Personal Car Insurance and a Rental Car

Does my AL car insurance transfer to a rental car rented in AL and drove to CA?

I'm originally from San Diego, CA and moved to Alabama slightly over 7 years ago. My husband and I have reserved a rental car for a trip out to California during the winter break. We made the reservation here in Alabama and will be driving out to California with our children. We have full coverage through Geico on our car, will this insurance transfer to our rental? Will it cover us in all the states we cross or are in?

If you have liability insurance, you are covered, but only for liability. Liability insurance basically covers the driver and not the car. If you have liability insurance, (which is required by law) then you are covered in whatever car you drive, as long as (if it is not your personal vehicle) it is a rare occurrence, and not part of your normal routine. A rental car would be considered a rare occurrence; your insurance company will cover any damages you cause to anyone else (property and injury), up to your limit.

However, your other coverage options may not transfer (collision, comprehensive) so any damage to the you cause to the rental car could be your responsibility. Even if you have collision and comprehensive insurance in your policy, these coverages are specific to the car, so you must check with Geico to see if these coverages carry over to a rental car as well.

Your insurance companies may also offer a special endorsement policy that provides coverage for non-owned cars. But keep in mind, under this plan, if you cause damage to a rental Car it will cause your regular car insurance premium to increase.

Call and discuss your concerns with your Geico agent.

Hope this helps!
