Winter Garden Trail

The West Orange trail- when completed, will be a 36 mile, multi-purpose recreational gateway containing a 14 foot wide paved surface to be enjoyed by walkers, joggers, hikers, bikers, skaters and the physically challenged. The first segment of the Trail is complete from Killarney Station to Welch Road in Apopka. The Trail will eventually continue north of Apopka (Phase 4) to Kelley Park. Phase 5 will link the Trail to Lake County (from Orange County Parks & Recreation brochure or http://www.orangecountyparks.net/)

This blogger took his family for a nice bike ride from Winter Garden to Oakland Park. It was a delight to see how Winter Garden has been able to preserve the small town feeling and exploit the trail to attract development. There are some very nice neighborhoods already there and others under development in the area. There is a strong police presence as the headquarters of the Winter Garden Police is along the path of the Trail. Generally people who frequent this Trail, devoted cyclists or beginners, are considerate of each other. there are two bike shops on this section of the trail for small repairs, refreshments, etc. The also have good quality bikes for rent including attachments for little ones to young to ride alone. There are also two bike shops in downtown Winter garden (one of which is opening soon).

This blogger and his beautiful wife returned the next morning at 8:30 am and found parking tight, but the ride was enjoyable as temperatures were just right. All in all we covered just ten miles this morning and plan to make visiting the Trail a regular family event.

I regret having skimped on Karla's bike bought at the notorious retail discounter we all love as I foresee spending a few dollars upgrading it. The trail is easy so high end, multi-gear jobs are unnecessary; but the lighter the bikes, the more dollars you'll spend.
