Introduction

The city of Agra is a historical city in the state of Uttar Pradesh, the most populous state of India. It rose to prominence during the reign of the Lodi Dynasty and then the Mughal Empire. It served as the capital of the Mughal Empire in the 16th century. It is also the home to three famous UNESCO world heritage sites, namely The Taj Mahal, Fatehpur Sikri and the Agra Fort, all three of which were built by the Mughal rulers. These three monuments are the main reason for the popularity of Agra tours and Agra tour packages.

History

The city has been mentioned in the ancient Hindu epic, the Mahabharata and so the history of the city can be dated back to thousands of years in the past. However, it was during the Mughal era that the city of Agra became a center of arts, religion and education. The first Mughal Emperor of India, Babar, built a garden on the banks of the river Yamuna, known as Aram Bagh and then his grandson, Akbar, built the new city of Fatehpur Sikri.
