Rental Car Insurance Coverage

I want to know what kind of insurance if any does a car renter need if they don't own a vehicle and don't have insurance ?

The minimum insurance required to rent a car in the United States is basic public liability and property damage. (This covers only other persons and property, NOT the rental car itself in the case of loss or damage... that is a seperate coverage.) While car rental companies in California DO NOT include any state-required liability insurance into the base price of their rental cars, most other states, DO include this coverage in the base rate of the rental. Just check with the car rental company before the rental to make sure that this minimum insurance is included.

When you are looking at rate quotes and you see optional insurance purchases like Additional Liability Insurance (ALI) or Supplemental Liability Insurance (SLI).. these are optional purchases that offer more coverage (money wise) than what is required by state law (and already included in your rate).

If you wish to have insurance coverage for the rental car itself, in case of loss, damage or theft, you would have to either purchase it from the car rental company, see if any coverage is included in your credit card benefits, or purchase it from a travel insurance company that offers rental car coverage.

Hope this helps!
