International Car Rental

I was looking at a car quote online with Avis, in Europe. I want to purchase the Collision Damage Waiver insurance. When I was looking at the terms and conditions, it said that there would be a non-waivable excess... What is that?

When you rent a car in North America, taking the damage waivers will allow you to waive full responsibility for damage to the rental car, provided you have complied with all the terms and conditions of your rental agreement.

Overseas, it is common, that even if you purchase the collision damage waiver from the rental car company there is a certain dollar figure for non-waiveable excess. In simple terms, this is a deductible. Similar to what you may have on your personal autombile collison coverage. If you purchase the waiver and there is a $500 non-waiveable excess... you would have to pay that amount upfront, and any remaining charges for damage done to the rental car would be covered by the Collision Damage Waiver.

Hope this helps!
