Car Rental Drop Fees
I'm looking to rent a car one way, but I can't seem to find anything available at any of the websites that I'm checking. What would happen if I just booked the car as if I was returning back to the pickup location, but then just dropped it off in another city. They can't stop me, right?
You are correct that the car rental company cannot stop you from dropping a car off to a different city, once you've picked it up.
BUT...if you drop it off in another city, without the prior approval of the rental car company (and a predetermined one way fee) you will be charged an unauthorized drop fee. This will be automatically be charged to your credit card and you will have no choice but to pay whatever drop off fee they decide to charge (read the fine print on your contract).
If you're having trouble finding a one way rental from city 1 to city 2... you may wish to try picking a city in between the two... it will probably be an inconvenience,(and you will be paying a more expensive rate because you'll have 2 one way rentals) but you may find availability for a one way from city 1 to city 3 and then one from city 3 to city 2, where you wanted to drop it off orginally. This will be cheaper in the long run, than an unauthorized drop charge.
