Readers' Mail

Lots of mail from readers about two timely issues:

Q: Will the cablecar to Mottarone be running in late May 2010?

A: The good news for anyone traveling to Stresa from today forward is that the Mottarone Cableway, after a several month long shutdown for maintenance, reopens today, May 1, with a first run for passengers at 9:30 am. The cableway has been in service for 40 years now; and after this rejuvenation hopefully will be transporting passengers to the top of the mountain for many years still to come.

Does this mean that the Lake Maggiore Express will not operate that day?

A: Yes, unfortunately the news of the national transportation strike scheduled for May 28, 2010 does mean that if you were planning to do anything that would require a train, bus, or ferry, such as the Lago Navigazione boats to the Borromean Islands or the Lago Express train trip, you should rethink your ideas and schedule those events for another day, just to be sure you will not be disappointed. If the strike occurs as planned, there will be only very limited services available from 9:00 pm on the evening of May 27 to 9:00 pm on the evening of May 28. Very limited services will be running between 6:00 am to 8:40 am, and again between 4:30 pm to 7:50 pm.
