Photos: Photography Contest Winners -- Part 2

Here's the next collection of photos from the FotograFIAMO contest. These six were taken by three different photographers, but all have a common theme of having a view of the lake from a vantage point high in the mountains. And every one of these vantage points is part of a well-established and easily hiked trail, making these photos hopefully an inspiration to take your camera and do some trekking.  Lago Maggiore dal Mottarone, taken by Marco Angelini. The island you are looking at is Isola Madre, and that is Lombardia and the Lepontine mountains that you see covered in snow.

 Linea Cadorna, taken by Mirko Croci. Look at these mountain goats, who seem to be posing for the camera. And look at the long line of them making their way up the hill. The Linea Cadorna is a military line of great importance from the first World War. These fortifications are near Ornavasso. The hiking is considered easy, much of the path being an old mule trail. It is known for the trenches, tunnels and roads from the war.

 Apparently the goats are very curious! These are atop Monte Massone, photographed by Marco Cerini. Monte Massone is a mountain of 2161 meters in height, between Gravellona and Ornavasso. It is well known among trekkers and considered to have one of the most beautiful views in the region.

 Wow. What a moon. Maybe so stunning because it was photographed from high atop Mt. Morissolino, 1415 meters high above Verbania. Morissolina Natura, taken by Mirko Croci.

This is Morissolo Trekking, also by Mirko Croci. Morissolo is another peak near Morissolino. Morissolo is 1313 meters high, with well-marked trails, signs, benches, and views galore. Both of these peaks can be reached by beginning your hike in Piancavallo, a town over Verbania.

The name FotografiAMO Neveazzurra is a little bit of a play on words: Fotografiamo being let's photograph, but Amo Neveazzurra being a slogan Distretto uses which means I love Neveazzurra. And Neveazzurra is the VCO region, this northernmost part of Piemonte, which is characterized by snow on the mountains (neve) and the azzurra (blue) color of the lakes.


Distretto Turistico dei Laghi has their office in Stresa, on a narrow alley across from the Stresa boat dock. The building had at one time been a casino; I had the pleasure once of seeing the grand liberty-style space inside where they hold meetings. Distretto's mission, as stated by them, is to provide publications, Internet sites, educational materials and information, and establish relationships with the press and with tour operators, all with the goal of promoting the region. They will use these new photographs in their efforts to do this.
