With the 2012 Olympic games taking place in London, why not use this great event as an excuse to travel to the UK's colourful and exceptional capital this year?

Although the London 2012 Olympics are some time away, the UK's capital city has been in the public eye form some time now as the preparations for the Olympic games continue. And until the games begin in July 2012, there is so much to see and do in London that it would be quite a shame to not get a sense of this terrific city in the run up to this prestigious event.

London is, of course, well known across the world, and sights such as the red double decker buses, Buckingham Palace, Downing Street and Bond Street are common images around the world, and every year millions of people from all over the world, such as the US, Canada, Australia andd Europe travel to the UK's capital city. While some travel for seasonal events such as London Fashion Week, or special occasions like the Royal Wedding, London has a number of attractions and places to see that are unrivalled, and keep the tourists coming.

Depending on your interests and passions, you will find that there is something for everyone in London, and if you are a fan of the arts, such as theatre, dance, film, music and visual art, then you'll find areas of London, such as the glittering West End, which houses London's bustling and vibrant theatre district, are ideally suited for you. So before you book your flights and your hotel in London, make sure that you know what areas of the city that you want to go to, and how long it will take to travel from your chosen hotel in London to your chosen attraction, whether it's the House of Parliament, The London Eye or even Harrods. Transport in London is excellent, and there are many ways to get around the city, whether it's by foot, by bus, taxi or even by the underground, or subway train, so while you're researching where to go, look at what transport methods are available to you, because London can be deceptively big.

When it comes to knowing what clothes to pack, you will have to study the weather and the seasons to make sure that you are always properly dressed. The summer in London, as with the rest of the UK and be quite difficult to predict, and while it will be much warmer than normal, it's advisable to pack something that will protect you from an unexpected shower or downpour, such as an umbrella or a lightweight and waterproof jacket. For the autumn, make sure you pack clothes that will keep you warm and dry, and if you're travelling during the winter, make sure you have plenty of layers and a good pair of boots or wellies with you, because winters in the UK have become increasingly snowy, frosty and slippery.

When it comes time for the Olympic games, remember that London will be much busier than normal during that time, so if you have tickets to any of the games or events, make sure you leave your London hotel with plenty of time to spare, because delays during this time in London are to be expected.
