What to Pack for a Spontaneous Break Abroad

By Catherine McCulloch

Swimwear may be small but you really only need to take two swimsuits on your holidays in Salou. A plain black swimming costume or swim shorts can double up as daytime separates and are great for wearing out when sightseeing just in case there is a surprising pool or lagoon to jump into. You want to be ready for adventure after all.

Unfortunately as the weather is never guaranteed on cheap holidays anywhere, packing a lightweight mac is a necessity. You can find these quite cheaply in many high street stores and are great for popping in your bag when you're out and about - if a sudden boat trip arises and you're without a towel, at least you can protect yourself from the sea spray with this helpful item. It will also double up as a picnic blanket if necessary as it is wipe clean. Handy eh?

In terms of footwear, comfortable shoes is a must, but don't forget the importance of function. Bring a pair of flip flops for the beach, casual sandals for days out, smarter shoes for going to dinners and of course trainers for walking around the city. There's nothing worse than getting blisters while on holiday, but be sure to pack some extra plasters just in case!

Take a number of costume jewellery options with you too; these are great for a quick outfit refresh and make each item of clothing work that bit harder. A stylish beach bag will also double up as an evening hand bag or sightseeing bag - just make sure it has a zip or clasp to keep your belongings safe.

A fully stocked first aid kit is an essential item. Plasters, headache tablets, a bandage, safety pins - think of all the things that could possibly happen (within reason) and pack a small first aid kit to take with you. There's nothing worse than a blister on your foot or a grazed knee to ruin a holiday! This is a great idea to cover all eventualities when on your holiday as is bug spray or lotion, which can double up as your perfume and body lotion too - check beauty stores for these, which are fast becoming popular on the market. And whether you're in Spain or off to Dubai, it's always best to be prepared.
