The current fountain was built in 1957, replacing an earlier fountain that was constructed in 1912. The fountain was in need of some repairs prior to the lightning strike, but the estimated repairs to fix this latest damage has a $1 million price tag, and the city's insurance policy on the fountain has a $500,000.
The city is still deciding on the fate of the Lake Eola fountain, since budget cutbacks make it difficult to afford repairs at this time. The City Beautiful motto still remains, but as for the fountain--stay tuned.
