Proof of Insurance for Car Rental?

I have a valid drivers license, but do not currently own a car and therefore have no car insurance. When I renta a car is liability insurance included in the rate or do I have to have personal auto insurance in order to rent?

Most car rental companies carry basic public liability and property damage coverage for their cars, up to the minimum limits required by law. The supplemental liability insurance (if they offer it) would be to increase your coverage to more than the legal limits required by that particular state. Double check with your rental to make sure that basic liability is included in your rate.

You will also be offered the loss damage waiver option (which covers loss or damage to the rental car itself). If you waive this option, it is understood that you are fully responsible for any loss or damage to the rental car, as well as a loss of use fee, for every day that the damaged rental car cannot be rented.

Hope this helps!
