The city is yours to see if you know where to go. Atlanta is a multicultural city with many areas of interest to visit. You can spend a lot of money, little money or practically no money. No matter which route you take, you would have to spend money for transportation to get to the event or activity and you probably would need money to buy food, unless you packed a lunch.
If you drove a car this would let you visit a lot of places without spending money for admission. In other words sightseeing.To start with you could cluster some of the places in one area and drive from one to the other. For example you could start off with any of the areas mentioned below and be able to see them from a car or get out of the car walk around. Most of the parks have scheduled free movies, concerts, art and crafts shows. Most of the events below have an admission fee, but you can find those that fit within your budget.
1. South of Atlanta

Atlanta Hartsfield Jackson Airport (Car Rental Atlanta)
2. Downtown Atlanta

Grant Park Zoo - stroll the park - parking is free

Turner Field - the Braves Stadium (baseball)

The Georgia Capitol Museum and the Georgia State Capitol building with the gold dome located on Washington Street

Underground Atlanta - you can park (paid parking) - and stroll the shops and events underground

Westin Peachtree Plaza - circular or round hotel with the Sun Dial restaurant which rotates at the top while dining

Atlanta Aquarium

Centennial Olympic Park - walk in the park - scheduled free events in park

Phillips Arena- The Atlanta Hawks (basketball)

The Georgia Dome- The Atlanta Falcons - (football)

Georgia State University

Atlanta University Center - Spellman College, Morehouse College, Clark Atlanta University
3. Midtown Atlanta

Atlantic Station - movies, shops, outdoor mall

Georgia Tech

Piedmont Park - walk in the park - scheduled free events in the park

Atlanta Botanical Gardens

Famous Peachtree Street

5. Buckhead - famous for restaurants, hotels, shopping - Lenox Square Mall and Phipps Plaza
6. Stone Mountain Park- one-mile hike up the mountain - five-mile walk around the mountain, laser shows, events, water park, walking paths, fishing, boat rides and kids park (free & paid).
7. Lake Lanier - beach, boating, picnicking, fishing - Some other lakes are: Lake Altoona, Lake Jackson, Lake Oconee, West Point Lake

There are many shopping malls in Atlanta with a huge variety of stores. The parking is generally free at the malls. A few of them also have paid parking. You can browse and window shop as you feel;

Lenox Square Mall - located in Buckhead - inside perimeter

Cumberland Mall - I-285 West - inside perimeter

Perimeter Mall - I-285 North - outside perimeter

Northpoint Mall - GA. 400 - outside perimeter

Gwinnett Place Mall - I-85 North

Discovery Mall - I- 85 North - at Sugarloaf Parkway

Northlake Mall - I-285 East - inside perimeter at Northlake Parkway

Stonecrest Mall - I - 20 East - outside perimeter

South Dekalb Mall I- 20 - inside perimeter

Southlake Mall I-75 south

Tanger Outlet Mall I-75 south at Exit 212
Other places of interest for sightseeing are the Dekalb Farmer's Market, Forest Park Farmer's Market and The Buford Highway Farmer's Market. They all have free parking. These will likely take a whole day just to see the many different types of foods available.
Of course there are many places of worship. It's just a matter of choosing which one you want. This is just a listing of suggestions to get you started on your search for things to do while in Atlanta. I have not touched on the areas of restaurants, nightlife, shopping and points of interest located in and outside of the Atlanta Area. There are many things to do and explore while in Atlanta without spending a lot of money.
