Who is responsible for an Accident in a rental car?

My boyfriend was teaching his friend to drive using a rental car and got into an accident.

Thankfully, no one got hurt, but the rental car's bumper was damaged and so is the car that they hit. Will he be responsible for the damage, since he was only sitting on the front passenger side teaching his friend to drive?

Yes, unfortunately your boyfriend will be fully responsible for any damage to the rental vehicle. They will probably also charge him a loss of use fee for the time that the vehicle is in the shop and unable to be rented. All additional drivers of a rental car must have a valid drivers license and sign an additional driver form at the rental counter. Your boyfriend is responsible because he allowed an unauthorized and unlicensed driver to drive the rental car.

As far as the other vehicle that was hit, he would be responsible for that as well, and should get in contact with his insurance adjuster right away and check into his liability coverage.
