There are several different transportation options in Ireland, but one of the most popular with locals and tourists alike is that of driving. Ireland’s roads are numerous and, for the large part, well-kept. Tourists often choose, on arriving in Ireland, to hire a car for the duration of their stay so they can see the Emerald Isle on their own schedule and in their own time. Of course, it is also possible to hire a driver to go with the car, but this is beyond the budget of the average tourist, and with a map in hand and a rental car to take you there, there is really no reason that you should not be able to find where you want to go all by yourself.
It is quite easy to obtain a hired car in Ireland. Airports often host booths for multiple car hire companies, so in advance to making your journey, you may want to compare prices and services offered by each car company. You will also want to take a close look at the individual regulations of each car hire company, as most have slightly varied policies on a number of topics.
For example, if you are a visitor from overseas but do not have an international driver’s licence, some rental companies may not rent to you. Some, however, will accept a valid licence from your home country, and some will accept licenses only from select countries (those with mandatory road tests, for example) so depending on your circumstances, you may be considered ineligible. Similarly, many companies will not rent to persons under twenty-three years of age, and most of those who do will charge a security deposit. It is particularly difficult to rent a car if you are under twenty-one years of age, so be sure to call ahead to verify these details prior to arrival.
