No other city in Europe can offer the cultural dynamism, atmosphere and history of Berlin. After the fall of the Wall in 1989, huge sums of money were spent restoring the city to its former glory and a city break to Berlin is a great way to explore this dynamic city.
Below, I have listed 5 of the top things to do when enjoying a short break to Berlin:
Visit Museum Island
Towards the eastern end of Unter den Linden is the UNESCO World Heritage Site, Museum Island. Museum Island is home to five of Berlin's most important museums and is a great place to spend a day wandering around. Of the many highlights, two of my favorites include the bust of Nefertiti and the spectacular Pergamonmuseum, one of the world's major archaeological museums
Badeschiff (Bathing Ship)
One of the most unique tourist attractions in Berlin is the floating public swimming pool called the Badeschiff (bathing ship). The swimming pool was converted from the hull of a cargo ship and also has an area for soaking up the sun. At night the pool turns into an ultra-cool live music venue which plays host to some of the most famous DJs from throughout the world.
Berlin Beer Festival
On the first weekend of every August, Berlin plays host to the International Berlin Beer Festival. Over 750,000 festival goers attend this three day event that showcases beer from hundreds of breweries from 80 different countries. There is also live music at the festival. Demand for hotels and hostels around this time is extremely high so it is wise to book accommodation well in advance.
East Side Gallery
The East Side gallery is a 1.3km long stretch of the Berlin Wall and is the world's largest open air art gallery. Artists from around the world have covered this stretch of the Wall with over 100 works of art and the wall is now considered as a memorial to international freedom.
Stroll Through Berlin's Past
One of the best way to immerse yourself in the history of this great city is to simply take a stoll. A great place to start is on the Unter den Linden which has monuments that span the city's unique history. At the heart of the Unter den Linden is the magnificent and iconic Brandenburg Gate and to the north of the Gate is the German Parliament's Reichstag which was reconstructed by Paul Baumgarten between 1961 and 1964.
