Car Rental and DMV Check

I have never rented a car before. Is there anything I need to bring with me, like proof of insurance? Also, when I called in to a car rental company to check prices, they told me that my license would be subject to a check at the counter. Could this affect the price of the car rental?

Bringing proof of insurance is always a good idea. You must also show your drivers license and your credit card.

The DMV check will not have any influence on the rental price, but most car rental companies terms and conditions state that your rental is usually

"subject to a drivers license check"; they have certain common criteria that they look at, and certain items can cause them to refuse you a rental car. These include:

invalid, suspended or revoked license

One or more convictions for reckless driving within a
certain time frame (as determined by the individual rental company.)

one DUI, DWI or DWAI conviction within a certain time frame (as determined by the individual rental company)

failure to report/leave scene of accident within a certain time frame (as determined by the individual rental company)

possession of stolen vehicle or use of a vehicle in a crime

expired license

three or more convictions for moving violations within a certain time frame (as determined by the individual rental company) Note: This restriction usually excludes seat belt violations, but check with the rental company.

two or more accidents within a certain time frame (as determined by the individual rental company)

Hope this answers your question and good luck with your rental!
