Exploring London with Children

London is a fairly child-friendly city making it easy to travel with children. The city has museums that have sections especially for kids and there is a host of playground around the city to run off all that excess energy. The city and surrounding area are full of things to do and see for the whole family.
Transportation
Choose from the subway called the Tube, buses including double deckers, taxis and trains for traveling. Public transportation in London is easy to understand and extensive. In most cases, kids travel free.
Museums
Visits to London museums are educational and fun for kids and parents. The Museum of London Docklands has an area called the Mudlarks where kids under 12 can pretend they work at the docks. They weigh and load cargo on ships and the trains talk. The Foundling Museum was a home for abandon children, which now provides educational activities. Next door is Coram's Fields, a supervised playground. The British Museum has many exhibits including mummies. The National Army Museum provides a play area for children under 10 where they climb rock walls, through tunnels and glide down slides. Dinosaur skeletons abound at the Natural History Museums and at the Museum of Childhood kids can dress up in clothing from ages past. Older children enjoy the London Dungeon, an interactive horror extravaganza or go to the Tower of London and Madam Tussads Wax Museum.
Other Activities
No trip to London should miss The Changing of the Guard occurs at Buckingham Palace. The London Zoo opened in 1827 and now has over 130 species of animals. Take a ride on the London Eye, a 135 meter high observation wheel with safe glass enclosed capsules. The London Aquarium gives visitors an opportunity to explore aquatic life. Visit Piccadilly Circus for all kinds of things to see and do.
Outside London
While in London, do not hesitate to take a train to nearby areas with interesting sites to see. Legoland is near London and worth a visit with children. Theme Parks include Thorpe Park and Chessington World of Adventure. Go to Windsor or Leeds Castles or follow the maze through Hampton Court. Take a 1 hour train ride to Norfolk and relax on one of the many beaches, such as Hunstanton, which caters for families with pony rides, an arcade and more. If you then want to go inland, visit Norwich, a medieval town with a castle and cathedral to explore. Holidays in Norfolk can offer a great contrast to being in the hustle and bustle of London.
