Car Rental Insurance Coverage

Does my own auto insurance policy cover me when I rent a car?

It depends on what type of coverage you have in your policy. You are automatically covered for third party public liability and property damage in any car that you drive, including a rental car. The rental car companies also carry this basic coverage on their cars.

If the car rental company offers Supplemental or Additional Liability insurance, this merely increases your coverage beyond the minimum amount required by state law. Your own auto insurance may already do that. Of course, if you go through your own policy, any claims will affect your rates, as it would with your own vehicle.

What you will want to check with your auto insurance provider, is if your policy would cover you for any damage to or loss of (theft) the rental car itself.

Determining the amount of coverage that you may already have and/or the restrictions of that coverage, will allow you to make an informed decision when they ask you at the rental counter if you'd like to purchase any of their optional coverages or waivers!
