Standing on top of one of the most extraordinary continents in the world is a life changing experience.
Located in Tanzania, Mount Kilimanjaro is a dormant volcano and sits on the border of Kenya looking over the rich African plains. It stands at 5,895 meters, the highest peak in Africa and fourth highest peak in the world.
The feeling of conquering one of nature's most fearsome landmarks is incredible and the trek will offer beautiful, once in a lifetime views of the surrounding area. But be warned, this will be no stroll in the park. Here are some things you need about climbing Mount Kilimanjaro and what you need to do to prepare for it.
Training
It seems like an obvious suggestion, but extensive training should be undertaken before completing a trek which will be as challenging as it will be rewarding. Mount Snowdon in Wales is a popular choice to prepare trekkers, although regular long hikes around hilly areas are also beneficial as they will simulate ascension on Mount Kilimanjaro. Make sure you begin training at least two months before the trek and in the same gear you intend to walk in. It is imperative items like your hiking boots are sufficiently broken in to avoid blisters and discomfort.
A medical examination
Don't leave a challenge like this to chance. Make sure you are fully checked over in case you are likely to suffer severely from problems like altitude sickness, which can arise when the body struggles to take in the thin air. Any pre-existing medical conditions should also be fully evaluated.
Pack proficiently
There is no use in getting all the way to Tanzania and forgetting the basics. Essentials like waterproof trousers and jackets are a no brainer, but forgetting something like gloves can be detrimental to the trek. Someone won't always have a spare pair and there isn't a local super market you can pop down some new ones. It does happen, so consult gear lists for the extensive amount of equipment required.
Enjoy it!
It is easy to want the hike to end when you suffer from tiredness or altitude sickness, particularly in the conditions Mount Kilimanjaro will throw at you. But the spectacular scenery and sense of pride you have when getting to the top is like nothing you will ever experience. Look out for the gorgeous, unique vegetation on the ascent up the mountain and the stunning views of the sun rising over Mawenzi's icefields and jagged peaks to the east of the peak.
