Getting a Free Car Rental Upgrade

How often to car rental companies upgrade you to a better car for free?

I rented a car a few months ago, and they upgraded me to a bigger car at no extra charge. I am taking a trip next month and I will be needing to rent a car. I'm wondering if I should just book something small and cheap and hopefully get the free upgrade. Is it likely that I'll get one?

The majority of car rental companies overbook on their smaller size car categories, because there are a lot of no shows. If they don't have the size vehicle you reserved, they are required to give another car at no extra charge.

Often, what may happen is that the car rental company will not have booked all their larger vehicles in advance or they may get some last minute cancellations. They know that they have plenty of reservations for the smaller size vehicles and will have no problem getting them rented and paid for at full price. They would rather see the larger vehicle rented (even at a lower price) than have it sitting on the lot, earning them no money.

The thing with a free upgrade is, it may be likely, but you can never count on it as a guarantee. Book the size car you need! Consider the upgrade a bonus. And ask for a free upgrade at the counter, if it's not offered. All they can say is no.

Good luck with your trip!
