Tenerife holidays ?EUR" A Trip to the Seville European Film Festival

AppId is over the quota

With its hot temperatures and evener hotter culture, it is no surprise that Spanish and Tenerife holidays are top of the holiday wish lists for many holidaymakers looking for some fiery fun and inspiration. We checked out one of Spain's biggest festivals - and one of Europe's most celebrated - the Seville European Film Festival.

For nine days every year, Seville becomes the home of European cinema as the host of their very own film festival. And with a schedule of seminars, lectures and director tributes that celebrate contemporary European film, it is a must-try for any film buff visiting the area.

As well as a popular awards ceremony attended by silver screen favourites, nearly a hundred film screenings also take place during this time at the Lope de Vega and Nervion Plaza cinemas. And if you book in advance, you may even be able to grab some of the free seats available.

Awarding cash prizes to some successful nominees, the main competition aims to help finance the distribution of their films - as well as recognizing their cinematic achievements. Categories include fiction and documentary projects, films by pre-nominees by the European Film Academy and collaborations with Eurimages and canal ARTE. Non-competitive short films are also eligible if you fancy joining previous attendees and nominees like Roberto Saviano, John Hurt, Carlos Saura and Ben Kingsley and transforming the video from your last Lanzarote holidays into an art house classic.

This year's festival, which was held from the 4th-12th November 2011, also saw director Steve McQueen collect an award for his film Shame, as well as Lech Majewski for The Mill and The Cross and Nadezhda Markina and Michael Fassbender become the best actress and actor.

In addition to celebrating Russian cinema and female filmmakers this year, a number of special events were also held throughout the city to encourage the local populace to get involved. As part of a six and a half hour photo marathon on the streets of Seville more than 250 photographers were encouraged to try and snatch the perfect shot, while a thematic gymkhana also offered the chance to win tickets to the festival's jam-packed programme. A photo exhibition about Ingmar Bergman was also a must-see.

With its growing reputation for showcasing high-quality talent, it is perhaps no surprise that the festival now attracts 80,000 visitors every year - and is well worth incorporating in to your Canaries holidays if possible. Check the festival website for details of next year's events.
