Car Rental in U.S. returning in Canada?

I am a Canadian student currently studying and residing in the States. I'll be graduating soon and moving back to Canada soon. I have some stuff to move and I was wondering if it is possible to rent a car in the New York or New Jersey area and return it in Ontario?

It may be difficult to find a rental company that will allow you to do this, unless they happen to have a car with Canadian plates available.

Canadian customs regulations prohibit a Canadian resident from entering Canada with a U.S. registered vehicle. Renters with a Canadian drivers license and a car with U.S. license plates will not be allowed to cross the border into Canada.

Canadian residents planning to cross the border must be provided with a car with Canadian plates. If you need to drive into Canada, the car rental company will require you to stop at their nearest location to the Canadian border and exchange your rental car for one that has the proper license plates.

Make sure when you are checking prices and availability for a rental car, to call direct. Maybe pick a local company that you want to rent from, call and ask to speak to the manager on duty to see if they can help you with a rental car for your particular situation.

Hope this helps and good luck!
