August In Stresa -- The Spritz

Agosto. August.

It is the height of the summer season here in Stresa, as in all the touristic places in Italy. Sunday, August 1 marked the busiest travel day of the year in Italy; the news stations had reporters placed in train stations and airports, interviewing people regarding their travel plans. From what I can see many have chosen Stresa as their destination. In these next two weeks of August that I will be in Stresa I'll try to document a little bit of what I see here now.

The Spritz

Now this is one way to cool off during a hot summer day. We noticed these groups enjoying Spritz cocktails at Lido Beach Club in Baveno; however, it's the first time I've seen Spritz prepared in this way.

The Spritz cocktail was Austrian in origin before it became the quintessential drink in Venice. But in the past few summers it has also taken the rest of Italy by storm, and now can probably be called 'the' Italian summer cocktail. The classic recipe is:

3 parts Prosecco
2 parts Aperol
a spritz of fizzy water

The drink should be served over ice and finished with a slice of orange.
