Crossing the Canada/US Border in a Rented Van?

I am canadian and have sold my home in Florida. I have rented a van in Florida to bring my personal belongings back to Canada and then I am returning the van to the United States. Will I have a problem crossing the border from the US to Canada in the van rented from Alamo?

The answer depends on your residency, more than your citizenship.

If you’re a U.S resident, you may drive the rental car into Canada (as long as Alamo allows it). However, you must let the rental company know when you pick up your car that you plan to drive into Canada. Alamo may have to issue you a Canadian Non-Resident Insurance Card.

If you’re a Canadian resident, Canadian Customs regulations prohibit you from entering Canada with a U.S.registered car. Renters with a Canadian driver’s license and a car with a U.S. license plate won’t be allowed to cross the border into Canada. Customers with a Canadian driver’s license planning to cross the border into Canada must be provided with a rental vehicle that has a Canadian license plate. Make sure you discuss this with the rental counter before you pick up your vehicle.

As long as you are a US resident with a US drivers license, and can show it at the border, you will have no problem. If you would not be considered a US resident (ie do not have a US drivers license), you would have to ask Alamo, in advance, to make arrangements to be able to a) provide you with a vehicle with Canadian license plates OR b) make arrangements for you to change vehicles, at an Alamo near the Canadian border, to a vehicle with Canadian license plates.

Hope this helps!
