London Heathrow is by far the busiest airport in the UK. It served close to 67 million passengers in 2008, almost double the number handled by the UK's 2nd busiest airport, London Gatwick. The airport is located 14 miles to the west of central London in the Borough of Hillingdon. Along with London City Airport, London Heathrow is one of only two airports serving the capital to be located within the Greater London area. Overall, London Heathrow is the worlds 3rd busiest airport; only Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport and O'Hare International Airport, Chicago, handle more passengers. In terms of international passenger numbers, London Heathrow is the busiest international airport in the world, followed by Charles de Gaule International Airport in Paris and Amsterdam Airport Schiphol. The airport currently has 5 terminals; the 5th was opened by Queen Elizabeth II in 2008. Around 100 scheduled and charter airlines offer flights from London Heathrow to short-haul and long-haul destinations all over the world. London Heathrow's top destination in 2007 was John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York. Other destinations in the top ten for that year were Dublin, Amsterdam, Paris, O'Hare Chicago, Dubai, Hong Kong, Frankfurt, Los Angeles and Madrid (in descending order respectively).

London Heathrow is an important hub for BMI, British Airways and Virgin Atlantic. British Airways has by far the largest presence here; the airline is currently the sole user of Terminal 5. It offers flights from London Heathrow Airport to domestic and international destinations throughout the UK, Americas, Asia/Pacific, Europe, Middle East and Africa. BMI offers flights from London Heathrow to popular domestic and European locations as well as less common international destinations such as Addis Ababa, Almaty, Bishket, Damascus, Khartoum, Tbilisi and Tehran. Virgin Atlantic serves long-haul destinations in the US, Asia/Pacific, Middle East and Africa. Other major airlines offering flights to and from London Heathrow Airport are Air New Zealand, United Airlines, Lufthansa, Air Canada, Air India, American Airlines, Pakistan International Airlines, Emirates, Scandinavian Airlines System, Delta Airlines and Qantas.

As is to be expected of such an important travel hub, London Heathrow is well connected to the local and national transport networks, so your journey to and from the airport won't be difficult. There are four stops on the London Underground serving the airport, an express train service linking the airport to London Paddington railway station, plus rail link coach services to Reading and Woking railway stations. Full transport details and information can be found on the airport website.

If you can't find flights to London Heathrow, then the closest alternative airports are London City, London Luton, London Stansted and London Gatwick.
