Renting a Car with a Debit Card
Posted on Monday, May 11, 2009 by car rental deals orlando international airport
I've heard that most car rental companies accept debit cards. I'm 21 years old and am looking to rent a car this summer. I don't have a credit card, but I do have a prepaid Walmart card that has a Visa Logo. I plan on renting a car with Enterprise, as long as the debit card has the Visa logo will they accept it?
While many companies will accept a regular debit or debit check card that is associated with your bank account, they do not accept prepaid debit cards as credit identification. They are generally only accepted as a method of payment at the end of the rental.
With many car rental companies, debit card users are also required to be at least 25 years old in order to able to rent.
I checked Enterprise's policies (the help section FAQ's on their website)
Under "What do I need to rent a car" their website said:All drivers must have a valid U.S., Canadian, or foreign driver's license. An International Driver's Permit is required with all non-English foreign licenses. All drivers must have a major credit card in their own name and be at least 21 years of age or older.
Under "What payment methods are accepted to pay for the car" it said:A major credit card in the renter’s name is required for a deposit on all rentals.
When the rental is returned, debit card, or a major credit card can be
accepted to pay for the rental. Traveler’s checks can be used for rentals in the United States and Canada.
Under "Does Enterprise accept debit cards" their website said:Some of our Enterprise locations will accept a debit card for the rental deposits and payments. Please contact the office you plan to rent from to determine their policies on renting with a debit card.
Then I checked about prepaid credit cards. Under "Does Enterprise accept pre-pay credit cards?" it said:
Enterprise requires that you have a major credit with a set credit limit. We do not accept pre-pay credit cards. We apologize for any inconvenience.
I think you will find that the policies are similar for all the major car rental companies.
Hope this answers your question and good luck with your rental plans.
