customers on the dangerous actions of other drivers – from tailgating to reversing up motorways – so this year we’re trying to encourage people to think about how their actions affect others so they don’t become one of the ‘other drivers’.”

Carrentals.co.uk is the UK’s leading car hire comparison site, comparing deals from brands including Alamo, Auto Europe, Budget, Holiday Autos and Sixt.

Prime Outlets International Drive becomes Premium Outlets

For those visitors who are planning on doing a little holiday shopping at one of Orlando's expansive outlet malls, there are now two Premium Outlets to choose from, since Prime Outlets on the northernmost end of International Drive is now operating under the Premium Outlets name. Before the mall underwent a full renovation a couple of years ago, it was known as the Belz Outlet Mall.

As far as customers are concerned, the only thing that has changed for the Premium Outlet Mall on I-Drive is the name. Shoppers can still find impressive savings at Betsy Johnson, Coach, J.Crew, Kenneth Cole, Lacoste, Michael Kors, Last Call by Neiman Marcus, Polo Ralph Lauren, Saks Fifth Avenue Off 5th, Victoria's Secret, Columbia, Bass Shoes, and many more.

Orlando Premium Outlets on Vineland Ave. is still in its original location just off if the southern end of International Drive. Orlando Premium Outlets offers many of the same stores as its "sister" shopping mall just up the road. No matter which Premium Outlet Mall you choose, be prepared that parking is at a premium, although the valet service can take some of the stress out of finding a coveted parking spot.

Royal honeymoon with Wilderness Safaris

His father honeymooned in Hampshire and Balmoral with Princess Diana and at Balmoral with Camilla. But where in the world will Prince William choose for his honeymoon with Kate next summer? Both princes are known to be big fans of Botswana, and Prince William has often said his heart is in Africa – could they be heading back on safari after the wedding?

Wilderness Safaris have come up with their take on the ultimate fit-for-a-royal honeymoon – a nine night privately guided adventure staying at three of Botswana’s most sumptuous safari camps including King’s Pool Camp, Vumbura Plains Camp and Little Mombo, followed by four nights of rest and relaxation at romantic Seychelles hideaway North Island. Each location is utterly remote, meaning maximum distance between the happy couple and the prying eyes of the paparazzi!

King’s Pool Camp, Linyanti Concession

Aptly named after a Scandinavian monarch who camped at the water’s edge long ago, Kings Pool Lagoon attracts large herds of elephant during the dry season. Kings Pool Camp combines such spectacular sightings with a luxurious place from which to see them. With a lounge, dining room and pub area on expansive raised decks, there is also a swimming pool and open-air “kgotla” for romantic honeymoon dining under the stars. Accommodation is spacious and tranquil, with lounge, large bedroom area, private plunge pool for optimum privacy and outdoor showers. Apart from the simple appeal of watching the elephants at the water’s edge from the luxury of the raised decks of Kings Pool Camp, the royal couple would enjoy spectacular wildlife viewing, available on day and night game drives and walks in the surrounding area.

Distinguished by its location on the extreme North of the Okavango Delta, this camp is unlike any other safari property Kate and Will would have seen before! Each large, luxurious room is raised off the ground on wooden decks and comprises a bedroom, lounge, shower and bathroom with outdoor showers.

Open on three sides, billowing curtains between the areas create the sense of a yacht floating through the floodplains. Each room also has a plunge pool and sala perfect for gazing out over the grassland. The camp’s position encompasses just about every animal that occurs in the Okavango biome – expect close-ups of lion, leopard, elephant, cheetah and buffalo.

Little Mombo Camp, Mombo Concession

Little Mombo Camp is situated on Mombo Island, adjoining the northern tip of Chief’s Island within the Moremi Game Reserve in the Okavango Delta, northern Botswana. A small and intimate camp, Little Mombo Camp is built under a shady canopy and has just three luxurious, spacious rooms under canvas with en-suite bathrooms and outdoor showers for guests looking to get closer to nature. Much of Little Mombo Camp overlooks the surrounding floodplains which offer some of the best big game viewing in the Okavango Delta.

Activities that Kate and Will could expect to enjoy here include morning and afternoon game drives in open 4x4s, providing an exquisite vantage for viewing the high concentrations of plains game and all the predators - including the big cats. Lion sightings are frequent and guests can also see leopard and cheetah, wild dog, spotted hyena, large herds of buffalo, elephant, white rhino, southern giraffe, blue wildebeest and Burchell’s zebra.

North Island, Seychelles

Four nights on an unspoilt Seychelles island in a totally private and self-contained villa - the perfect end to the royal honeymoon! Comprising three granite outcrops with a tropical interior, North Island is one of the most spectacular eco tropical retreats in the world.

Villa 11 is the jewel in the island’s crown – recently renovated to include a home entertainment centre, this new “pure honeymoon” experience offers the ultimate in privacy and proximity to nature. Stretching over 750 square metres with cascading terraces leading down onto a private beach entry to the ocean, the property’s highlights include a jaw-dropping bathroom with panoramic views across East Beach to Mahe, Praslin and beyond, outdoor shower, a huge bath complete with champagne ledge, and al fresco massage beds on the sunken deck. Indeed, Villa 11 could have been designed with this very honeymoon in mind!

The above itinerary costs from £36,500pp, including First Class British Airways flights from London Heathrow to Johannesburg, return flights from Johannesburg to Maun with Air Botswana, 3 nights at Kings Pool Camp, 3 nights at Vumbura Plains Camp and 3 nights exclusive booking of Little Mombo Camp all with exclusive private safari vehicle and a leading specialist guide to accompany the safari; Business Class overnight flight to Mahe in the Seychelles with Air Seychelles from Johannesburg, return private helicopter charters from Mahe to North Island for 4 nights in Villa North Island and Business Class flights back to London Heathrow. Private charters can be arranged as an optional extra.

Hertz Takes the Pain Out of Car Hire

Anyone looking for cheap car hire on their Europe holidays will soon have the option of self-service kiosks.

Many travellers taking advantage of cheap flights to Europe want to hire a vehicle as well, in order to make the most of their time abroad. Most customers do not want to spend a lot of time and hassle at airport car hire desks.

This is why cheap car hire firm Hertz has decided upon a rather high-tech solution to the waiting problem. They have begun an initiative that will see self-service kiosks installed at a number of the leading airports on the Continent.

The kiosks will allow customers who have prepaid for their cheap car hire to access their vehicles simply by entering their details and pressing a few buttons. Holidaymakers will also be able to use the kiosk terminals to tweak their car hire options, adding extras like sat nav and even upgrading their choice of vehicle.

Hertz International president Michel Taride commented: "We offer customers a wide range of options currently unrivalled in the car rental industry to help them get on the road faster. With Worldwide Online Check-In, #1 Club Gold, and now Self Service Express Kiosks and a comprehensive iPhone reservations platform, Hertz continues to lead the industry in innovation for customers".

The iPhone reservations platform is an app that has already proven to be a great success in the USA, and it is due to be introduced across Europe in the next few months. The app allows Hertz customers to book cheap car hire on the move, while giving them access to information on special offers and recommended sights for the tourist driver.

Fifty centimeters of snow at Mt. Mottorone already, as well as at Domobianca and Macugnaga, and even more at Devero and Baceno, all signal in white that the mountains of the VCO region are ready for this ski season to begin. Traditional opening day is December 8, although a couple of resorts have already opened a limited number of trails. Mt. Mottarone will open in the first week of december also.

New this year is a one-pass seasonal ski pass which allows skiing in the whole of the province. In a press release of 11 October 2010 the province announced the availability of the new season pass, which will give access to all the ski facilities of the VCO – a grand total of nine ski resorts and 150 km of runs. The ski pass can be purchased online on the website of the Distretto Turistico dei Laghi and will be valid from the 1st of December, when the ski season begins. Special prices if you buy the card on-line up to 30 November: adults € 530, seniors (over 65) € 460, juniors (under 12) € 390, ski instructors € 265, trainers € 200, competitive skiers under 18 enrolled in the FISI (Italian Winter Sports Federation) and skiers under 21 with FISI points € 350.

This single season ticket gives unlimited access to the runs at Baitina di Druogno, Devero, Domobianca, Formazza, Macugnaga, Mottarone, Pian di Sole, Piana di Vigezzo, and San Domenico.

Also new this winter at Mt. Mottarone is Alpyland, which opened to great success this past summer. The toboggan ride will be running all through the winter season as well, offering a winter version of the same spectacular views of the lake and surrounding mountains.

Disney turkey legs

There are turkey legs--and then there are Disney turkey legs. So why not celebrate the holidays with a traditional poultry dish that you can hold in one hand?

The oversized turkey legs sold at the Walt Disney World theme parks and water parks have been featured on television shows and are well known for their juicy dark meat--this definitely isn't the sort of dry ultra lean white meat that most people have had in the past.

Disney turkey legs are smoked to perfection with a taste that closely resembles ham. And since the portion sizes are so large, it's probably healthier to share a Disney turkey leg than attempt to eat one solo (even though this is a turkey leg, admittedly it is not a diet food).

Best of all a Disney turkey leg can be enjoyed on the go without any carving necessary. And as a Disney guest, you'll never have to spend several hours waiting for a turkey leg to come out of the oven.

New Car Hire Technology Steps Up a Gear

Travel industry technology firm Amadeus has unveiled a new online booking system for cheap car hire.

The new system, which utilises the company's Cars Plus XML technology, makes it easier for web-based travel agents to offer car hire customers features such as matrix view, map displays and point of reference searches. Amadeus has launched the new car hire technology with the partnership of international cheap hotels provider Transhotel – the company is the first to utilise it on its own websites.

Transhotel contracting and product director Javier Sancho said: "With Amadeus Car Plus technology, we were able to easily customise the booking flow so that it fits transparently with our own look and feel. After testing the new product in the Spanish market, the application will be available for all the travel agents that work with Transhotel worldwide."

Amadeus Cars Plus is already accessible by traditional travel agents that use the Amadeus Selling Platform, but is now available for the growing online travel sector. With more people booking cheap flights, cheap hotels and cheap car hire online than ever before, the new technology looks to be a boon for this sector.

Meanwhile, Manchester-based online travel agency On The Beach (OTB) has announced a new partnership with the Affordable Car Hire firm. Under the terms of the tie-up, Affordable will provide car hire services exclusively to OTB – replacing a prior arrangement it had with carhire3000.

OTB commercial director Johnny Pollard commented: "We are very happy to be working with Affordable Car Hire, it was an obvious choice for us as they provide quality and affordable product."

Avis buoyed by strong income figures

Avis Europe reported a strong increase in overall rental income in an interim management statement.

In the four months to the end of October, the UK-based group saw rental income increase by 4.5 per cent, with trading “continuing” to improve in line with our expectations”.

“We are also seeing the benefit from account wins of the last 18 months coming through, particularly in the UK,” the car rental firm added.

“Consequently, billed days, our measure of volumes, have continued to improve month by month across most of our markets, having turned positive compared to the prior year in July.”

Rental revenue per day has been lower since August, mainly due to longer rental length, the company said.

“Utilisation has been increased on a cumulative basis to the end of October, having now absorbed the negative impact from the travel disruption caused by the volcanic ash cloud in the first half.

“This improvement is expected to be maintained for the rest of the year.”

Avis has taken advantage of stronger conditions in the used car markets to reduce the age of the fleet while keeping “tight control” of costs.

“Overall, and despite the continuing fragility of the economic environment in Europe, our expectations for the remainder of the year are unchanged,” the statement said.

Actions taken to reduce costs together with the strength of the Avis and Budget brands “have positioned us to take advantage of the expected progressive recovery in our markets”.

Growth is being accelerated in rapidly-expanding markets such as Asia. “We therefore believe the prospects for the Group remain very positive,” Avis said.

Full year results for 2010 will be published on February 28th.

News Bites: Little Bits Of News From Stresa

Just enough news to digest with a cup of cappuccino...

The Wall Street Journal has included a cheese shop in nearby Arona in their list of the top ten cheese shops IN THE WORLD. Luigi Guffanti 1876 came in fifth place on the list, preceding another one-hundred year old shop in Arona, Van Tricht Berchem, and three shops in France. The proud owner, Carlo Guffanti Fiori, says, " It is a great satisfaction to be appreciated in all the world. Our products are exported all over the planet." Exported and appreciated globally, you can find this now world-famous cheese shop on via Milano in Arona.

Brazilian director Glenio Bonder has been filming scenes from his next movie in and around Stresa. "La Belle du Seigneur" starring Jonathan Rhys Meyers and Natalia Vodianova, is a film adaptation of the story of the same name by Albert Cohen. It tells the tale of a troubled romance in which Solal (Meyers), a high-ranking Jewish diplomat, falls in love with the Protestant wife (Vodianova) of one of his subordinates. Scenes have recently been shot at Villa Jucker in Stresa as well as at the Grand Hotel des Iles Borromees. I'll certainly be watching for the film, which is expected to open in 2012.

Another thing I will be waiting for is the publication of a new book, set to arrive at the bookshop Cartoleria Libreria Leone (Via Pr. Tomaso, 18) very soon. The large tome, only in Italian, covers the history of the centuries-long tradition of fishing on Lago Maggiore. The book is heavily illustrated with old photographs and postcards, many from the private collection of Ivan Spadoni, who is not only a collector of the photographs but an expert on the subject, a practitioner of it as well, and a friend of mine.

The airline offers cheap flights to Europe, and the cheap car hire deal means that passengers travelling to some 80 countries across the world will enjoy "substantial discounts" from TravelJigsaw. Its customers – who are looking for cheap car hire – will be able to apply their discounted rates to vehicles offered from a host of leading rental suppliers.

"The new partnership with TravelJigsaw guarantees that our customers will get the lowest prices available for car hire, and throughout the year they will also have access to exclusive discounts and promotional offers," said Jet2.com.

All rentals will be "all-inclusive" – meaning that they will offer comprehensive motor insurance, unlimited mileage and all local taxes or fees will be paid for. There will also be no annoying administration charges.

Jet2.com said that all vehicles are subject to the cheap car hire offer, whether they are booked well in advance or at the last minute, and whether they are booked online or using a UK-based call centre.

Jet2.com retail director Paul Humphreys commented: "TravelJigsaw has a reputation for offering excellent customer service and great value for money, which are values Jet2.com also prides itself on... Car hire is an important part of holiday planning for a lot of travellers, and we wanted to offer our customers a little extra help to make their holiday that bit more affordable."

TravelJigsaw is part of the Priceline Group of companies and among the largest online car rental agencies in the world.

Europcar wins top honours at World Travel Awards

Europcar was named for the second time the World’s Leading Green Transport Solution Company for the second year running at the 2010 World Travel Awards Grand Final Ceremony this month. The company was also elected World’s Leading Car Hire Company for the fourth year in a row.

The World Travel Awards are the “Oscars” of the travel industry, with 187,000 industry professionals voting for the best company in each category in seven regions of the world.

Upon receiving the award, Europcar Groupe Global Marketing Director Jehan de Thé said, “We are truly proud to receive these awards once again. They represent industry recognition of our approach to environmental protection. They also confirm our role as a pioneer in raising awareness among our customers, in enhancing our service offering and in expanding our fleet of environmentally friendly vehicles.”

Europcar’s environmentally friendly fleet includes vehicles which emit less than 140 grams of CO2 per kilometer, as well as models equipped with alternative engines (hybrid or electric) or engines that are compatible with biofuels, bio ethanol and natural gas. To further expand this nature of its fleet, Europcar recently signed a partnership agreement with PSA to launch two new-generation electric vehicles on the car rental market in 2011: the Peugeot iON and Citroen C-Zero. This partnership follows the pre-order of 500 Renault electric vehicles for delivery in Europe’s largest cities in the 3rd quarter of 2011.

Europcar is giving maximum visibility to its environmentally friendly cars and encourages consumers to choose a “greener” car when making reservations. In addition to adding a section dedicated to eco-friendly cars on its web site, the Company provides specific information about the CO2 emissions of all models in its rental car fleet.

To go even further in this area, Europcar is launching car2go service in Hamburg, Germany, in the spring of 2011. A unique concept in urban mobility, car2go will offer a fleet of 300 Smart Fortwo vehicles, which customers will be able to find and rent – without a reservation—around Hamburg, thanks to leading edge telematics. The service concept is environmentally friendly, notably because the car2go Smarts are equipped with a high energy efficiency engine and a solar panel on the roof.

A car rental industry pioneer in environmental protection, Europcar opened its first “environmental” agency in Paris in 1999. The Group was also the first European company to develop an Environmental Charter, which was certified by Bureau Veritas in 2008.

Disney’s Fort Wilderness

Staying at a Disney resort can be rather expensive, but what if you had the option of staying in your own tent or RV? If you are willing to give up the creature comforts of a hotel room, a camping trip at Walt Disney World's Fort Wilderness can help reduce the cost of accommodations without skimping on all of the fun.

Whether you pitch your own tent or let the folks at Disney set up a tent and cots for you, you can enjoy the quiet relaxation of a family camping excursion, with the added bonus of a volleyball court, grills, picnic tables, firewood for sale plus clean bathrooms and hot showers (after all, this is Disney; there are no nasty pit toilets here).

All Fort Wilderness guests have access to the expansive swimming pool on site, and the kids will enjoy the nightly campfire jamborees and outdoor movies. Other available activities include bicycling and horseback riding on designated trails.

And for those guests who want the experience of a woodsy retreat without spending the night in a sleeping bag or roasting hot dogs over an open fire, Disney's Wilderness Resort also has a restaurant and a full service lodge with all of amenities one would expect in a traditional hotel. Like any Disney resort, there is regular shuttle service to the theme parks and water parks, and unlike most campgrounds, even the mosquitoes tend to stay away from this very Disney camping experience.
