Many people choose to have their weddings in the historic city of Istanbul. With the stunning beaches, this area is a natural wonder and will make perfect photographic memories. The only stipulations that the country of Turkey places on weddings is the ceremony cannot take place at any place with cultural heritage or religious significance.

Weddings in Turkey typically last from three to four days. There are two main parts to the wedding: the henna night and then the receiving of the bride. The first part of the ceremony is held before the actual wedding called henna night. A flag is placed on the roof to announce that the henna night is in progress. Women try to make the bride laugh; and then by the end of the evening, it is the custom to have her crying. Many people find it eventful to experience the true customs of the country, complete with the henna night.

The actual receiving of the bride is the most special part of the wedding tradition. The wedding is usually held at night. Guests often throw sugar, dried fruits, and nuts over the head of the bride to signify prosperity. When the bride and groom come go back into the room, it is Turkish custom for the bed sheet to be inspected to make sure that the bride is virtuous. In old times, if the bride was not virtuous, she could be sent back home to the father. Of course, foreign couples may opt out of this archaic custom.

Observing traditions such as these is why so many people often choose to get married in a foreign land. Whether a couple chooses to have a traditional religious ceremony or a civil union, there are many variants available. The country of Turkey offers an exotic and unforgettable wedding experience.
