Do All Car Rental Companies Charge for an Extra Driver?

Do all rentals charge extra for a second driver? My sister and I are going to Hawaii for a month next Feb. (2010) We are both over 65.

Generally they all charge for a second driver. The only exception tends to be a spouse. Some may not charge for a spouse.

You may be able to get an additional driver fee waived with certain discounts. I've heard of people being able to get free additional drivers when using a AAA or AARP discount (if they're a member), but you would have to check with the individual car rental companies, as this wouldn't be something they would advertise on their websites. There also may be restrictions on who could be an additional driver.

Also, if you're unable to avoid the additional driver fee: when you are checking rates, make sure to check for the additional driver fee for the period of the rental. Some companies will charge you a per day fee for the full period; some companies may have a maximum charge that will be cheaper.

Hope this helps!
